Sengat Rooney

2011/04/08

United akhiri kemarau tewaskan Chelsea

ayat merah -  mengharap penalti je kew utk menang....

United menuju kejuaraan treble

BERBATOV meraikan kejayaannya menjaringkan gol pertama bersama Patrice Evra ketika menentang Fulham kelmarin.

-AFP

09/04/2011 16:51, Report by Nick Coppack
United 2 Fulham 0

Unitedmay not have always played like champions on Saturday, but the Redstook another step towards a record 19th league title with a comfortable2-0 win over Fulham at Old Trafford.
Of course, eachstep at this stage of the season must feel like a giant stride to thoseteams trailing Sir Alex's men. Matches are running out for the chasingpack to haul in a United side determined to land a historic piece ofsilverware. the At the final whistle, United (with only six games toplay) were 10 points clear of Arsenal, 11 clear of Chelsea and 13 aheadof neighbours Manchester City.
On an Old Trafford pitch bathed insunshine, the Reds outclassed Fulham and, but for a nervy opening 10minutes, rarely looked troubled. Even the visitors seemed to take theirfoot off the gas in the second half and for long periods it felt morelike a training game than a competitive fixture. It was as if Fulham, who came into the match having won just once in their 18 previous tripsto M16, never seriously believed they'd buck the trend.
Thatsaid, the Cottagers did start brightly. Gael Kakuta, on loan fromChelsea, stretched Tomasz Kuszczak within 45 seconds. Moussa Dembelethen did the same with barely six minutes on the clock, while BobbyZamora blasted wide after finding space inside the area.
Perhapsthe raft of changes Sir Alex made to his starting XI played its part inUnited's slow start. With one eye on Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final second leg, the boss rested eight playerswho'd started at Stamford Bridge three days earlier. Only Patrice Evra,Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia survived.
Around them, therewere rare starts for Tomasz Kuszczak and Darron Gibson, while PaulScholes returned from suspension and John O'Shea and Anderson frominjury.
Chris Smalling, in action for the first time against hisformer club since his move to Old Trafford last summer, looked everyinch a distinguished defender.  He tackled fearlessly, passed assuredlyand won the majority of his aerial duels in both penalty areas.
Ofcourse, there was no Wayne Rooney for Manchester United as the strikerserved the first of his two-game domestic suspension after beingcharged by the Football Association for using “offensive, abusiveand/or insulting language” in the Reds' 4-2 win over West Ham lastweekend.
In Rooney's absence, Dimitar Berbatov led the line inwhat was only his third start in United's last 12 fixtures.  And it wasthe Bulgarian who shook the Reds out of their early slumber, firingUnited into the lead on 12 minutes.
Nani must be credited formuch of its invention, the Portuguese jinking past a number of would-beFulham tacklers and playing a neat one-two with Anderson before layingthe ball off to Berbatov on his left to finish with a cool side-footted shot into the far corner.
Fulham'searly bluster disappeared completely. For the rest of the half, thehome side was comfortable in possession and carved out regular chances.Anderson wasted the best of those the Reds failed to convert, screwinghis shot wide on 19 minutes, while Valencia and Nani caused havoc onthe flanks.
Those two combined just after 30 minutes to doubleUnited's lead. Nani reached a long ball ahead of Schwarzer, rounded theAustralian goalkeeper and homed in on goal. Fulham's Aaron Hughes didenough to divert Nani's shot sufficiently away from goal, but it spunstraight to Antonio Valencia, who nodded in at the far post from closerange.
Anderson and Gibson drew saves from Schwarzer at the startof the second half, while Fulham substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen curled aneffort just past the post that had the visiting fans celebrating as ifhe'd scored. It took them a good 10 seconds to realise the ball hadactually passed the wrong side of the post.
Zamora then wentclose with a free-kick on 72 minutes, but it was a rare moment ofgenuine tension in a 45 minutes that will be forgotten as quickly as itbegan. United, too, were sluggish, doing just enough to hold onto thelead. It was understandable, though: the game was won, the points inthe bag. Why waste energy?
O'Shea hit the target from distance and substitute Michael Owenwriggled into the penalty area late on, but in the end the Reds'first-half exertions were enough to earn three points.
Players, fans, even Sir Alex Ferguson, enjoyed a brief moment of celebration atthe final whistle. After all, with just six games to play and a10-point lead, the Reds' title chances look good.
But almost asquickly as the roar went up it subsided and thoughts turned immediatelyto Chelsea's visit on Tuesday night. That should provide a sterner test.

Boss pleased with the points

SirAlex Ferguson was pleased with the result if not the performance afterManchester United’s 2-0 victory against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.
Boththe Reds’ goals – one from Dimitar Berbatov, one from Antonio Valencia– came in an entertaining first half, but the second period lackeddrama as both teams took their foot off the gas.
“We were a bitcasual and lackadaisical in all departments of the team, apart from ourtwo centre-backs who were very good,” Sir Alex said. “In the first halfthere was some very good football and we could maybe have scored acouple more. But in the second half we became wasteful in ourpossession.
“We could have suffered because of that and onanother day we may have done. But we got through it and that’simportant. At this stage of the season winning is the name of the game.
Threepoints was always going to be the aim against a Fulham side with theworst away record in the league. Even so, the visitors were nopushovers and actually started the game brightest.
“If you lookat their team they very seldom make changes. It’s normally the same XIevery week – that gives them consistency and organisation and they canbe hard to break down.”
In the end, United’s two goals wereenough to seal victory and send United 10 points clear of nearestrivals Arsenal. Just as pleasing for the manager, however, was thenumber of players he now has at his disposal as the Reds chase glory in three different competitions.
Indeed,Sir Alex made eight changes for the game against Fulham and will nodoubt shuffle his pack again for Tuesday’s Champions League clash withChelsea.
“I have to trust the squad,” he said. “Anderson needed agame, Berbatov needed a game, Scholesy needed a game, John O’Sheaneeded a game badly – he’s been out with a hamstring injury and he’scome through well.
“When you know the players and you’re playingat home, no matter what team you put out you expect something fromthem. I think I picked the right team to win today.
“Players arecoming back. Wes Brown’s back, Rafael should be okay for Tuesday.Valencia’s back… that gives us a heck of a boost.”
