Seven Australians among 227 passengers feared dead after Malaysia Airlines plane goes missing

Seven Australians are among the 239 passengers and crew on board a Malaysia Airlines flight that has gone missing in Asia.
Authorities have detected the missing plane's signal in the middle of the ocean between Vietnam and Malaysia.
Vietnamese news site VN Express quoted Pham The Hien, director of Vietnam's search wand rescue co-ordination centre, confirming that the signal was detected 230 kilometres south-west of Cape Ca Mau, Vietnam.
DFAT spokeswoman Kerin Ayyalaraju said Australian consular officials were in "urgent and ongoing contact" with Malaysia Airlines.
"Malaysia Airlines has advised that it is contacting relatives of the passengers on the flight," she said.
The passengers included 152 Chinese people, 38 Malaysians, 12 Indonesians, seven Australians, three Americans and two Canadians.
