SG Wannabe sells 400,000 copies of its album in 2005

The situation in the domestic music record market was gloomy last year.
According to the Recording Industry Association of Korea
(http://www.miak.or.kr), only one album recorded sales of over 400,000 copies in
2005; sales of another four barely surpassed 200,000 copies and those of 14
others were slightly above the 100,000-copy mark.
Sales of the second album from the music band SG Wannabe (including a special
edition) outnumbered those of the third album from singer Kim Jong-kuk by
170,000 copies to reach 414,855 copies. The band also sold 147,047 copies of its
remake album that ranked 12th, thus recording total record sales of 561,902
copies last year.
The runner-up was singer Kim Jong-kuk, the winner of last year's top music
awards from all three major broadcasters in Korea, whose third album recorded
sales of 243,211 copies. He was followed by the young-generation band Buzz
(233,082 copies), the male group TVXQ (222,472 copies)--which has the most fan
clubs among Korean singers, and singer Hwi-sung (213,594 copies, 3rd album).
A total of 14 singers and bands saw their albums post sales of over 100,000
copies, including MC the Max (184,716 copies), Shin Hye-sung (183,463 copies),
Big Mama (163,442 copies), M (161,104 copies), Cho Sung-mo (155,523 copies)
and Hwi-sung (152,665 copies, 4th album).
Of those, Hwi-sung recorded total album sales of 366,259 copies in 2005 alone as
he released both his third and fourth album in a single year.
Last year, music charts were mostly dominated by ballad songs from SG
Wannabe, Kim Jong-kuk, Buzz, MC the Max, Shin Hye-sung, Big Mama and Cho
Sung-mo. Members of music bands who debuted solo, such as Kim Jong-kuk, Shin
Hye-sung, M and Yoon Do-hyun, also performed impressively.
Among remake albums that inundated the music market last year, albums from
SG Wannabe, Na-ul and Lee Sung-chul broke the 100,000-copy mark, ranking
among the top 20.

Group SG Wannabe to Perform in Japan in May

The male trio SG Wannabe will begin full-fledged activities in Japan in May.
An official from the music group's agency, GM Planning, said on Mar. 22, "SG
Wannabe will give its first solo concert in Japan. The concert will be held at the
Stellar Hall of Shinagawa Prince Hotel in Tokyo, Japan on May 13."
At the upcoming performances to be held two times that day at 2:00 p.m. and
6:00 p.m., SG Wannabe will sing its hit songs such as "Timeless," "Crime and
Punishment" and "Gwang" (maniac) as well as OST songs from Korean TV dramas
that were smash hits in Japan. SG Wannabe began drawing Japanese fans when
its song "While I'm Living," the theme song of the TV drama "Sad Love Story,"
became famous in Japan.
The official from the music group's agency expressed optimism, saying, "Although
we have never carried out any PR activities for SG Wannabe in Japan, many
Japanese fans have either sent fan letters to the group or visited our agency
simply based on the group's music that they've listened to. The group's first solo
concert in Japan will likely turn out to be a success."
The agency official also said, "With its great experience onstage, SG Wannabe
plans to surprise its fans with a special performance at its upcoming first solo
concert in Japan."
Actors Song Seung-heon and So Ji-sup will deliver congratulatory video messages
at the upcoming concert in Japan. SG Wannabe will release its third album in the
country on Apr. 5. Songs featured in the album will be introduced beforehand via
MaxMP3 late this month.

Group "SG Wannabe" Receives 200,000 Orders for 3rd Album

The all-male group "SG Wannabe" has received 200,000 orders for its third album
following a showcase concert.
On Apr. 3, SG Wannabe gave the showcase concert to promote its third album at
the New Millennium Hall of Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, which was
constructed in celebration of the 600th anniversary of the university's founding.
SG Wannabe had intended to release its third album on Apr. 5, but began
additional production to enhance its musicality.
An official from "Poibos," the distribution agency of the group's third album,
said, "We have been inundated with phone calls asking about the timing of the
album's release after songs from the album were introduced on MaxMP3, an
online music site, and after the group's showcase concert. Most of the fans
complained about the repeated delays before the album's release."
The official from this distribution agency also said, "We've delayed the release of
the album because we want to enhance its musicality. We're sorry for this. Please
understand SG Wannabe for trying to repay its fans' kindness through quality
music."
Meanwhile, SG Wannabe will give a comeback concert on SBS TV's "Popular
Songs" which will air on Apr. 9.
