Grant On England And Capello
Chelsea manager Avram Grant, previously the national coach of Israel, does not believe it matters that the new England manager is Italian.
Tonight England prepare for their first game under Fabio Capello, and Chelsea manager Avram Grant believes the heated debate over the FA's decision to appoint another foreigner as England coach is unimportant.
Grant, who previously managed the Israeli national side, told the official Chelsea website: "If I understand right I don't think you need to choose English, or Italian, or Dutch to be good. If there is an English coach okay, if it's another country it is okay. The decision is if he can improve the team and get results."
Grant also revealed that he has had a meeting with Fabio Capello since the Italian took up his new role with England on January 7th.
Chelsea have supplied four players for Capello's first England squad - Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridge, Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Two other English Blues - John Terry and Frank Lampard - would have been in the squad if they weren't injured.
Grant told the Chelsea website: "I spoke with Capello and it is fine. I spoke with Capello, it was nice to speak with him, it was not the first time and it is between me and him. I don't tell him which players to take."
The question of whether Lampard and Steven Gerrard can play together in the England midfield was a constant theme in the reigns of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren.
Grant, like Jose Mourinho before him, simply maintains that Lampard is a must for England when fit, and that he can form an effective partnership with Gerrard.
"I don't think it's a problem if you talk about Lampard and Gerrard," said the Isareli.
"It is always good when you have good players that like to work on the pitch. If you have lazy players it's a problem. But if you have good players it's not a problem. You can fix the tactics that it will be useful for everybody. It is always good," he said.
Grant himself is currently in Israel undertaking the courses which lead to the necessary coaching badges that will bring him into line with the Premier League's Uefa badge rules. |

Lampard Looking For House Near Barcelona
In news guaranteed to send the transfer rumour mill into overdrive, Chelsea midfield ace Frank Lampard has been in Barcelona over the last couple of days looking for property...
Sport.es reports that Frank Lampard has recently been in Barcelona over the last few days looking for a house, in news that could see the Chelsea star linked with a switch to Camp Nou.
The England international has been spotted on the streets and near Ciudad Condal, according to ONA FM, with a view to buying a luxury house in the area, where both Leo Messi and Ronaldinho also live.
Barcelona midfielder Deco has been said to be on the way out of the blaugrana side in the summer, leaving a berth free for a new midfielder - naturally, some have already began to put two and two together.
However, there could yet be simpler explanations. Lampard is already an investor in the real estate market, and, in common with many of his countrymen, could also merely be looking for a holiday home in Spain.
Furthermore, his girlfriend is Elena Ribes, a Catalan, so neither he nor his family are any strangers to the area.
But with Lampard being such a high-profile player, and Barcelona a club of great stature, one may wonder if something else is afoot...

Di Santo Confident Of Chelsea Chance
Chelsea's now Argentine import Franco Di Santo believes he will soon be given his chance to break into the Chelsea first team.
The Stamford Bridge club beat a whole host of clubs to the signature of the highly rated 18 year old last month from Chilean side Audax Italiano.
Even though the striker has the likes of Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Andrei Shevchenko, Salomon Kalou and Claudio Pizarro ahead of him in the pecking order, he remains upbeat over his chances of a first team berth this season.
"I think you always have to be positive. I have confidence. After some time, two months or a year, I will fight for the position with anybody" he told Chilean newspaper El Mercurio.
"If I compare myself to them, the difference is huge, but it is because they have been playing for 10 years. I know I cannot do the same as they do now, but I have some things they don't have - I am young!
" People here are so kind" Di Franco added.
"I used to watch them on TV and told myself they would be arrogant but it is totally different when you are inside.
"Despite all they have won, they treat you like one of them and you have to treat them the same. If not, they get angry.
"I never imagined I would be here watching Michael Ballack, Pizarro or Frank Lampard playing pool in front of me. Being with them and spending time with them is unbelievable.
"They help you in whatever you need. Whatever they can give to you, they do. I really don't want to wake up from this dream."
Di Santo also admitted that Ricardo Carvalho had dubbed him 'little Crespo' after former Chelsea and Argentina striker Hernan Crespo.
"One day, Carvalho called me 'Crespito' because of Hernan, who also played here, but he is the only one who calls me that. The others call me Frank."
