Lee Byung Hun says public lip lock with ex-lover was wildest thing he did for love

He shocks with steamy kiss on street



FIFTEEN years ago in the streets of Seoul, a young man quarrelled with his girlfriend.

Then he grabbed her and planted a smouldering kiss on her lips.

Passers-by must have gawked in shock.

After all, Korea was a conservative society and any public display of affection would have been taboo back in the early '90s.

Meet Lee Byung Hun, one of Korea's most charismatic leading man, with a reputation for being the best kisser on screen.

The New Paper did an e-mail interview with him recently about his new romantic film, Once In A Summer, which opens here on Thursday.

In the film, he plays an eccentric old professor who tries to track down his first love (Soo Ae) after 40 years.

When asked about the wildest thing he did for love, Byung Hun, 37, described that kiss with an ex-girlfriend in 1992.

'You can't even imagine it if you know how it was like 15 years ago in Korea,' he wrote.

And he was already a TV actor then.

He was discovered in 1991 during an annual TV talent search, when he was still majoring in French Literature in Hanyang University.

HOLLYWOOD BREAK

How times have changed since.

Now hailed as Korean Heavenly King with a massive fan base in Japan and Singapore, Byung Hun is said to be the most promising Korean actor to break into Hollywood this year.

When asked about his Hollywood plans, Byung Hun, who is fluent in English, wrote that he is considering some offers, but 'nothing is confirmed yet'.

Earlier, he had told The Korea Herald that he has yet to find a suitable role, and he had turned down two offers to play Asia's James Bond.

'I don't want to debut as another Asian actor who does some martial art. I want to play an independent role on an equal footing with other American actors in a Hollywood film,' he said.



In the meantime, Byung Hun has been busy promoting his latest project, Once In A Summer, which co-stars demure actress Soo Ae.

The story unfolds in flashback format, which means Byung Hun plays both the young student and the old professor.

LOOKING OLDER

Playing an old man was a first for him. It was difficult to add years to his face with special makeup and still make it look natural.

They tried a mask at first, then decided to apply the makeup directly on his face.

'I've never imagined what I would look like when I get older, but the staff told me that it was a bit frightening,' he wrote.

He also injected his ideas into the script, like suggesting the scene where two young lovers just stare quietly at each other, after watching a movie alone in a room.

He added: 'I'm so curious, I always enjoy doing something new.'

But, despite good reviews from the media, Once In A Summer sold a measly 300,000 tickets - a flop by Korean standards.

You'd think someone of his stature would feel immense pressure to deliver big box-office figures, but he remained upbeat.

'Nobody can predict the result of the movie before the shooting. They can only hope it will be successful...' he wrote.

'I just want to share with the audience the result of all my efforts. I will be happy if they love it, but I don't think it's right for me to choose the movie only for its potential success.'

Aish... masa tu orang tengah hangat bercinta ... umur pun baru 22 tahun, tengah in love... siap dengan lovers' quarrel lagi.  Kalau tak silap katt punya memory... the ex-girl tu most probably senior dia masa di university dulu. Tapi tak lama... lepas tu they all break up.

From my observation, dia memang 'all out' kalau he's in love ...
