What a very sad end to the World Cup Final. We do not yet know for certain why Zin閐ine Zidane, the calmest, most skilful and most graceful footballer at the World Cup chose, 10 minutes from time, to take three steps up to Marco Materazzi and headbutt him in the chest. We know that seconds before, he had been laughing at the hulking centre-half, having just received a pinch in the chest.

In their condemnation last night, the commentators last night, Shearer, Lineker and Hansen, showed no interest in what had caused this calm man to fly into such a rage.

The Guardian today suggests that Materazzi called Zidane a "terrorist", presumably in some disgusting reference to his Algerian descent. This seems a compelling explanation for the anger of such an otherwise calm and collected player.

If the account is true, Materazzi would be guilty of an offence in this country: racially aggravated disorderly conduct, on the basis of abuse of someone because of their nationality. Why should footballers put up with racist abuse or racially aggravated insults without protection? If it is crime off the pitch, why (if indeed it has happened) should Matterazi feel he can insult the best player in the world for his nationality?

It is interesting to see that Shearer and his ilk can be sympathetic to Wayne Rooney, who kicked another centre-half in the gonads without any verbal provocation, but completely unsympathetic to Zidane, who may be reacting to racially aggravated abuse. Shearer actually responded to the Rooney incident by suggesting that the Manchester forward may want to stick one on his Portuguese colleague Ronaldo.

If the Guardian account is true, what action will Fifa be taking against Matterazi, given its promotion throughout this World Cup of the Say No to Racism campaign?

Another France- Italy clash

MAGNY COURS: It's another clash between Italy and France, but this time it will be car makers not footballers determining the title as this weekend's French Grand Prix shapes up as a Ferrari-Renault affair.

Ferrari's return to form continues after seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher led a 1-2 finish at the United States Grand Prix to notch his the third win in 10 races this year.

The other seven races have gone to Renault, six of which were claimed by current world champion Fernando Alonso claiming, while teammate Giancarlo Fisichella took the other.

Alonso is looking to rebound after Schumacher broke Alonso's four-race winning streak.

The Spaniard's fifth place at Indianapolis was his lowest finish of the season and the first time he has been off the podium since the Hungarian Grand Prix in July 2005 when he finished 11th.

While Alonso has a comfortable 88-69 lead over Schumacher in the driver's standings, he's not taking it easy.

? won four races in a row before Indy, but I always said that the championship was not over, and it sounded really pessimistic,'' he said.

?ut a gap of 25 points before Indy didn't mean that we would be champions automatically, and now that the gap is 19 points.''

Alonso dominated last year's French Grand Prix, leading McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen and Schumacher to the podium.

?t was a fantastic race last year, one of the best for me,'' Alonso said of his fifth win of the 2005 the season. However he won just two more of the final nine races.

?ou have to look at the big picture for the championship,'' he said. ? was first or second at nine of the ten races and in the next eight races, I think we will be able to keep on winning and increase the lead even more.''

Raikkonen was the last non Renault-Ferrari driver to win a race when he won the Japanese Grand Prix last October.

History is on Schumacher's side at the French GP, which he has won seven times.

A victory for the German on Sunday would be the first time a Formula One driver has won the same race eight different times.

Schumacher is looking at the driver's standings rather than the history books.

?he gap to Alonso is 19 points and we want to make this up,'' he said.

?he second part of the race will be a dash to the title.''

Schumacher remains optimistic.

? have certainly not given up hope,'' he said.

?he challenge of a making up the gap will bring out the best in us.''

This weekend's race represents a milestone of sorts.

The first race officially called a Grand Prix was in France 100 years ago at Le Mans in June 1906, although the official Formula One circuit started in 1950. ? AP

Thuram faults Zidane抯 head-butt and Materazzi抯 provocation

[quote]PARIS: France defender Lilian Thuram disagreed with Zinedine Zidane抯 head-butt in the World Cup final and said the Italy player who provoked him was hurting football.

Thuram said in an interview published yesterday by the weekly Les Inrockuptibles that he understood Zidane抯 reaction to Marco Materazzi for insulting his family but that the timing was wrong.

Zidane, France抯 captain, rammed Materazzi in extra time and was sent off. France lost 5-3 on penalties.

Thuram said he and Zidane, who planned to retire after the final, spoke briefly after the game.

揗aterazzi insulted his family. I understand that Zidane reacted. But not on the field, not on the field,拻 Thuram said. 揌e made a mistake and he knows it. To be clear, I don抰 think it affected the result. But, well, Zidane knows that he was tricked.拻

Players like Materazzi hurt the game, Thuram was quoted as saying.

揟his type of player is a sickness. It shouldn抰 exist ... Materazzi gives a negative image to football,拻 Thuram said.

Materazzi has admitted insulting Zidane, but denied he verbally attacked his mother.

FIFA is conducting an investigation. Materazzi appeared before a disciplinary committee last Friday, and Zidane is scheduled to appear on Thursday.

Zidane apologised to mainly children on French TV last week, and said he did not regret the incident because Materazzi insulted his mother and sister.

Defender Thuram mulls over France future

PARIS: Barcelona defender Lilian Thuram said he will not be rushed into accepting to play again for France when the World Cup runners-up travel to Georgia for their first Euro 2008 qualifier next month.

Thuram, who joined the Spanish champions from demoted Juventus during the close season, was instrumental in France? progress to the final in Germany last month after coming out of international retirement last year.

? will think a lot before I make a decision,? Thuram said.

? am very likely to be called up (by coach Raymond Domenech). My decision will not be linked to his decision. It will not influence me,? the 34-year-old added.

Thuram, who has won 121 caps for Les Bleus, was first picked by Domenech for a friendly against Ivory Coast in August 2005 more than a year after announcing his international retirement.

Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele had decided to come out of international retirement of their own accord to help a struggling France team but Thuram was more reluctant and said he had to wait for Domenech to ask him to return.

The French play Georgia in Tbilisi on Sept 2 then host Italy four days later at the Stade de France in a rematch of the World Cup final in Berlin that Les Bleus lost on penalties.

Thuram was not called up for Wednesday? friendly against Bosnia because he has to play in the Spanish Super Cup match with Barcelona against city rivals Espanyol on Thursday. ? Reuters
