Oricon: who do you want to host Kohaku?
Mon, November 10, 2008 (2:19am EST)
With Kohaku Uta Gassen only weeks away, NHK is expected to soon announce this year's celebrity hosts. Research firm Oricon took a look at who the public are hoping for, surveying 1,200 men and women over the internet.
In the male category, SMAP's Masahiro Nakai was the most popular choice. Nakai has been a Kohaku host four times already, including the last two years. He was also the top answer in last year's survey.
The other popular answers were Tamori, Sanma Akashiya, Tsurube Shofukutei (who hosted last year), Shinsuke Shimada, Masaharu Fukuyama, Takuya Kimura, Minomonta, Shosuke Tanihara, and SMAP as a group.
For female celebrities, young actress Aoi Miyazaki was voted #1, showing a boost in popularity after she starred in the taiga drama "Atsuhime." She bumped the previous survey favorite Yukie Nakama, who hosted Kohaku in 2005 and 2006, to second place.
The rest of the list for females were Akiko Wada, Masami Hisamoto, Becky, Norika Fujiwara, Junko Kubo, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, Harumi Edo, and Aya Ueto.

Charts: Miliyah Kato's 1st number-one, Arashi's 20th
Wed, November 12, 2008 (2:35am EST)
Singer Miliyah Kato released her album "BEST DESTINY" last week. It sold 92,000 copies to capture the top of the charts, giving Kato her first #1 album. Her previous best ranking was #2 with her first album "Rose" in 2005. Asian Kung-fu Generation had the only other new music album in the top ten, taking #2 with "Surf Bungaku Kamakura," which sold 56,000.
On the singles chart, Arashi's "Beautiful days" claimed victory with 352,000 in sales. This is their 13th consecutive #1 single and 20th overall. It also marks their fourth #1 this year, tying them with TVXQ. The last Johnny's Jimusho artist to have four chart-toppers in the same year was KinKi Kids in 1999.
Yuzu ranked in at #2 with their new song, while Kazumasa Oda and Spitz charted at #4 and #5, respectively. Three other releases made the top ten: Berryz Koubou (#6), BREAKERZ (#9), and Chatmonchy (#10).

Nakai, Nakama back together at Kohaku
Mon, November 17, 2008 (12:03am EST)
This year's Kohaku Uta Gassen will be hosted by two familiar faces: Masahiro Nakai of SMAP and actress Yukie Nakama. This will be Nakai's fifth (and third consecutive) time as host, and for Nakama it will be her third. Both served as hosts together in 2006.
NHK has not yet made a formal announcement, but newspapers are already reporting that the decision has been made. The official news from the network is expected to be released this week.
Nakai and Nakama have also recently been working together for the film "Watashi wa Kai ni Naritai," in which they play a married couple. The movie opens on November 22.
