MANCHESTER UNITED
Van der Sar - 7 - No drama, no spectacle and no mistakes. His years of experience stood as a stark contrast to the erratic talent of his understudy, Foster. Great save from Knight at the start of the second half.
Neville - 7 - Linked well with Valencia throughout and was typically obstinate in defense. A great performance was capped off by his assist for the Ecuadorian's goal.
Ferdinand - 6 - After a tumultuous week, would have appreciated a mundane afternoon's work. Didn't get this as Wanderers pressed for an unlikely equalizer
Jonathan Evans - 6 - Missed a glorious chance to double United's advantage early on. Stood tall during the onslaught from Bolton.
Evra - 6 - His lack of height was targeted as a weak point in the United defense, and he was easily beaten by Taylor for his goal. As always, he was bright going forward, and his cross led to the all important early opener.
Valencia - 8 - His best competitive appearance for the club was capped off by his rasping near post goal. Was always available for the ball and was happy to run at the visitor's full-back. Must build on this.
Carrick - 6 - Quiet and composed. Formed a solid pairing with Anderson in the middle of the park and kept his side ticking over.
Anderson - 7 - The more exuberant half of United's central midfield partnership. Bolton couldn't cope with his energy, and he was capable of picking out a great pass.
Giggs - 7 - Always probing and prodding Bolton's defense. Regularly used his guile to get into space and on another day could have registered a few more assists.
Owen - 6 - Not a standout game. In truth, his team mates didn't play to his strengths as they preferred putting in direct passes to Berbatov.
Berbatov - 8 - Seems to be finally settling into the Old Trafford setting. The ball stuck to him like glue, was always looking to take a shot and he set up a number of chances with his supreme technical ability. Was caught offside a few too many times, though.
Substitutes
Scholes - n/a
Welbeck - n/a
O'Shea - 6 - His height was crucial in guiding the hosts past the finish line with all three points in the bag.
BOLTON WANDERERS
Jaaskelainen - 7 - Made a few smart saves to keep out United, and was blameless for the goals. A quality custodian.
Ricketts - 5 - Let his former international team mate Giggs past on too many occasions. The gulf in class between the two was evident.
Knight - 5 - Made up for his howler for the own goal with a brilliant tackle on Owen after Berbatov's flick in the 53rd minute. Could have got on the score sheet for his own team with a header from a Taylor free kick.
Cahill - 6 - Underlined his potential as a top drawer player as he stuck to Owen like glue. His head was the first to meet any ball that came in to the box.
Samuel - 4 - Good performance on the ball as his charges up the wing and in field led to opportunities. Critically, he wasn't up to the challenge posed by Valencia when asked to defend. Needs to work on balancing his responsibilities as a full-back.
Lee - 5 - His in-experience shone through as he struggled to carry out his defensive duties. Exhibited promise when on the ball, but needs to learn a few more lessons before being selected against table topping opposition in the future. Substituted early in the second half.
Cohen - 5 - Did a good impression of the invisible man. Bolton's revelation of the season was a long way from his best today. Hooked just past the hour mark.
Muamba - 6 - The best part of a poor midfield. Used his height and strength to rush the opposition at times. His reputation as a solid holding midfielder remains intact.
Gardner - 4 - Yet another Bolton player who failed to turn up at the Theatre of Dreams. The Jamaican can be a tidy footballer at times, but he didn't seem interested.
Taylor - 7 - Out jumped Evra for his well taken headed goal. Wasted a good chance in the 31st minute and performed well, otherwise.
Kevin Davies - 5 - Let his frustration at a lack of supply boil over with a bad foul on Evra for a booking. Could have done better with a first half header when played in by Ricketts.
Substitutes
Mark Davies - 7 - Made a positive contribution to the game. His driving run led to Taylor's goal.
Klasnic - 6 - Added an extra physical presence to Bolton's attack, and helped to make it a nervy end to the game for the hosts.
Basham - 7 - Another solid performer after being brought on by Gary Megson. Was good in possession and always looked to support the strikers.
