MPAJ plans to demolish rest of Highland Towers

THIRTY years after the Highland Towers collapse, the two abandoned blocks at the site in Hulu Kelang, Selangor can finally be brought down by year end.

Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) is initiating a process to demolish the remaining blocks, following multiple complaints by neighbouring residents.

Its president Dr Ani Ahmad said the process would start with MPAJ issuing a notice to the property owner to demolish the structures.

“The notice will be sent to Highland Properties Sdn Bhd as the site owner, and Malaysian Department of Insolvency as the company’s liquidator.

“Should the company fail to take action (to demolish), MPAJ will initiate a court process to obtain a court order to carry out the demolition,” she said after chairing the council’s full board meeting yesterday.

Ani said the notice was expected to be issued by April.

She added that due process would be carried out according to Sections 87, 88 and 89 of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133).

“If there are no challenges for MPAJ to obtain the court order, and should the court agree, we expect to carry out the demolition sometime after August.

“We estimate it will cost between RM6mil and RM7mil for the demolition works,” she said, adding that MPAJ would claim the cost from the owner.

On Feb 15, MPAJ, along with the police, made a site visit to Highland Towers.

“We received many complaints from nearby residents about trespassers and the place being used by drug addicts.

“It is also an eyesore and affects the value of surrounding properties,” said Ani.

On whether there were plans for the site post-demolition, she said this was yet to be determined.

Two blocks still stand at the abandoned Highland Towers site.

On Dec 11, 1993, one of the three Highland Towers blocks collapsed, killing 48 in the nation’s worst housing tragedy.

Residents of the two remaining towers were evacuated for safety reasons and eventually, the area was abandoned.

In 2018, then Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the site would be turned into a recreational park after demolition of the remaining towers as the area was unsuitable for any structure.

However, this failed to materialise.

HULU KELANG - The demolition of two blocks in Highland Towers is expected to resolve the complaints raised by the community living around the abandoned building.

Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin said the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) has received many complaints regarding security concerns, disturbances and immoral activities in the area.

Following that, on Saturday, he said a visit with MPAJ President Dr Ani Ahmad and the agencies involved was held to find a solution to the complaint.

"This issue is still in discussion. The main possibility is that this abandoned building will be demolished because they don't see any other option (in solving the issues).

"The main objective is to resolve the complaint and after it is demolished, then think about what will be done in the area," he told Sinar on Sunday.

He was met at the first gotong-royong programme for the preparation of Ramadan at the Bukit Antarabangsa Mosque here.

Kamri said this when asked to comment on the demolition status of the abandoned building.

In the collapse tragedy on Dec 11, 1993, one of the three condominium blocks of Highland Towers collapsed, claiming 48 lives.

Since then, the site has been abandoned and has become a hotbed of drug addiction and social problems that cause discomfort among local residents.

Following that, Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin while holding the position of Housing and Local Government Minister in 2019 said that the abandoned building would be demolished.

Zuraida suggested that the site be redeveloped as a recreational park location since the soil structure in the area involved is not suitable for housing construction.

Meanwhile, Ani through the MPAJ's monthly full meeting held recently said that the local authority would issue a notice to the owner of the property involved to demolish the structure.

Ani said the notice would be sent to Highland Properties Sdn Bhd as the owner of the site and the Malaysian Insolvency Department as the liquidator of the company.

He said if the company failed to take action (demolition), MPAJ would begin the process of obtaining a court order to carry out the demolition.

He said the demolition was expected after August if there were no objections in court and the cost of the demolition is estimated to be between RM6 million to RM7 million.

aku pulak tak tahu kenapa ko tak tahu

Beberapa bukti perempuan ni lembam dan layak dikecam:

1. Claim berjiran padahal jarak setengah jam perjalanan dgn helikopter
2. Acah terkejut selepas SETAHUN 'terhijab'
3. Beliau seorang ejen hartanah

There is simply no excuse untuk memperagakan kebodohan sebegini selain memang minta dicerca
