The Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre (MFTC) was established in 1987 as Malaysia’s representative office in Taipei. Serving as the key point of contact for Malaysia-Taiwan engagement, MFTC operates with official recognition from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Since its inception, MFTC has remained committed to strengthening Malaysia-Taiwan ties while advancing Malaysia’s interests in Taiwan. It actively promotes Malaysian exports, facilitates investment into Malaysia, and highlights Malaysia as a preferred tourism destination. Additionally, MFTC provides consular assistance and support to Malaysians residing in Taiwan and those visiting for business, study, or travel.

Malaysia and Taiwan enjoy positive trade and investment cooperation throughout the years. In 2024, Taiwan was Malaysia’s 4th largest trade partner while Malaysia was Taiwan’s 7th largest trade partner with total trade recorded at USD38.62 billion. Malaysia also remains as a competitive investment location for Taiwanese investors in the manufacturing, services and primary sectors, making Taiwan as Malaysia’s 9th largest investor for the period from January-September 2024.

On people-to-people exchanges, Malaysia remains as the top 10 favourite destination for Taiwanese travellers in 2024 with approximately 300,000 Taiwanese visited Malaysia. More than 30,00 Malaysians are currently residing in Taiwan, in which approximately one third of them are Malaysian students pursuing tertiary education in Taiwan.
