Domenech: Bleus over Blues

France coach Raymond Domenech insists he had every right to recall midfielder Claude Makelele because international fixtures take precedence over domestic affairs.

The Bleus boss first reignited the club versus country debate last week by picking his retired World Cup star for the opening games of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Domenech then threatened the experienced 33-year-old with suspension if he failed to show, a move which led Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to compare the player's treatment to that of "a slave".

While Makelele has moved to calm the spat and has joined up with his national squad in Clairefontaine, Domenech has moved to reaffirm his position on the matter.

"Accusing us of anything is like questioning the way national teams work - although they have the priority and also have the right, when international matches take place, to choose and pick players," he told the French federation's website.

"Their country needs them and we don't take them with a knife under their throat.

"The rules set up by Fifa are strict and give us a lot of possibilities, otherwise we can see how difficult it would be to build up teams."

Former Real Madrid man Makelele is now expected to feature in the tough away trip to Georgia on September 2 and the rematch of this summer's World Cup final against champions Italy four days later.

TBILISI, Sept 2 (Reuters) - World Cup runners-up France began the post-Zinedine Zidane era in impressive fashion by crushing Georgia 3-0 in their opening Euro 2008 qualifier on Saturday.

Playing their first official match without their inspirational playmaker who retired after the World Cup final in July, the French struck twice in the first 15 minutes to silence a capacity 55,000-strong home crowd.

Florent Malouda opened the scoring seven minutes into the game when he surprised Georgia keeper Grigol Chanturia with a 20-metre drive and Louis Saha doubled the lead with another low blast after a neat feed from Thierry Henry eight minutes later.

The visitors made it 3-0 less than a minute after the break to put the Group B encounter beyond doubt. Henry was credited with the goal which was inadvertently directed into his own net by Georgia fullback Malkhaz Asatiani.

The Georgians, under new German manager Klaus Toppmoeller, thrashed Faroe Islands 6-0 in their opener two weeks ago.
