Wenger: Shevchenko's Not A Bad Back Up
Arsene Wenger doesn't believe Chelsea will be too hampered by the absence of Didier Drogba on Sunday, because Andriy Shevchenko is a terrific replacement.
Arsenal welcome a Didier Drogba-less Chelsea to the Emirates on Sunday for an important Premier League match.
The Blues' Ivorian striker underwent knee surgery last weekend, keeping him out of action for a month, and although Wenger admits to being a big fan of the 33-goal forward, he's positive that Chelsea won't miss him too much.
Drogba vs. Shevchenko
The reason for that is Andriy Shevchenko, whom Wenger also holds in high regard. "Drogba is a fighter and until the last second in every game he fights," explained the Gunners boss.
"I admired him especially in the FA Cup final last year, where he had not the best of games but in the end he never gave up and made the difference.
"I personally rate Drogba because he always gave us a hard time and most of the time he was very influential, but, when you can replace him with Shevchenko you are not in too much misery."
The Ukrainian has had an indifferent spell at Stamford Bridge, but found the net against Sunderland last weekend and will be looking to repeat the feat at the Emirates on Sunday.
Grand Slam Sunday
Speaking of the big game, Wenger acknowledged its importance, believing it will help shape one of the most interesting title races in years. "We have a good opportunity to strengthen our lead again because at least one of Liverpool and Man United will drop points, maybe both," he said.
"For us victory would put us in a very strong position again." Arsenal lost at Middlesbrough last time out, but still hold a one-point advantage over chasing Manchester United. Defeat at home to Chelsea would see the Blues pull level with the Gunners, while Liverpool also remain in the running. |
