ANNOUNCEMENT
Services Restoration Update
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) would like to update its customers on the on-going restoration works undertaken by the consortium for its Internet services, which were affected by the earthquake off Taiwan on December 26th, 2006. To date, we have already recovered more than 80 per cent bandwidth capacity for the Internet traffic.
The consortium, which TM is a member of, is still fervently working towards the full restoration of the submarine cables affected by the incident. The consortium has duly informed us that the current bad weather conditions in the affected area are delaying the restoration works in progress. The extensive works undertaken by the consortium include laying new cables as many are experiencing high tension on them; and additional repair works are needed to be performed on several cables damaged by fishing hooks.
In view of these unforeseen circumstances, the consortium has confirmed that the full restoration will be completed by January 29th, 2007. Your patience is much appreciated during this restoration process.
Customers can call our Customer Interaction Center at 1-300-88-9515 (24 hours) or 1-300-88-1515 from 8.00 a.m. till midnight, or e-mail [email protected] for any enquiries. |

LET’S ADOPT FAIR USAGE
Broadband Internet: a shared service
Let’s think of Streamyx connection similar to that of a shared water pipe. Everyone can use the pipe for unlimited use of this resource
However, if a small number of users were to keep their taps constantly on and consume excessive amounts of water, this will eventually affect the water pressure and supply for the majority of the users. The same is also true of your Internet bandwidth.
The past few years have seen a rise in the popularity of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) download programs like BitTorrent and eDonkey. P2P traffic typically consists of very large data files, usually of movies, TV shows, games and music. This uses up much more bandwidth for longer periods than what is considered ‘normal’ Internet traffic, which involves activities like web browsing, emails, online chat and streaming.
Today, P2P traffic now consumes a disproportionate amount of the total bandwidth on the TM Net network. Our statistics show that about 12% of users consume almost 80% of the available bandwidth, some downloading up to 100GB of data every month. This means that a minority of users are consuming most of the total capacity of the Internet bandwidth network. The actual number of the 12% is quite staggering considering there are currently more than 750,000 TM Net subscribers.
Since Streamyx is a shared service provided on a ‘best effort’ basis, the heavier the demand for bandwidth, the more congested the network will be. This effectively means that the majority of regular users are subsidising their bandwidth speed due to the download habits of the minority of heavy users. The network’s bandwidth capacity is sufficient to cater to all TM Net’s users’ requirements if there is no abuse in their usage.
Internet – Using it the right way
TM Net’s objective is to ensure a true broadband experience for all its subscribers. As the leading Internet service provider in the country TM Net has a duty to be fair to all our subscribers, including both light and heavy users.
Currently, TM Net is not opposed to heavy Internet usage and does not penalize or impose extra charges on users who download large amounts of data. We continue to positively encourage the public to maximise use of the Internet for their information, communication and entertainment needs!
However, this must be balanced against the need to maintain an equal quality of service for all its subscribers.
Fair Usage for the benefit of all
TM Net believes the best solution is in the spirit of ‘fair usage’ as Streamyx is a shared service and their usage habits do have an impact on the quality of service for all subscribers.
Nevertheless, TM Net is embarking on a major upgrading exercise to increase the amount of available bandwidth. The upgrading exercise will provide more than enough capacity on the network for all, if all users adopt responsible and fair usage practices
TM Net hopes its subscribers understand and support its efforts to ensure an equal quality of service for the broadband community in the country.
