Mulling over Malaysia: Lau is said to be interested to apply for PR status here to raise his daughter with Chu’s family.
PETALING JAYA: Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau will be welcomed to Malaysia with open arms should he apply for permanent resident (PR) status.
However, he will have to go through the procedures like any other person, said Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam.
“To us it's very simple. Generally anybody can apply for PR as long as they are married to a Malaysian,” he said.
He said the 50-year-old Lau could apply online on the Immigration Department website. However, Mahmood confirmed that Lau had yet to formally apply. He also said Lau could apply for a Residence Pass which is renewable every five years, a new initiative by the Government to attract foreign “talent”.
According to Talent Corp Malaysia's website, “talent” refers to high-achieving individuals with the capacity to drive business results that contribute towards Malaysia's economic transformation. “This is for talented people. If Lau is interested, a committee will check his application, just like any other person,” said Mahmood. When asked if Lau would be considered a “talent”, the senior government official beamed and said: “Of course!”
It was previously reported in the Chinese newspapers that Lau was interested in holding PR status in Malaysia to bring up his baby girl. Lau's wife Carol Chu, 45, is seven months' pregnant and is expected to deliver in May in Hong Kong. Chu is a former beauty queen and a Malaysian. According to a Hong Kong magazine, Lau had also increased the number of bodyguards to protect Chu from the harsh media glare. A Chinese language daily reported that Lau might place his daughter with Chu's family to avoid the Hong Kong paparazzi.
One of the most commercially successful actors from Hong Kong, Lau was previously branded by the fans and media as one of the “Four Heavenly Kings” alongside megastars Aaron Kwok, Jackie Cheung and Leon Lai.

Andy Lau’s Daughter Born on May 9th!
The highly anticipated birth of Andy Lau’s (刘德华) daughter finally arrived! Andy’s wife, Carol Chu (朱丽倩), allegedly gave birth to a 6-pound baby girl at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital! TVB actress, Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), announced the good news that Andy became a father on May 9th on her program! The Weibo online community was flooded with celebrities and fans congratulating Andy. Jordan Chan (陈小春) even uploaded a photo of a baby girl, who was strongly suspected to be Andy’s beautiful “Little Dragon Girl”!
Since 50-year-old Andy Lau announced that his wife, 46-year-old Carol Chu, successfully became pregnant last year, fans were ecstatic over the news. Although it was initially reported that her due date was in June 2012, Carol was photographed with an increasingly growing belly recently. It was reported that after consulting with feng shui masters, Andy and Carol selected an auspicious date and hour for their first baby to be born.
Fans Eager to See Andy Lau’s Daughter
Last night at 10 PM, Jordan Chan posted a mysterious photo of a pretty newborn girl, without writing any captions to explain who the baby was. Due to the timing of Jordan’s post on Weibo, fans were quick to speculate that the baby may in fact be Andy Lau’s daughter! Many fans even found a strong resemblance in the baby’s features to Andy Lau–bearing the same large eyes and straight nose!
To clear up any misunderstandings, Jordan’s wife, Cherie Ying (应采儿) clarified on Weibo that the photo of the baby girl was their friend’s daughter! It was a misunderstanding due to Andy Lau’s fans overly eager to see photos of his newborn daughter.
Ada Choi (蔡少芬) wrote excitedly on Weibo, “That’s great! My idol’s daughter is born! I wish their entire family the best! Hope that the baby girl is healthy and his wife has a speedy recovery!”
Andy Lau Does Not Respond to Calls
Andy Lau was an intensely private person that did not always share his personal milestones with the public. In fact, he kept his marriage to Carol Chu a secret for more than a year after the couple obtained their marriage registration in 2008.
The media has been unable to reach Andy or his manager to confirm the birth of his daughter. Meanwhile, a growing mass of reporters gathered outside the Hong Kong Santorium & Hospital, eagerly awaiting the appearance of Andy. |
