Time for rebound?
At a glance
Immediate outlook: Global markets took another beating last week though regional
markets managed to rebound slightly at the end of the week. The Kuala Lumpur
Composite Index (KLCI) closed 96pts or 7.5% lower week-on-week. On Friday, it
touched an intra-day low of 1,141, just above 1,138, the 50% Fibonacci retracement
from a low of 885.84 to a high of 1,391.57. Last Friday’s mid-day rebound suggests
that we may have seen the low for the index this round. This week, we expect the
index to trade sideways between 1,180 and 1,200 before it rebounds to 1,210-1,226.
There is also a small possibility that it may rebound to 1,250-1,267. For short-term
traders, this is a good time to pick up beaten-up stocks with good fundamentals.
Medium-term outlook (2-6 months): Since last month, we have been warning
investors of increasing danger of a sudden decline. We did see a very sharp decline
over the past couple of weeks. The collapse of the 1,330-1,335 support confirms that
the new MT consolidation is underway. Both the 1,285 and 1,200 supports gave way
easily. Indicators are still negative, suggesting that any rebound is likely to be shortlived.
LT investors should continue to sell into rallies. We believe that this MT
consolidation could last up to 1-5 months.
