Owen and Liverpool back in business

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) - Michael Owen found the net for the first time since more than three months and helped Steven Gerrard score the goal which beat Manchester City and put Liverpool in Champions League contention.
The 2-1 victory over City left Liverpool fourth on 38 points, the same number as Newcastle who were held to a 1-1 draw at Blackburn while Charlton slumped to a 4-2 defeat at home to Tottenham.
Owen gave Liverpool an early lead when he picked up Dietmar Hamann's pass, slipped away from Richard Dunne and beat his former Liverpool teammate David James.
Shaun Wright-Phillips equalised with a powerful shot early in the second half, but within two minutes Gerrard profited from Owen's persistent play in the box.
Steve McManaman, playing for the first time at Anfield since he left to join Real Madrid, had a hand in Wright-Phillips' goal but was otherwise a fringe figure.
Owen, who had missed some relatively easy chances in the weekend draw with Bolton, was son back in the goalscoring groove.
In the third minute referee Mike Riley played an intelligent advantage to let the game continue after Daniel van Buyten fouled Bruno Cheyrou.
Hamann slotted a pass through to Owen, who rounded Dunne and chipped over the advancing James.
City were level four minutes after half-time.
Michael Tarnat played McManaman into space in midfield and, with Robbie Fowler going on a decoy run to his left, the former Liverpool winger threaded the ball into Wright-Phillips' path and he rifled a low shot past Jerzy Dudek.
Within two minutes Liverpool regained the lead.
The ball was lifted into City's box and Owen somehow met it, with James parrying the effort only for Gerrard to lash the loose ball home from close range.
With only the top four qualifying for the Champions League, Liverpool were finally where they wanted to be.
