Korean wave spreads to Iran

By Shirley Han Ying
Journalist at Press TV, Iran-based English-language TV Network

From clothes to hairstyle, pop music to TV dramas, Korea has been affecting the life of many Asians in recent years, now even in Iran.

Mohammad Fazaeli turned on TV and started watching the tele-drama at home with his whole family. It was the latest hit series on Iranian State Television - a Korean blockbuster.

"Jewel in the Palace," a soap opera about a cook who overcame hardships to become a royal palace physician in ancient Korea, was known as Yangom in Iran.

This drama along with "Emperor of the Sea (Haesin)" was among Fazaeli's favorites. "My family and I watch most of the Korean dramas aired on TV, and also the latest Korean and Asian movies popular in the world," said Fazaeli.

Iran was unclaimed ground until about a year ago, when MBC hit soap "Jewel in the Palace" was first aired there. The response was explosive. Since then, three out of Iran's seven channels have broadcast a Korean TV series. Two to three dramas were aired throughout the year and in the case of movies, there were even more.

The 27-year-old journalist explained that television was a family entertainment in Iran, and people looked at it as a chance to spend some valuable time with their families. He said that was why most Iranians prefer Korean dramas, which are less violent and contain less sexual content than Hollywood or western productions.

He added that Korean dramas had both action and emotion in them. The actions were attractive and the emotional aspect was not very sloppy.

Alireza Abazari, a 38-year-old expert in political and international relations, has also been a long-time fan of the Korean TV series. "Their approach toward traditions in the modern day, and they pay attention to socio-humanitarian values," said Abazari.

Anoushirvan Akhlaghi, 43, a TV news producer, said he found the Korean dramas had very interesting plots, good story lines and unique pictures. He also enjoyed the pace very much.

Maryam Ebrahimi, a 26-year-old computer engineer, considered one of the reasons that made Korean productions popular in Iran was because they fit the conservative values of the Islamic nation.

Iran is a non-secular country dominated by restrictive Islamic rules.

Foreign films are not commonly shown in movie theaters as part of a ban on films originating from the West. Except for Iranian domestic productions, some classic and contemporary Hollywood productions are also available on state television, but are normally heavily censored.

Korean dramas and movies on the other hand act as a filter for Western values, making them more palatable to Iranian people. Korean TV dramas typically deal with family issues, love, and filial piety in an age of changing technology and values. The shows tend to reinforce traditional values of Confucianism that Iranians find more closely aligned to Islamic culture.

"Jewel in the Palace" is just one of the Korean imports turning on many generations of Iranians and influencing them to buy Korean products.

Fazaeli said Korean brands, such as LG, Samsung and Daewoo, are very common in Iran. These electronic Korean imports have become a part of many Iranian families' daily life. Abazari on the other hand said his main interests in Korean products are shoes and clothes.

Culturally, Fazaeli told me that "Korean music has become popular through the TV dramas. Many people even use the music as their mobile phones' ringtone."

The overwhelming success of Korean dramas, movies, and music served as a major tourist magnet since 2005, attracting millions of tourists each year from the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, the Marshall Islands and China.

As the Korean wave carries on in Iran, people are expected to see another surge among the Iranian tourists to join the nonstop heat.

"After watching the 'Jewel in the Palace,' the natural sceneries of Korea shown in the dramas along with historical monuments have interested me so much that I really want to visit the country," said Abazari.

Not only in Iran, the Korean Wave is also the latest trend sweeping the Middle East. More than three hundred Egyptians launched a fan club and opened a "Winter Sonata" website. A growing number of Egyptians have been requesting a rerun of the KBS soap.

"Emperor of the Sea" was broadcast by Turkish Radio and Television for an hour every Sunday night. The drama received rankings of top 30 out of 100 shows aired. KBS also agreed with Jordan to air the show in the country, and could take "Winter Sonata" to Tunisia and Iraq.

Other Korean broadcasters are also looking into a plan to distribute the drama for free in more Middle Eastern countries. Within the next a few years, the Korean Wave in the Middle East would grow stronger and stronger, maybe even more wide-spread than in the South and
East Asia.

ChanMi's drama news] Kim Seon-ah and Lee Dong-geun, deep kiss scenes!

Nothing else needs to be explained, there was a kiss scene and that's that.

Right?

Well, just in case you're curious for more.

MBC drama "When It's At Night" aired today Kim Seon-ah and Lee Dong-geon's deep kiss scenes are the talk of the town.

It wasn't just once.. but twice!

Cho-hee(Kim Seon-ah) was grateful to Beom-sang(Lee Dong-geun) for helping her find the lost artifact so she decided to buy him some drinks. But, when they're both under the influence and seated next to each other... with a few glances at each other, they kissed! But it was in Beom-sang's dream.

The second time came around when Cho-hee declared that she never could see him as a man. And that got him competitive! He grabbed her by the arm and gave her a smooch.

This definitely stirrs jealousy among the women species. The fans fell in love with Beom-sang's tough manly leadership.

Singer Found Dead; Cause Still Unknown

By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter

Eom I-ra

A female singer was found dead in her house in southern Seoul, Sunday, with the exact cause of her death remaining unknown.

The 24-year-old Eom I-ra was found dead lying on her bed by her friend who shared the apartment.

Police first suspected she choked on her own vomit after drinking heavily the night before. However, Eom's friends who drank with her said she was not drunk, and had drank only one cocktail.

Her family requested the National Institute of Scientific Investigation to perform an autopsy, which concluded Monday that the cause of death was not suffocation. The final results will be released in two weeks. A police officer said there was no evidence of foul play.

Eom, who released her debut album "The Story of 12 Love" last year, had worked as a flight attendant for more than a year. She started singing professionally following a recommendation from an entertainment agent who was on a flight she was working on.

Her agent said Eom suffered from depression and anthropophobia ? a pathological fear of people ? last year after her debut was not as successful as she hoped. They said she had started working on her second album two months ago.

Lawyers vie for top spot in drama line-up

Image from daum.net

Though the tagline for MBC's new Wednesday and Thursday night miniseries "Daehanminguk Byeonhosa" is "Love versus money," with two superhero dramas out right now it should really read, "superheroes versus lawyers."

Following on the heels of the abysmal drama on reporters, "Spotlight," which ended on a sour note last Thursday, this romantic comedy will need more than a few lawyers to keep it abreast of its SBS competitor "Iljimae."

The star power of Lee Jun-ki as a Joseon Dynasty superhero in the hit SBS drama has swept viewer ratings nationwide. And celebrities Lee Sung-jae and Lee Soo-kyung will need to showcase some stellar acting and flawless comic timing in order to nab audiences in " Daehanminguk Byeonhosa (The Lawyers of the Great Republic Korea)."

Actor Lee, who made his mark playing ruthless businessmen in flicks like "Public Enemy" (2002) and "Shin Suk-Ki Blues" (2004), takes his turn on the small screen playing the head of a finance group slapped in the face with a whopping 100 billion won divorce lawsuit by his trophy wife Lee Ae-ri.

"Well I was up against the hit drama 'Jumong' at one point," said actor Lee, 37, at a press conference held last week, when asked about how he feels about going up against "Iljimae."

Lee's good natured response, however, did not hide the miniseries' somewhat lackluster plotline or the relative lack of confidence of his co-star Lee Soo-kyung, who revealed that this is the first time she is acting in a miniseries.

Actress Lee, who will be playing an inept but earnest divorce lawyer representing Lee Sung-jae's character in the lawsuit, made her mark playing a minor role in the SBS weekend drama "Dear Heaven" (2005) before taking on a larger role in MBC's "Soulmate" (2006).

In both shows, she charmed audiences as a clueless and innocent girl falling in love. While her latest role as a divorce lawyer possesses some of the qualities of her previous characters, it still represents a radical departure for Lee.

"If in the past, I played a lot of dependent characters, this time I am playing a character who is independent," said actress Lee, 26.

But what Lee may lack in experience, she makes up for with spunk. The feisty actress packs a stiff punch, and co-star Ryu Soo-young, who is playing her ex-boyfriend, can testify to it.

"It's the first time I have been slapped so hard that my cheek got swollen," said actor Ryu, 28, who was slapped over 10 times by actress Lee while filming a scene.

In the scene, actor Ryu's character returns after going M.I.A. for six years and expects his girlfriend to welcome him back with open arms.

"But in reality, if someone came back after six years and asked to move back in, I think he would get hit too," said Ryu.

Actor Ryu proved he could do comedy in the KBS drama "18 vs. 29" (2005). In his new role he plays both ex-boyfriend and rival to actress Lee by taking on the role of opposition divorce lawyer representing the wife of actor Lee's character.

But don't be fooled by the title or the presence of lawyers, this drama is not a Korean version of the hit U.S. series "Ally McBeal."

"It is not a genre drama about lawyers," said director Yoon Jae-moon. "It is a romantic comedy about four people ... Since it's hot this summer, I want to do a drama that makes people feel refreshed."

For those a little tired of all the superheroes whizzing around on the small screen, a.k.a. of SBS' Iljimae and KBS' Chil-woo, this romantic comedy may be just what the doctor ordered.

"Daehanminguk Byeonhosa" airs tonight at 9:55 p.m. on MBC.

'90s Film Reborn as Musical Rendition

By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter

Oh Man-seok stars in 'The Harmonium in My Memory,'
a movie-turned-musical.

Actor Oh Man-seok will return to the stage with a new film-based musical, "The Harmonium in My Memory'' from July 22.

The film (1999) of the same name featuring award-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon and hallyu star Lee Byung-hun, will be adapted into the musical show.

Oh will alternate playing the leading role of Kang Dong-soo, an elementary school teacher with rising musical star Cho Jung-seok.

The role of Yoon Hong-yeon, which was played by Jeon in the film version, will be played by Lee Jung-mi and Jang Eun-ah who starred in "Mamma Mia!"

According to Show Tic, the production company, the musical rendition will focus on reviving the romantic atmosphere and literary sensitivity of the 1960s on stage as the film did. "The Harmonium in My Memory" is also the big-screen adaptation of best-selling Korean novel "Female Student."

The story is about the first love of adolescents in a remote village area in the 1960s. It revolves around Kang, aged 23, who is teaching for the first time at the elementary school in the region and Yoon, the 16-year-old elementary student.

Kang is portrayed as a warm-hearted man and takes good care of his class pupils, who're mostly children from poor families.

Yoon, a 6th grader but much older than most of her classmates, gradually falls in love with Kang.

Her daily diary, a school assignment, reveals not only her strong feelings for Kang but her humorous daily life and her constant ranting about the sexual bias against females in her family in the village.

"The original novel was published in 1980s and the film was made in 1990s and now the musical rendition will be made in 2000s, showing the tireless energy of the work because of its pure and touching story," a public relations official of the company, said.

But the musical will feature visually catching pink-toned stage sets to exude a romantic atmosphere, along with modern music and choreography played by 21 actors to curry favor with the modern audience.

This musical is drawing attention from the public not only because it is based on the well-known film but also because of Oh's return to the stage.

The actor made his debut in 1999 through the play "Faust." He is better known as Hedwig in the long-running musical, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."

Starring in such musicals as "Grease" and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," Oh achieved stardom with the KBS mini-series "The Man of the Vineyard."

Since then, Oh has starred in a thriller film "Our Town (2007)" and the SBS historical drama "The King and I."

The musical will be put on stage at Hoam Arts Hall from July 22 to Sept. 11. Tickets cost from 35,000 won to 70,000 won. For more information, call (02) 751-9606.

Seo Taiji抯 ETPFest to Be Held in Seoul

By Elise Yoon
Staff Reporter

Korean popular musician Seo Taiji will host and perform at the fourth ETPFest on August 14-15, 2008 in Seoul.
Seo Taiji Company will host the fourth ETPFest (Eerie Taiji People Festival) on August 14-15, 2008. The event is to be held at the Jamsil Sports Complex in Jamsil-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul.

Korean popular musician and producer Seo Taiji (born Jeong Hyeon-chul) made his debut with the band Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992 and its explosive hit "I Know." The group pioneered blending American styles of hip-hop, gangster rap, rock, and metal into Korean popular music, presenting a distinct sound with each album release.

The band officially ended their career together in 1996 while Seo Taiji continued to put out solo albums. Aside from a greatest hits compilation last year, Taiji hasn't released an album since 2004, also the year of the last ETPFest. This will be the first ETPFest in four years and is seen as a sort of comeback for Taiji. Though somewhat reclusive, his fans remain loyal and Taiji an idol.

Seo Taiji's controversiol "Classroom Ideology" criticized the Korean educational system. The heavy metal-influenced sound and critical content drew accusations of brainwashing Korean youth. Similarly, Marilyn Manson has been blamed for such tragedies as the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, and other misbehavior by American youth.

The two counterculture icons are slated to perform along with a diverse lineup including Korean pop fusion group Clazziquai Project, American indie rock band Death Cab for Ctuie, and Japanese groups Monkey Majik, and Dragon Ash.

Tickets can be purchased through ticket.cjmall.com and more information is available at www.etpfest.com

last Friday. / Yonhap

Korean singer Lucid Fall (33) has obtained a doctor's degree in biotechnology in Switzerland, Yonhap news reported.

As a graduate of Seoul National University department of Chemical Engineering, Lucid Fall obtained his doctoral degree at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne by submitting a paper titled 'Polymeric Carriers for Therapeutic Agents: Drug and Gene Delivery Systems by RAFT Polymerization.'

According to his agency Antenna Music, Lucid Fall attracted the judge's attention for wearing the Korean traditional costume "hanbok" when presenting his paper. He was put into a greater spotlight after he was revealed as a singer in Korea.

Last year in November, Lucid Fall was awarded a scientific award by Swiss Chemical Society:SCS, the same month his third album "Night at the Border" was released.

"The research was so interesting that despite difficulties, I could work without any break," "I seem to have worked so hard and busy these past days that no thought occurs to me at this moment. I will start on the new album after finishing up my research project" said Lucid Fall.

Movie-Based Dramas to Fill TV Screens

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Hyun Bin will star in a new drama "Friends" THe Unfinished Tale (working title),''
the remake of hit movie "Friend (2001).'' / Korea Times file

Amid the ongoing search for catchy, stylish, attractive ideas for local dramas, many drama-makers have turned to themes that have already been seen to be popular. Movie-based dramas are no longer new, but the race for the best-made remake is expected to get more competitive with "IRIS," "Tazza" (working title), "Friends: The Unfinished Tale" (working title) and "Beat."

The 1999 movie "Swiri" was a steppingstone for Korean cinema, being considered the first blockbuster movie that captivated local movie fans with its distinctive plot and action scenes. Now the hit movie that depicted the lives of secret agents is coming back to television screens as "IRIS." In order to bring movie-like elements onto the smaller screen, the drama will be written and produced by Taewon Entertainment and Kang Je-kyu Film, both famous movie agencies here, and will boast a budget of 20 billion won. Korean heartthrob Lee Byung-hun ("All-in," 2003) will appear as the mysterious secret agent, his first drama in five years, along with pop group Big Bang's T.O.P as an assassin. It will be directed by director Kang Je-kyu and produced by Lee Hyeong-min ("Sorry, I Love You," 2004). "IRIS" will be aired next year.

Another movie-based drama, "Tazza" is expected to be released this coming August. The movie "Tazza: The High Rollers" was a big hit back in 2006, with the attractive Kim Hye-soo as the seductive Madam Jeong and actor Cho Seung-woo as a gambler. Actor Jang Hyuk ("Windstruck," 2004) and Kim Min-jun ("Doctor Bong," 2007) will play the ambitious gamblers, while actress Han Ye-seul will appear as the heroine Gwang-sook. This will be Han's first show in two years after her hit drama "Fantastic Couple" (2006). The role of Madam Jeong is still vacant with candidates such as Sung Hyun-ah and Kang Sung-yeon on the list. While the movie depicts the thrilling lives of professional gamblers, the drama "Tazza" will portray the competitive gambling race between two talented and ambitious young gamblers.

The sad yet stylish story of four best friends living in Busan is also coming to television audiences next year. During a press conference of his new movie "Eye for an Eye," director Kwak Kyung-taek mentioned that he is planning to re-create the popular movie into a 16-series drama. According to Zininsa Film, the drama's production company, the drama will be filmed in Busan and will be entirely pre-produced before actual airing, which is slated for early next year. Actors Hyun Bin ("My Lovely Samsoon," 2005) and Kim Min-jun will star as the main characters, which were played by Jang Dong-kun and Yoo Oh-seong in the movie version.

Fans of Jung Woo-sung ("A Moment to Remember," 2004) and Ko So-young ("Apartment," 2006) will be thrilled to find that the movie which opened the door to the two actors' stardom will be made into a drama. "Beat" was one of the first Korean movies to deal with the lives of teenagers back in 1997. With stylish scenes, memorable lines and fresh faces, the movie instantly became a hit and even now is considered to be unsurpassed in Korean teenage movies. Film company Kim Jong-hak Production recently announced plans to remake the film, but with a slight twist. The drama will be based on teenagers living during the 90s, with some modern elements added. The drama is expected to greet fans next year.
