A 24-year-old TikToker said people thought she was pregnant after an ovarian cyst the size of a softball ballooned, expanding her belly

A woman went viral on TikTok after sheposted a videoexplaining how an ovarian cyst changed the appearance of her stomach.

Raquel Rodriguez, 24, from Minnesota, showed her stomach from the side, joking that she looked nine months pregnant. She then revealed the bulge was due to an ovarian cyst.

The video has now been viewed 1.3 million times.

"I decided to post that video, honestly, because I just thought it was a funny/light use of the TikTok sound and my problems," Rodriguez toldBuzzfeed.

"I think in some way I was hoping to bring awareness and kinda get over my insecurity surrounding my bloated stomach."

Rodriguez told the news site she found out she had an ovarian cyst five years ago when she had an ultrasound for a kidney infection.

"It was about the size of a softball at first, and it caused some concern but not enough to actually have a removal done back then," she said.

"I had been going in every once in a while to get it checked, and it stayed mostly the same up until, I suppose, recently. I feel it's gotten bigger pretty quickly."

Rodriguez posteda follow-up videothanking people for the messages of support she received in response to the original clip.

"It's amazing to me how many people weren't aware that this could happen so I'm glad that it's bringing awareness," she said.

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops on an ovary and commonly goes away on its own, according to theNHS.

They're don't usually cause any symptoms unless they split, and one of the symptoms of this condition is a bloated and swollen stomach.

A woman has usedTikTokto issue a warning about ovariancysts, after she ended up having what she thought was a “normal” bump removed.

Last week, Kayley Reese, who goes by the username @thesavvykay, uploaded aTikTokin which she shared her experience as a warning to other women.

In the TikTok, Reese, who is from Richmond, Virginia, responded to a video uploaded by another TikTok user, in which the woman could be seen showing a protruding bump that she always has on her lower stomach.

According to Reese, she felt “very compelled” to respond to the video, which has numerous comments from viewers assuring the woman that it is “normal”, because “it is not always completely normal”.

Reese then went on to reveal that she had a similar bump in the same spot that gradually became bigger, prompting her to eventually seek medical attention last month.

At the hospital, Reese said doctors found an eight-inch-long cyst sitting on her left ovary that weighed six to seven pounds and was filled with “two litres of fluid”.

According to Reese, the cyst had the potential to become cancerous and could have caused her to lose both her ovaries.

The TikTok user then shared a before-and-after photo of her stomach with the cyst and after it had been removed, before showing off her “cute new scar”, with Reese encouraging viewers to have any bumps on their body looked at by a doctor.

“If you take one thing from this video, it’s go get your bumps looked at. I also thought it was normal,” Reese concluded, before adding in the comments that she eventually sought a doctor’s opinion because the bump was “completely hard” and “severely protruding” and because she was constantly nauseous and dizzy.

The TikTok, which has since been viewed more than 5.9m times, has been met with a range of supportive comments, with many reiterating Reese’s warning.

“Yes! I kept getting cysts. I have had nine surgeries now, I have endometriosis. Ladies please go get it checked out,” one person commented, while another said: “Yes! Please get checked out, this is how I found out I had ovarian cancer last year.”

According to theMayo Clinic, many women experience ovarian cysts at some point, with the health organisation noting that “most ovarian cysts present little or no discomfort and are harmless” and typically disappear on their own within a few months.

The Mayo Clinic also states that there are multiple types of ovarian cysts, including those caused by endometriosis, a condition in which uterine endometrial cells grow outside your uterus.

To protect your health, the clinic advises undergoing regular pelvic exams and speaking to your doctor if you notice any changes or symptoms such as pelvic pain, bloating, or fullness or heaviness in your abdomen.

Speaking withNewsweek, Reese said that she feels “extremely lucky” to have recovered from the type of cyst and the surgery with both ovaries and fallopian tube intact, adding that she hopes to use her experience to educate others.

“My experience has made me want to use my platform to spread awareness to all young women. If I had seen this video I know I would’ve gone to the doctor a long time ago,” she said.

The Independenthas contacted Reese for comment

Ni untuk sesiapa kalau in the future suspek ada cyst ke, fibroid ke.....

If ada extra seratus dua dalam bank, boleh bypass waiting time kat KK and later GH by going to klinik swasta untuk ultrasound, lepas tu minta referral untuk terus ke pakar kat GH. Jadinya surgery tu buat kat GH maka murahlah kos nya vs kat hospital swasta makan ribu2. Dan taklah kena tunggu berbulan2 nak dapat jumpa pakar kat GH.

Teringat sepupu aku dulu, semua benda nak pantang, even  air pun level air suam jer dah kira air sejuk.

Oneday dia ngadu sakit perut, perut mcm bengkak or membusung sikit. Tp takut nak gi spital. So bawak gi urut. Tp tukang urut pun surrender sebab rasa mcm ada ketulan so advised her gi spital jer lah.

Nah kat spital terus detect cyst pecah. Mlm tu terus operation n sedut fluids.byk jugak lah kena sedut..

Mmg scary lah. N spupu aku puas aku bebel lepas dh sihat tu. X yah nak pantang2 sangat lah. Mkn jer apa yg ada janji control asupan. Voz knowing her dari kecik.. semua benda nak control mkn.
