Dimitar Berbatov faces knee surgery
Sir Alex Ferguson's frustration at Manchester United failing to regain top spot in the Barclays Premier League has been compounded by the news striker Dimitar Berbatov may need exploratory knee surgery.
Berbatov was unable to play any part in United's 1-1 draw with Birmingham at St Andrew's as they were unable to achieve the victory which would have taken them above Chelsea.
Instead Ferguson gave a debut to summer signing Mame Biram Diouf who came on as a second half substitute.
Ferguson said: "Dimitar wanted to play with it but we felt we should try to get it (the knee) sorted and get him fit again.
"He may have to have an exploratory operation."
An operation could keep him out for up to three months.
Last month, Ferguson attempted to quell fears over the Bulgarian's fitness, saying United could nurse him through the season without resorting to surgery.

Manchester United Set For £80 Million Summer Clear-Out – Report
Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly ready for a busy summer, with the Sunday Mirror claiming that Manchester United are set for an end of season clear-out as they seek to rebuild their squad.
The Red Devils are enduring an inconsistent season, having lost five times in the Premier League already and having been dumped out of the FA Cup in the third round by League One side Leeds United.
This may prompt Ferguson into something of a fire-sale at the end of the season with the Sunday Mirror claiming Dimitar Berbatov, Anderson , Nani and Zoran Tosic will all be sold, along with Nemanja Vidic.
The tabloid quotes a “United insider” as insisting that Berbatov’s future at the club, in particular, was in jeopardy: “The four midfield players got a lot of criticism after the Leeds [United] game, but the biggest underperformer was [Dimitar] Berbatov.
“People say he’s got a great touch, and that isn’t in doubt, but this game is also about hunger and workrate.
“To put it bluntly, Berbatov doesn’t run around enough for this United team - and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by the people that matter most.” |

DIMITAR BERBATOV'S Manchester United career is in jeopardy as the striker battles a crisis of confidence.
Even Sir Alex Ferguson, one of his greatest supporters, is losing faith with the £30million Bulgarian, who has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since joining from Tottenham 18 months ago.
Berbatov has become a target for United fans, which has led to him shrinking even further into his shell.
That has left huge doubts over his future at the club, with manager Ferguson struggling to understand why such a talented player cannot cope with the demands of United.
A source close to Ferguson said: "Berbatov is a real puzzle and a problem. He's so lacking in confidence that it's almost as if he's scared to go out and express himself.
"On the big occasions, somebody like Wayne Rooney grows in stature, but Berbatov hides away. He just seems to shrink.
"He should have everything it takes to succeed and Fergie certainly believed in him, but it's just not working out."
Ferguson will now consider cashing in on Berbatov in the summer to raise funds to make another move for Karim Benzema.
The French striker was a United target last summer but joined Real Madrid for £45m. But he has hardly figured at the Bernabeu. |

BIRMINGHAM: Gelagat Sir Alex Ferguson, kelmarin sekadar memberi gambaran betapa dia mungkin terjebak sekali lagi dalam masalah dengan Persatuan Bola Sepak Inggeris (FA) selepas kecaman terbarunya ke atas pengadil.
Pengurus Manchester United itu berang dengan keputusan Mark Clattenburg menyingkirkan pemain tengah Scotland, Darren Fletcher pada saingan Liga Perdana Inggeris (EPL) yang berkesudahan seri 1-1 ketika menentang Birmingham City di gelanggang lawan, kelmarin.
Ferguson baru-baru ini menjalani penggantungan dua perlawanan tepi garisan kerana membidas kecergasan pengadil, Alan Wiley, awal bulan ini dan dia mempunyai hukuman tertangguh dua perlawanan ke atas dirinya daripada FA.
Tetapi ia tidak menghalangnya daripada terbabit dalam satu lagi kritikan terhadap pengadil terbaru dalam senarainya di St Andrews. Kemenangan dalam perlawanan itu harus membolehkan United menggantikan Chelsea di tangga teratas carta liga.
Fletcher disingkirkan kerana dua kad kuning, yang kedua bagi kekasaran ke atas penjaring gol Birmingham, Cameron Jerome tiga minit sebelum tamat selepas satu lagi aksi kurang bermaya anak buah Ferguson, hanya beberapa minggu selepas diaibkan dalam Piala FA apabila kecundang 0-1 kepada kelab tangga kedua, Leeds United.
Daripada menumpukan kepada kekurangan pemainnya, Ferguson memfokuskan serangan ke atas Clattenburg, dengan berkata: "Saya melihat dia mengadili perlawanan Arsenal menentang Spurs baru-baru ini dan seseorang diperlukan disingkirkan, dan dia melakukannya. Ia begitu lembut.
