Premier League Team Of The Week: Round 17
Graham Lister considers the outstanding performers in the Barclays Premier League during a weekend dominated in the media by Grand Slam Sunday, but which also included some notable performances on Saturday - when two games alone produced 14 goals. [The other nine games over the weekend yielded 11 goals between them].
Hahnemann Neville
Ferdinand
Gallas
Clichy Taylor
Anderson
Flamini
Jenas Bent
Santa Cruz
Goalkeeper
1 - Marcus Hahnemann (Reading)
The American keeper was in defiant mood for Reading at St Andrews and but for his excellence Birmingham would almost certainly have scored more - meaning the Royals would probably not have earned a point.
Defenders
2 - Phil Neville (Everton)
Neville personified the hard work and grit on which Everton's superb unbeaten run has been built, leading by example and helping to ensure the Toffees kept a clean sheet at West Ham.
3 - Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United)
Probably invidious to split Ferdinand and has central defensive partner Nemanja Vidic. Both were immense at Anfield against Liverpool, but Ferdinand shades it for his cool reading of each threatening situation and his athleticism in snuffing it out.
Weathered Liverpool's early storm resolutely and rarely allowed Fernando Torres any space.
4- William Gallas (Arsenal)
A captain's performance from Gallas, who not only scored the all-important match-winner against Chelsea but also drove his team his team on to protect their lead.
Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claimed Gallas had threatened to score an own goal if he did not get a move away from Stamford Bridge. The accusation outraged Gallas, who was determined to be a winner against the Blues on Sunday. He made sure he and Arsenal were.
5 - Gael Clichy (Arsenal)
The consummate left-back performance from the young Frenchman who ensured Shaun Wright-Philips had a frustrating afternoon while lending valuable support to the Arsenal attack at every opportunity.
Midfielders
6 - Ryan Taylor (Wigan Athletic)
Taylor was instrumental in Wigan's first win in 14 attempts with some lively and penetrative midfield play.
His superb cross from the left early on set the tone, deceiving Ryan Nelsen but hitting Marcus Bent in the face
with only Brad Friedel to beat.
He continued to be a springboard for much of the Latics' attacking play. His free-kick was perfectly flighted for Paul Scharner to head home Wigan's third. He was fouled by Brett Emerton for the Australian's second yellow card as Blackburn struggled to contain him.
7 - Anderson (Manchester United)
Both the Brazilian and Owen Hargreaves, in their first Liverpool-United derby, were hugely influential in the Manchester midfield, and Anderson particularly caught the eye.
Not only did he scramble a Harry Kewell shot off the line, but his all-round showing was one of power and maturity, despite there having been pre-match doubts about his fitness. His manager Sir Alex Ferguson summed it up on MUTV when he said:
"Anderson was terrific, he wasn't intimidated by Steven Gerrard. I thought he handled that particular part of the game really well."
8 - Mathieu Flamini (Arsenal)
The tireless Frenchman is one of those unsung players whose value to the team is immense but often only really apparent when he's unavailable. Arsenal had missed him through injury in their previous three games but he returned against Chelsea to turn in a typically committed, all-action display as the Gunners imposed themselves on the midfield.
9 - Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham Hotspur)
Spurs are improving under Juande Ramos and their display at Portsmouth was their best yet, certainly away from home. Central to it was the contribution of Jenas, an often frustratingly enigmatic player whose obvious talent is not always adequately expressed. Against Pompey though, Jenas did the simple things well to underline the team's greater cohesion since Ramos took the reins.
Strikers
10 - Marcus Bent (Wigan Athletic) & 11 - Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn Rovers)
The last time two players scored hat-tricks in the same Premier League match was in May 2003 when Robert Pires and Jermaine Pennant hit three apiece in a 6-1 Arsenal win over Southampton. On Saturday at the JJB, Bent and Santa Cruz both claimed trebles, for different sides, in outstanding displays of the striker's craft.
It was heart-breaking for Paraguayan star Santa Cruz, whose hat-trick included a magnificent volley. He said afterwards: Santa Cruz said: 揑t is important to get goals, even though we have lost. I hope against Arsenal in the Carling Cup on Tuesday I can score again but this time to win the game."
Bent, who was first to claim the match-ball and now has it, duly signed by his team-mates, proudly displayed in a cabinet at his home.
After Rovers clawed their way back from 0-3 to 3-3 thanks to Santa Cruz's devastating technique, Bent added the decisive further two in Wigan's 5-3 win, showing great alertness and anticipation, and complementing that with clinical finishing for his first top-flight hat-trick. And he's only on loan from Charlton....
Honourable Mentions
Manuel Almunia (Arsenal) was dependable when called upon against Chelsea and produced three crucial saves.
The Everton central defensive pair of Joseph Yobo and Joleon Lescott were solid as rocks at Upton Park, and Middlesbrough's Jonathan Woodgate looked something like his old self at Derby.
Danny Higginbotham shone for Sunderland and headed home Ross Wallace's corner with powerfully on 10 minutes to give the Black Cats the lead.
Didier Zokora showed class and commitment for Spurs at Pompey, while Nemanja Vidic was an able partner to Ferdinand for Manchester United, and Owen Hargreaves impressed in the Red Devils' midfield.
Tomas Rosicky was arguably the most creative player on show at the Emirates, and the Manchester City pair Michael Johnson and Darius Vassell gave good accounts of themselves.
In attack, Aiyegbeni Yakubu (Everton), Rolando Bianchi (Manchester City), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United), Tuncay Sunli (Middlesbrough) and Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham) all had good claims for inclusion. |
