Wenger backs youngsters to lift trophy
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said his young side can go one better and win the Carling Cup this season.
Wenger watched his second-string side, with an averageage of 20-and-a-half years, beat Blackburn 3-2 after extra-time last night to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Arsenal came within six minutes of taking Chelsea to extra-time in last year's final, only for a second Didier Drogba goal to deny Wenger's youngsters of winning the trophy.
This season they have already fought their way into the last four and Wenger sees no reason why they can not go all the way.
"We want to finish the job. We got the taste of the final last year and now we're in the semi-final again so that shows that it was not a co-incidence last year," he said.
"Now we have two big games and we'll see who we get.
"Last year we got Tottenham in the semi-final and it wouldn't be a surprise if we got them again."
Wenger was pleased that his youngsters held up to the physical test against Blackburn at Ewood Park last night.
Much has been made of Arsenal's senior team being able to cope with the more rough and ready approach of opponents this season and Wenger is fully aware of the quality he has in reserve.
"I believe strongly in them and I'm not surprised by their performances.
"It's difficult to say how they would get on in the Premiership but they are all good Premiership players."
Arsenal will find out who they will meet in the semi-finals when the draw is made after tonight's final quarter-final between Chelsea and Liverpool.
Spurs booked their place in the last four by inflicting Manchester City withtheir first home defeat of the season, while Everton last week secured their spot by overcoming West Ham at Upton Park. |

Djourou waiting for arsenal decision
Arsenal defender Johan Djourou, who is on loan at Birmingham City, is not sure whether he will be at St Andrews in the second half of the season.
The Gunners boss Arsene Wenger apparently is yet to decide whether to recall the Swiss international next month when the north London club will be without defender Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue, due to their commitment to play in the African Nations Cup.
As such, Djourou, who has been a key player for the Blues and manager Alex McLeish is looking to extend the loan, is waiting but claims he will be happy either way.
"Obviously I love my club Arsenal and if they want me back, hopefully it will be for a good reason," Djourou told Sky Sports News.
"I want to play there as well. It is a difficult choice but I haveto accept what the manager is going to do. I would be happy in both situations." |

Randall - We have lots of English boys coming through

When Mark Randall woke up on Tuesday morning he was hoping to play some part in Arsenal's Carling Cup tie at Blackburn. He certainly wasn't expecting to make his first senior start.
That all changed when Theo Walcott woke up feeling under the weather. One England teenager's pain became another England teenager's gain as Randall was drafted into the line-up for the dramatic win at Ewood Park.
"I knew when we got to the training ground in the morning that Theo wasn't travelling with us but I still didn't know if I was starting or not," Randall told Arsenal.com. "I found out I was playing about three hours before the game and I was just happy to get the chance.
"I felt nervous but I just tried to relax and think of what I had to do during the game. I tried to keep a cool head. The more experienced players like Philippe Senderos gave me a lot of advice and encouragement and they kept me working hard. The boss told me to stay relaxed and play my game."
That's exactly what Randall did. The 18-year-old looked completely at ease in the first half as Arsenal stroked the ball around in style. He even played a vital role in the opening goal, picking out Nicklas Bendtner with a measured pass before the Dane's cross was converted by Abou Diaby.
Randall tired after the break and was replaced by another teenager, Nacer Barazite, with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. But the midfielder from Milton Keynes had done enough to prove that Arsenal do have talented English youngsters emerging from their academy.
Kieran Gibbs and Henri Lansbury have also featured in this season's Carling Cup run while Rhys Murphy and Gavin Hoyte are making steady progress. Randall believes they will all get their chance to impress - provided they put the work in.
"It's hard work to get into the first team but if you are good enough you will get a chance," said Randall.
"There are plenty of young English players coming through like Henri Lansbury, Gavin Hoyte and Rhys Murphy - we just have to keep working hard to get into the first team." |

Wenger - We're through, now let's finish the job

Even Arsenal's most optimistic fans might have been bracing themselves for defeat on Tuesday night - but Ars鑞e Wenger wasn't.
The young Gunners, with an average age of 20, squandered a two-goal lead against Blackburn and looked to be heading for the Carling Cup exit after losing Denilson to a red card and Nacer Barazite to a dislocated shoulder.
Instead, Arsenal dug deeper than ever to snatch a thrilling 3-2 victory in extra time, courtesy of Eduardo's clinical finish. A third successive Semi-Final awaits them in the New Year.
So was Wenger surprised by his team's incredible show of character? Not at all. "I believe very strongly in this team and I am not surprised," said the Frenchman afterwards.
"I am very happy because today it was more the physical and the mental test during a big part of the game and they stood up to it. After we were down to 10 men it was a mental test and we found the resources to score the goal and win the tie.
"Now we want to finish the job. We got a taste of the Final last year and now we are in the Semi-Final again so that shows that it was not a coincidence last year.
"We will have two big games now and it will cost a lot of energy. We will see who we get. Last year we got Tottenham and it won't be a surprise if we get them again."

Arsenal Recall Djourou
Birmingham manager Alex McLeish has confirmed that Swiss international defender Johan Djourou will return to Arsenal when his loan deal expires in January.
The Blues boss admitted that he was disappointed to be conveying the news as he had been hoping to convince his Arsenal counterpart to lend him the talented young centre-back until at least the end of the season.
"Arsene Wenger has told me he is taking him back in January," said the former Scotland coach.
"He will be a loss, for sure. It is disappointing that he is not going to be with us for much longer.
"But, you have to respect Arsenal's decision.
"Johan is a big presence of a boy, no doubt about that, and those kind of players seem to be a feature of many a squad in the Premier League."
The 20-year-old is bound to be heartened by the news, as he had just recently expressed concern about the uncertainty of his future.
Djourou has been a vital cog in the Blues defense this season since arriving on loan from the Gunners in the summer.
