SMAP member Kusanagi could return as face of gov't digital campaign



Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Kunio Hatoyama hinted Friday at the possibility that pop star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, who was arrested and released after being found naked at a park in April, could star again as the face of the government's digital terrestrial broadcasting campaign.

"The chance isn't zero," Hatoyama told a news conference following a regular Cabinet meeting Friday morning. "I think he reflected on himself after being involved in an incident like that. I'd like him to take this opportunity to mature further. We'll decide whether we'll let him star again in the campaign after evaluating how far he has improved himself."

The Association for Promotion of Digital Broadcasting and commercial broadcasters have expressed willingness to accept Kusanagi's comeback.

"We'd like to make a final decision after seeing the public's reactions to his behavior since his return to the entertainment world," said Michisada Hirose, head of the National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan.

Kusanagi, a member of all-male pop unit SMAP, was arrested on April 23 on suspicion of public indecency after he was discovered drunk and naked in a Tokyo park, but prosecutors did not indict him. Kusanagi returned to his entertainment activities on May 28.

The return of Tsuyoshi Kusanagi

In a recent Televiews column for the Daily Yomiuri, Wm. Penn writes about the return of Tsuyoshi Kusanagi.  Here is an excerpt from her column:

Surprises, surprises and more surprises this week. The only thing more surprising than Tsuyoshi Kusanagi’s arrest for his April 23 drunken, late-night, nude park debut is how quickly he has bounced back. His was one of the shortest TV timeouts for self-reflection ever.

One month and about 45,000 fan letters later, he’s already back on our TV screens in his regular gigs like SMAPxSMAP (Mondays, 10 p.m., Fuji). He’s also been rewarded with a starring role in the unlikely summer comedy Ninkyo Helper on Fuji TV in which he’ll play a yakuza who ends up working at a care facility for the elderly.

There certainly aren’t many shockers in the rest of the predictable summer lineup. Mito Komon returns for his 40th season and Johnny’s Jimusho lads will be featured in dramas almost every night of the week. On Mondays, Tomohisa Yamashita of NEWS stars in a romantic comedy about the company basketball team while Yuma Nakayama of Kansai Johnny’s Jr. and 1980s idol Masahiko “Matchi” Kondo team up for a mystery on Tuesdays. Okay, Pinko Izumi can have Wednesdays, but SMAPster Kusanagi takes Thursdays and Hideaki Takizawa stars in a Friday suspense drama.

TOKIO’s Tomoya Nagase will play a spy on Saturdays on NTV from summer just after Takuya Kimura’s Mr. Brain (Saturdays, 7:56 p.m., TBS), whose first episode topped the Video Research Ltd. drama ratings at 24.8 percent. The debut script was not bad, the supporting cast great, and yet Kimura has not quite made the character his own yet. He was more believable playing the prime minister in Change, but no doubt he’ll stay on top, which is more than can be said for fellow SMAPster Masahiro Nakai, whose Konkatsu floundered.

Japanese pop star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi is back doing what he does best after his fall from grace in April.



Tsuyoshi Kusanagi was shamefully arrested for stripping naked in a Tokyo park while under the influence of alcohol.

The visibly repentant artiste spoke of reading books and doing exercises at home to stay healthy “both in body and mind”.

Tsyyoshi had voluntarily stayed out of the public eye since his arrest. Prosecutors dropped charges after he apologised profusely in a nationally televised news conference.

Apart from cancelled appearances, TV commercials starring the artiste were taken off the air. Not unexpected; Japanese artistes, after all, are expected to be role models.

Meisa Kuroki teams up with Kusanagi in "Ninkyo Helper"



Some details are now out about Tsuyoshi Kusanagi's new comedy series, "Ninkyo Helper," which starts filming this week. One major cast addition is Meisa Kuroki, who will take on the heroine role.

"Ninkyo Helper" stars Kusanagi as the boss of a yakuza group. As part of training, his group's parent organization orders all of its subordinate bosses to work as nursing helpers at an elderly institution. This includes Kusanagi, as well as Kuroki, a female yakuza boss who starts out as Kusanagi's rival.

Ken Matsudaira has been cast as the leader of the parent gang, and Yui Natsukawa has been cast as the director of the nursing organization. Kota Yabu (of Hey! Say! JUMP), Shunji Igarashi, and Jutta Yuki will appear as yakuza underlings, while Yusuke Yamamoto and Riisa Naka play helpers at the institution.

The show will air on Fuji TV on Thursdays at 10:00pm, starting in early July.

Shingo GOES Musical Broadway



Shingo Katori will star a musical play titled "TALK LIKE SINGING", an original Japanese musical play written by Mitani Koki. This play is planned for TOKYO performances NEXT YEAR. But FIRST! Mitani Koki wants to bring this musical play to Off Broadway in NEW YORK first.

"TALK LIKE SINGING" musical play will take place at Skirball Center, New York University, on 12-22 November 2009 for total 13 shows. Skirball Center is considered mid-scale/mid-size among Broadway theaters and it has the capacity of 850 seats.

For a long time, Mitani Koki had always want to bring his original play to Broadway, together with Katori Shingo as the star, and his dream will finally come true! This would be a brilliant achievement as this is THE FIRST in Japanese theatrical play history.

"TALK LIKE SINGING" is a musical comedy where the lead, TAROU(Katori Shingo) is a young man who cannot talk properly since he was born and he always express his feelings by singing. There's this band inside his head, and music always plays in his head. Two psychological specialists find this as a new type of medical case in the world, and tried to cure TAROU. Co-stars are Horiuchi Keiko (the prime minister's private doctor in CHANGE), Kabira Jiei, and Shinya Niiro.

The play's dialogues will use 50% japanese and 50% english. But Mitani guarantees that it can still make people laugh although they don't understand one of the language.

Mitani said, he had always want to do this since a long time ago, since no one has ever done it before (to bring an original Japanese play to Broadway). This is a hard and difficult challenge, but as long as Katori Shingo with him, he believe they can overcome this challenge together. He really can't wait to make the New York citizens to laugh watching his play.

This would be Shingo's first stageplay in 12 years. Shingo himself never has SMAP concert tour abroad, but he'll be going to Broadway by himself, and it would be his foreign stage debut.

Shingo to star in off-Broadway musical

SMAP's Shingo Katori will be headed to New York later this year, as he has been given the starring role in the musical "Talk Like Singing," which will open off-Broadway in November. The musical, written and produced by the acclaimed director Koki Mitani, is said to be the first original Japanese production to have its opening performance in New York.




"Talk Like Singing" tells the story of a young man named Taro (Katori) with an unusual illness - there's a musical band inside his head. As a result, he has difficulty speaking normally, and instead expresses his thoughts and words through song. He winds up seeking help from a psycholinguistics doctor (Keiko Horiuchi) and a psychiatrist (Jay Kabira), who hatch up a plan to cure Taro by killing off the members of the band inside his head.

The music director is ex-Pizzicato Five member Yasuharu Konishi, who has produced hits such as Katori's "Shingo Mama no Oha Rock."

Although Katori has previously starred in musicals as part of SMAP, this will be his first team with a solo lead in one. The musical is said to be half in English and half in Japanese, but it will be presented without subtitles or translations.

13 performances are scheduled from November 12 to November 22 at NYU's Skirball Center, which has a capacity of 860 seats. The musical will be performed in Japan sometime next year, though no schedule has been finalized.
