Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson faces five match ban over 'unfit' Alan Wiley outburst

Sir Alex Ferguson's joy at returning to the top of the Premier League will be deflated on Monday by an FA charge that could lead to Manchester United's manager being banned from the touchline for five matches.

Ferguson was smiling last night as United, pursuing a fourth successive championship, beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at home to replace beaten Chelsea at the top of the table.
Manchester United's Michael Owen

But the storm clouds are gathering, with key figures inside football determined that Sir Alex should not get away with his outburst against referee Alan Wiley, whom he branded as 'unfit' following United's 2-2 draw with Sunderland two weeks ago.

Such is the strength of feeling inside the Football Association that Ferguson faces a five-match ban, the heaviest punishment he has suffered in his 23 years at Old Trafford.

In another blow yesterday, United now face the possibility of being banned from buying players after French club Le Havre announced they are to pursue their case with FIFA over United's alleged poaching of French teenager Paul Pogba.

If Le Havre succeed, United could be prevented from buying players, just as Chelsea suffered a ban from the next two transfer windows for allegedly poaching Gael Kakuta from RC Lens.

United took advantage of Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa earlier yesterday by racing into a 2-0 lead against Bolton within 25 minutes, with a Zat Knight own goal and Antonio Valencia's first for the club since signing from Wigan. They took the points despite a 75th minute consolation header from Matt Taylor.

Attention will now switch to the Wiley affair. Sir Alex, who has written to the FA to explain his comments, will hear from the Governance Division tomorrow if he is to face an improper conduct charge.

The worst punishments previously meted out to Ferguson were the twomatch touchline bans he received in 2003 for verbally attacking official Jeff Winter and in 2007 for using abusive words towards Mark Clattenburg in a match with Bolton.

Ironically, Clattenburg was in charge of United's game against the same team yesterday. In his programme notes, Ferguson claimed his outburst had been caused partially by anger at his team's display against Sunderland. But that may not impress the game's rulers.
Sir Alex Ferguson

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Pogba made his United debut yesterday, being booked as the club's academy side beat Manchester City 3-0.

FIFA issued a provisional international certificate 11 days ago that allowed United to register Pogba. But Le Havre have successfully defended a bid by the teenager's lawyers to overturn the French League's backing for the club, and now say they will pursue their case against United with FIFA.

FIFA could consider the case next month, giving them time to impose sanctions against United before the January transfer window if they find Ferguson's club guilty

21 October 2009.

Sir Alex Ferguson lavished more praise on Ryan Giggs before revealing that the ageless midfielder is an injury doubt ahead of Manchester United's Champions League clash at CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.

Giggs, 36 next month, suffered a knock in another show-stealing performance in United's 2-1 win against Bolton, and Ferguson said: 'He's doubtful for Moscow.'

And that is not the only concern for Sir Alex, who revealed that Patrice Evra sustained an injury and could also miss the Russian trip along with Wayne Rooney.

London, October 18 (ANI): Coleen Rooney has reportedly given birth to her first child with soccer star hubby Wayne.

The English footballer’s wife was taken to Liverpool’s Women’s Hospital, where she apparently gave birth soon after 1pm, reports the News of the World.

However, no official confirmation of the birth has yet come but the couple’s pals are already celebrating.

It was earlier reported that Coleen had rejected a 1-million-pound deal with a magazine for pictures of her and Wayne’s baby, as she intends to keep the baby away from limelight.

The couple had revealed that Coleen was expecting her first child in April. (ANI)

Owen expects hostile Anfield reception
Michael Owen has accepted that he will get a hostile reception when he returns to Liverpool as a Manchester United player this weekend but insisted that he does not believe he let down his first club by joining their fiercest rivals. Owen is acutely aware that many supporters at Anfield cannot forgive him for switching allegiances to United, but the striker considers it unfair for him to be accused of disloyalty. To illustrate the point, he said he planned to celebrate as normal if he scored in Sunday's game. "I'm human," said Owen. "I'd prefer people to sit down and recognise what you did for them and for the team in years gone past but I'm pretty realistic as well. Now that I'm playing for their local rivals – I'm not holding my breath, put it that way. People talk about loyalty in football, and for a football supporter it's easy to preach about that. As a father and a brother and a son there's no one more loyal than me. But when you're a player, you're not a fan. I've got to earn a living, provide for my family."
Daniel Taylor, The Guardian

Meanwhile, the Guardian speculates that Sir Alex may leave Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher behind when the team fly to Russia for Wednesday's Champions League tie against CSKA Moscow to ensure they are fit for the Liverpool game.

In other news, the Daily Mail reports that Sir Alex may be given a five-match touchline ban following his comments about referee Alan Wiley's performance against Sunderland.

Official annoucement expected later today after pals say Wayne is a new dad

By Matt Acton, 18/10/2009
COLEEN Rooney has gone to hospital - where she is said to have made husband Wayne a proud dad by giving birth, the News of the World can reveal.

A heavily-pregnant Coleen was taken to Liverpool's Women's Hospital earlier today - and pals are claiming The Rooney's became proud parents soon after 1pm.

There has been no official confirmation of the birth, but an annoucement his expected later today. Friends of the couple are already celebrating.

Last week the News of the World told how Coleen had snubbed a £1 MILLION deal with a glossy mag for pictures of her and Wayne's baby.

The WAG made the decision because she wants their child to be kept OUT of the spotlight completely.

She was determined to have her first baby naturally and chose Liverpool Women's Hospital - an NHS Trust six miles from where they grew up in Croxteth - for the birth.

The baby was due on October 24, Rooney's 24th birthday, the couple had revealed Coleen was expecting their first child in April.

NANI FIGHTING TO SAVE UNITED CAREER
NANI is fighting to save his Manchester United career after being left on the bench on Saturday

The Portugal winger continues to frustrate Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson after an inconsistent start to the season.

Fergie expected him to step out of Cristiano Ronaldo's shadow when he sold the World Player of the Year to Real Madrid in the summer.

Instead Nani has failed to mature and Fergie is already considering his options for the United flop.

Nani had been earmarked for a potential loan move to Wigan last summer but that was blocked by the United chief as he decided to give the player another chance to shine.

Nani, however, has yet to take it.

United continue to monitor the form of Valencia playmaker David Silva and will test the water again in the January transfer window.

Silva has made it clear that he wants to move to United but the two clubs are a long way apart in their valuations.

Michael Owen slates fans for double standards ahead of Anfield return with Manchester United

Michael Owen has vowed to celebrate if he scores against former club Liverpool and accused modern football fans of double standards.

Owen returns to Liverpool on Sunday for the first time since joining their arch rivals Manchester United on a free transfer from Newcastle last summer.

The 29-year-old will face a hostile reception from the Anfield crowd but claimed he only has an affinity with former clubs Real Madrid and Newcastle - not Liverpool.

"I'm human," said Owen. "I'd prefer people to sit down and recognise what you did for them and for the team in years gone past but I'm pretty realistic as well.

"Now that I'm playing for their local rivals - I'm not holding my breath, put it that way.

"People talk about loyalty in football, and for a football supporter it's easy to preach about that.

"As a father and a brother and a son there's no-one more loyal than me.

"But when you're a player, you're not a fan. I've got to earn a living, provide for my family.

"I supported Everton as a kid. I never supported Real Madrid, but I played for them. It's a job opportunity, just like anyone else's work.

"The longer you're at a team, if the fans make you feel welcome and the players take to you, then you build an affinity.

"So now obviously I look for Real Madrid results and Newcastle results, but it doesn't make me any less loyal to Manchester United."

Owen admitted he is desperate to go to the World Cup next summer and pointed to his past international record as justification for his inclusion in Fabio Capello's final 23-man squad.

"I'm hopeful but the last thing I want is to be campaigning," said Owen.

"Everyone can see how many games I've played, how many goals I've scored, how many World Cups I've been in, my record against strong opponents in big games.

"Everyone can see everything with their own eyes. There are no secrets with me. I've played 89 games, I've scored 40 goals.

"Everyone knows if I play I'm likely to score every other game. Playing in a World Cup wouldn't bother me. In fact, I'd raise my game, as has happened before in big games.

"I like big games. For some reason I find an extra certain percentage. Everyone knows these things."

United fly to Russia today for Wednesday's Champions League tie against CSKA Moscow with several players set to miss the trip.

Injured players Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher are all likely to be left behind to ensure they are fully fit for the trip to Liverpool.

Giggs set to miss Moscow

Ryan Giggs is likely to sit out United's Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow.

The veteran midfielder shone again in the Reds' narrow win over Bolton Wanderers, but is unlikely to travel to Russia after picking up a minor injury towards the end of the 2-1 triumph.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Giggs' likely absence to MUTV, and also ran through a list of probables, possibles and absentees for the return to the Luzhniki Stadium, as well as Sunday's subsequent trip to Liverpool.

"Ryan Giggs has got a knock and is a doubt for Wednesday," said the manager. "Patrice Evra we'll have to look at tomorrow, he may be a doubt.

"Berbatov, I think, will be alright. Wayne Rooney, we've got to try to get ready for Wednesday. We'll see him on Sunday. I'm hopeful Vidic will be alright, but he'll certainly be ready for the Liverpool game."
