Feel the vibes - Seoul Superstars
Two of Seoul's most famous citizens are the subject of a major documentary on South Korea

Rain and Lee Byung Hun ride the Korean pop culture wave with aplomb.

AH ... South Korea. The land of kimchi (fermented vegetable appetiser), shabu-shabu (steamboat), Jinro (Korean distiller), the 2002 FIFA World Cup (well, half of it, anyway), and taekwondo. These days, though, the republic is not only increasingly known for its electronic gadgets but also, an exploding pop culture scene with a popularity that is spreading like wildfire across the world.

This is thanks in part to a robust entertainment industry with a knack for coming up with critically-acclaimed movies and tear-jerking TV dramas that feature a seemingly endless stream of luscious actresses (all of whom seem to be able to burst into tears at will), and heartthrob male artistes with the ability to make thousands of girls swoon and go weak at the knees.

Malaysians got to catch Rain抯 spectacular showmanship
during his Rain抯 Coming concert at Stadium Putra,
Bukit Jalil, in 2007.

Of the latter, more testosterone-fuelled group, two names stand out

Choi ji-woo admits relationship with actor

Top actress Choi Ji-woo has confirmed being in a relationship with an actor she appeared with in a drama.

Choi, 34, and Lee Jin-wook, six years her junior, first met on the set of TV drama "Air City" two years ago. But Choi told a local daily that it was only lately that they had started dating.

The actress said the two were very careful about their relationship because they were both celebrities. Choi added that the public's attention on their relationship as well as the speculation of their marriage was a little burdensome because they just started seeing each other.

Choi is currently taking a break after completing "Celebrity Sweetheart," an SBS drama. She is scheduled to have a fan meeting in Japan next month. Lee, meanwhile, is currently appearing on SBS drama "Castle of Glass."

Ryu Si-won to lure in foreign visitors

Ryu Si-won, an actor well-known for his romantic roles and good looks, this week began working with the Korea Tourism Organization to foreign travelers to Korea.

Ryu, 37, a popular actor, singer and MC since the late 1990s, has recently been gaining recognition in Japan and other Asian countries after starring in the hit SBS drama "Beautiful Days" in 2001. Ryu has also released a number of records in Japan since 2004.

The KTO said that Ryu will be working with the organization with an aim of bringing in 12,000 additional foreign visitors this year by co-hosting a number of special events and tours.

Ryu has been an honorary ambassador for Korea's tourism for three consecutive years. "Ryu has great influence in Japan, and one of Korea's top hallyu stars by not only simply showing Korea to the fans but also bringing them to come visit here," the KTO said.

Last month, Ryu's Single Collection Album hit No. 2 on its release date of April 22 on Japan's Oricon Top 10 Daily Album Charts. Each year, more than 3,000 of Ryu's Japanese fans attend his birthday party on Oct. 6, the KTO said.

The organization and Ryu's agency R's Company will be working on six different projects to eventually see approximately 20 billion won ($16 million) in profits. They include tours around his hometown in Andong, Gyeongsang Province, a food tour related to the show "Mat vs. Mat" that he used to MC for, as well as coming to see a super model competition he will be hosting this summer.

Ryu is also well-known for being a professional car racer, bringing his international fans here to the watch the games held in Taebaek of Gangwon Province. "The KTO has always been working together with various hallyu-related projects with hallyu stars, but this is the first year-based contract and we have great hopes (to see a good outcome)," said KTO president Oh Jee-chul.

Ryu Si-won said, "I thank all the fans who come as far as Korea to see me. More and more fans who first came here just to meet their stars are discovering the hidden gems of Korea and hence show greater interest in other travel destinations."

Actress Choi Ji-woo Signs Agreement with UP School

Actress Choi Ji-woo has signed an agreement pledging 100 million won to the UP School Program of the Busan government’s project aimed at improving the city’s educational environment. The signing ceremony was attended by students from Deokmun High School for Girls--Choi’s alma mater--along with her former teachers and education officials.

The UP School Program was launched by the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education and the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to improve the educational environment in the city’s schools. As of May this year, over 1,500 companies, organizations and individuals had donated 13 billion won toward the cause. The donations have been distributed to schools to improve students’ learning environment and help low-income families.

Jangan Elementary School, which was on the verge of closing due to a small number of students, has seen more students since it received the donation. Other schools have also greatly benefited from the campaign. They have expanded their free lunch and school bus services for students. Choi says she hopes the campaign will help students better concentrate on their studies and enjoy their school years. She also called for public interest and help.

The mayor of the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, Seol dong-geun, said Choi Ji-woo has been sparing no efforts to improve education in Busan despite her busy schedule, and that her pledge of a donation was a "beautiful act of repaying the public for their love." He presented the actress with an appreciation plaque.

After the ceremony, Choi visited a special purpose school in Daeyeon-dong, Busan to encourage its students and their parents as well as present them with gifts. The Busan-born actress has acted as PR ambassador for the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education since 2005. She has carried out diverse activities to improve education in Busan and has regularly provided her alma mater with scholarships.

LBH talks about Lee Minchul
At the beginning of the drama, he's so cold, arrogant.. he doesn't believe love. The drama goes on, he changes himself. He knows what real love is. Even he cries in some situation.
He opens his mind little by little. Those kind of things made people love the character.

Korea Aims to Attract Muslim Tourists

By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has offered about 40 travel agents and guides a lecture on Islamic culture and introduced a Halal food lunchbox and tour programs tailor-made for Muslims in a bid to attract more Muslim tourists here.

Hanyang University professor Lee Hee-soo gave an orientation on how Muslims in the Middle East and Southeast Asia have developed their traditions on food and other living styles, such as eating meat only from certain animals slaughtered in a special way.

Annie Yu, director of an inbound travel agency Plaza 21 Plus, has been arranging programs for travelers from Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. But the director acknowledged, "I learned that I've been so ignorant of Islamic culture even though I have developed tour programs for Muslim travelers."

The biggest obstacle to attracting Muslim tourists is strict rules on food and prayer, the agents said. It is not easy to prepare "Halal food" in this non-Islamic country and ensure tourists can pray in the direction of Mecca five times a day.

"Halal restaurants are very rare here, and there are almost none outside Seoul, Busan and Jeju. So we take Muslim travelers to seafood restaurants, Indian or Pakistani eateries, or vegetarian restaurants," said Bob Lee, sales manager and guide at Jacky Travel Service.

Bill Yi, a freelance guide, said, "Some tourists do not eat food even at vegetarian restaurants, thinking the chefs may use the same knife in cutting both vegetables and meat slaughtered in a non-Halal way. Some bring their own food with them, such as noodles, and eat only them."

To cope with the food trouble, the KTO held a sampling party of a Halal food lunchbox.

"It is 'Korea-style Halal' lunchbox. As ordinary Korean restaurants do not offer Halal meat, it was not easy for Muslim visitors to try Korean foods like 'bulgogi,' which they learned about through Korean movies and dramas. So, the lunchbox was designed to provide Muslim travelers with Halal food and to publicize Korean food at the same time,'' Joo Sung-hee, a KTO manager, said.

Grilled Marinated Beef 불고기 l http://www.trifood.com/bulgogi.html

For prayer, the agents usually ask Halal restaurants to prepare a space for Muslim tourists, Lee said. Joo said only a few tourist destinations, including Everland and Nami Island, have prayer rooms.

The KTO recently opened a prayer room at the Tourism Information Center on the first basement floor of its headquarters, so that Muslim tourists can visit. The carpeted room has a compass showing the direction of Mecca.

The tourism body also introduced a program at Bukchon Hanok Village near Insa-dong, in which visitors can try a traditional Korean way of dyeing with indigo plant. "After dyeing cloth, Muslim women travelers can use it as hijab," Joo said.

She said that people from the Middle East are usually family tourists, enjoying shopping and visiting hallyu destinations and theme parks. Their interest in medical tourism here is also growing. Many from Southeast Asia are incentive traveler groups, and they prefer seasonal attractions, such as skiing in winter and flower festivals in spring, she said.

"We believe the Muslim market with a 1.3 billion population has good potential. We hope the lecture and the programs we offered today will help attract more Muslim travelers," Joo said.
