United's defence of the Manchester Senior Cup continued with a routine group stage win over Oldham Athletic, while the intriguing subplot was provided by an impressive 45-minute cameo from Gabriel Obertan.
The French winger caught the eye with his sleight of foot and devastating speed during an opening half in which quickfire goals from Febian Brandy and Sam Hewson essentially took the points, while Joshua King bagged his third goal in as many games to add late gloss to the scoreline.

Obertan makes Red Devils bow
Manchester United new-boy Gabriel Obertan finally got to make his long-awaited appearance in Red Devils colours at Hyde.
Along with Brazilian full-back Rafael Da Silva, Obertan completed the first 45 minutes of a 3-0 Manchester Senior Cup win over Oldham.
It marks the end of a frustrating start to life at Old Trafford for the former France Under-21 star, who was snapped up from Bordeaux in the summer by Sir Alex Ferguson.
An outstanding prospect as a teenager, Obertan's career has stalled after a succession of injuries in recent times and almost as soon as Obertan had completed his £3million move to the Old Trafford club, Ferguson revealed he would be sidelined for a matter of months after developing spinal problems.
However, Bordeaux coach and former United defender Laurent Blanc still feels Obertan can enjoy a successful career and Sir Alex Ferguson no doubt received news this evening with a measure of hope as he continues his short break in New York.
Both Obertan and Rafael, who was forced to have shoulder surgery in the summer, will realistically be looking towards the Carling Cup trip to Barnsley on October 27 to make their first senior appearances of the season.
Ferguson will also be kept informed of Wayne Rooney's fitness after the England striker picked up a calf injury during his own superb performance in the Ukraine on Saturday.
In the manager's absence, Rooney will be monitored by United's medical staff, with Ferguson expected to receive a more detailed update on the forward's fitness when he gets back to Manchester on Thursday.
That is 24 hours before he must contact the FA to offer his observations for the widely-publicised attack on referee Alan Wiley, which triggered Saturday's surprise apology.

Van Gaal: I was nearly a Red
Louis van Gaal has revealed he came close to succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2002.
The Dutchman, who is now ruling the roost at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, was approached by United's movers and shakers as they desperately sought a replacement for Ferguson who had announced that he was going to retire.
Having impressed as a coach both at Ajax and Barcelona, van Gaal talked to United's then chief executive Peter Kenyon about a move to Old Trafford, only for Ferguson to change his mind and continue overseeing the Red Devils' fortunes.
"It was before the World Cup of 2002," said van Gaal.
"I was in contact with Manchester United through Peter Kenyon.
"It was said to me that Alex Ferguson was going to retire.
"The moment he'd go, I'd succeed him. But in the end Ferguson didn't want to quit."

Fergie berdepan masalah besar
LONDON: Alex Ferguson bakal berdepan dakwaan oleh Persatuan Bola Sepak England (FA), minggu ini berikutan 'serangannya' ke atas pengadil, Alan Wiley walaupun sudah ada percubaan memohon maaf yang sebaliknya dilihat seumpama 'mencurah minyak ke dalam api'.
Difahamkan selepas menuntut pengurus Manchester United itu memberikan penjelasan terhadap cercaan yang dihamburkan sewaktu dia menggelar Wiley ‘tidak layak’, FA pada minggu lalu secara sulit membincangkan untuk mendakwa Ferguson andai dia tidak menarik balik cercaannya itu.
Namun, segala petunjuk kelmarin, penjelasan Ferguson tidak memadai untuknya mengelak daripada sebarang tindakan. Pengurus United kini mempunyai masa sehingga esok untuk menyerahkan keterangannya kepada FA.
Sementara itu, peguam sukan terkemuka Britain memberi amaran kepada Ferguson betapa Wiley mempunyai justifikasi untuk menyaman pengurus kelab juara Eropah itu bagi menghalang dia daripada terus membuli.
Mel Goldberg yang mengetuai Persatuan Sukan dan Undang-Undang Britain berkata, Wiley mempunyai kes yang kukuh dalam saman fitnah selepas Ferguson menganggap dia tidak layak.
Malah, pengurus itu masih boleh disaman walaupun memohon maaf.
“Ferguson berkata sesuatu yang terbukti tidak benar dan boleh ditafsirkan sebagai membuat kenyataan palsu.
“Saya fikir Wiley mempunyai justifikasi cukup kuat mengambil tindakan undang-undang andai dia masih tidak berpuas hati terhadap sebarang hukuman yang dibuat oleh FA.
“Kesatuan pengadil ‘Prospect’ jelas menyokong Wiley menyaman Ferguson andai FA tidak menghentikan tingkah laku yang suka membuli.” - Agensi |
