Interview:
Shin Ha Kyun Says the Film'Running Man' Gave Him a Hard Time

CJ E&M enewsWorld An So Hyoun Translation Credit : Erika Kim

He′s already been in the scene for 16 years but still he′s taking on new challenges. Shin Ha Kyun tried out acting in the action genre for the first time with his film Running Man.

Though he was ready for it, the action scenes he met at 40 years old were more than he had hoped for.

"It was so hard," he said about acting for the film.

"This was my first attempt at action. I′m happy with the results because it shows how much I suffered. During filming, every day was so tiring and I even stopped drinking alcohol because of the pressure I felt about the shoots to take place the next day. I even worked out for about two months before shooting started. This was the first time I was more worried about my physique than my acting, since I wasn′t supposed to look awkward."

Though he made it through the hot and cold weather and the straining scenes, there was one thing he couldn′t stand.

"It was most difficult when I had to act on wires because I′m afraid of heights. I practically had a mental breakdown whenever I got that scared when my body was so tired. There′s a scene in the movie in which I fall down at a cafe, and that was from an actual accident."

Even the title is Running Man; he was bound to have felt as soon as he saw the title that he was in for hard times. Why then, when he was soaring so high with his success from Brain, did he choose such a piece?

"I was curious about the genre I had never been in before. The characteristics of the film seemed like they could make their own story and their own genre. There are genres that you can only take up until a certain point in your life, and I got an offer for an action piece when I was still strong. The scenario was also pretty fun. I thought it would be a nice film for entertainment."

Shin Ha Kyun not only runs with all his might, but he also appears as a father for the first time ever. His son is even supposed to be 17 years old.

"It was okay because we weren′t a normal father and son. I worked hard to express it the way it appeared in the scenario. I think it helped me look back on my relationship with my own father. I′ll probably look different if I appear as a father again once I have my own family and my own children."

With the premiere of the film, he also returned to the small screen with the SBS drama Everything About My Relationship. In the drama, he appears as an assemblyman, and even gets to enjoy a romance with the beautiful actress Lee Min Jung.

"I′ve never been in a film that concentrates on romance, but I wanted to be in one and I believed I should be in one someday. It turns out I got to fulfill this wish in drama. It feels so different to shoot a romance drama after running around so much. I′m enjoying a rise in status too; the drama is set in the National Assembly. The shoots are fun, and I′ve known my co-star Ms. [Lee] Min Jung since she was a play actor working with director Jang Jin when she was in college. It′s been a long time since I′ve seen her, but she′s still beautiful and she knows how to move in romance."

Though he′s busy shooting his drama and promoting his film, Shin Ha Kyun said every day is full of joy for him. Running Man has been garnering praise from netizens, and the actor said he gained more confidence after attending a few stage events.

"I think a lot of people will like the film. I believe it′s a good film that you can enjoy and it will let you leave the theater in high spirits. I hope a lot of people watch it, too. I′ve never met my audience up close, but this time I was so surprised. If everything turns out well I want to share a few drinks with my fans. (Laugh)"

Shin Ha-kyun leaps into first action role
‘I felt compelled to work on an action movie before I got any older'

By Lim Ju-ri Korea JoongAng Daily

Actor Shin Ha-kyun said, “I enjoyed [filming] running scenes,
but a lot of the wire works were really challenging.” By Park Jong-keun

Just like the movie title “Running Man,” the protagonist runs and runs, sometimes rolls and even dives from buildings for almost the whole? movie. But don’t assume the actor would be a muscular, tough guy. The actor is Shin Ha-kyun, who is well known for his delicate, emotional portrayals.

The 39-year-old has leapt into an action movie for the first time in his 15-year filmography. The veteran actor, who debuted in 1998, rose to stardom through the smash hit movie “Joint Security Area” in 2000, which is based on the 1950-53 Korean War. Since then, he ?broadened his ?range by playing a variety of roles, including a ruthless killer in the hit movie “Guns & Talks” in 2001 and a sharp-tempered neurosurgeon in the drama “Brain” in 2011.

Recently, he ?showed his striking screen presence in the exhilarating chase thriller “Running Man,” which hit theaters on April 4. The movie revolves around an innocent man who is falsely charged of murder. Well ahead of its release, the film heightened movie lovers’ anticipation by being the first domestic movie to be fully funded by a major Hollywood studio, Fox International Productions. As of April 14, its box office has attracted 1 million viewers.

The JoongAng Ilbo sat down with Shin recently to discuss his newest movie.

Q. Since it is your first action movie, I didn’t expect you to do so great.

A. I took the role since I felt compelled to work on an action movie before I got any older. I did most of my own stunts. To do that, I went through intensive physical training two hours a day for ?50 days in preparation for the film. I didn’t even drink during the production since I had to run and run every day.

That must have been hard for you.

It was really scary to jump from a four- or five-story building to another. I even have aeroacrophobia. But I could pull it off, I think, because I was fully into the role at the moment.

I found some scenes a little bit absurd. It felt like the action effects were emphasized to cover them up.

More than anything else, the top priority was giving an adrenaline rush to viewers. The movie crew and I faced numerous setbacks. As most scenes were shot in crowded public places, we always had to ask people for their agreement. In addition, when we worked in Jongno District, central Seoul, we had to stop filming several times because of rain. On Dongjak Bridge, we had to bear a lot of foul words by passing drivers. [laughs]

Besides action scenes, the movie tells the story of a strained father-son relationship and their reconnection, which played a part in drawing Fox International Productions to the film.

What was it like to play the role of a father as a bachelor?

I felt some pressure. You know, I’m not even married. Besides, the son of my character was a high school boy. I didn’t know how to relate myself to the character. Then I reflected on my relationship with my father. It really helped me through the production.

How was your relationship with your father?

I was born and raised in an ordinary family. I think most Korean fathers sacrifice themselves to support their family, but most of them are not good at expressing affection for their sons. There always seems to be an impassable barrier between Korean fathers and sons. I wanted to portray that Korean sentiment.

I think your acting is especially great in nonmainstream movies like “Save The Green Planet!” and “Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance.”

I did not intend on starring in only those kind of movies. It is more like I’m always seeking new things. I work toward perfection when working. But when I don’t work, I let go of my control. I don’t even make plans ahead of time. But I can say for sure that I will always be careful choosing my projects that can give inspiration to me and viewers, too.

Moon Geun-young to star in drama

By Lee Sun-min Korea JoongAng Daily

Moon Geun-young, of the hit drama series “Cheongdamdong Alice” and “Cinderella’s Sister,” will return to the small screen in July in a periodic drama. It’s the first time in five years that Moon will act in a period drama.

In the drama tentatively named, “Goddess of Fire, Jeongi,” Moon will play the first female potter of the ancient Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), who becomes the nation’s best pottery artisan.

“Moon has been practicing pottery-making recently and focusing on analyzing the character she’s going to play,” her agency said. “It is the first time for a period drama to focus on the life of a potter; she is putting forth the best effort to make the character come out perfect.”

It’s not the first time Moon has played the role of a professional craftsman. Five years ago, Moon portrayed Shin Yun-bok, a renowned Joseon painter, on the premise that the artist could have been a woman, based on the historical novel by Lee Jung-myung, in a drama titled “Painter of the Wind.”

The new drama will air after the ongoing MBC drama, “Gu Family Book.”
