Siti's wedding do a bigger draw

KUALA LUMPUR: TV3 has emerged the "winner" in one of the hottest battles for viewership. The "live" screening of the fairy-tale wedding reception of (Datin) Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin and Datuk Khalid Mohamad Jiwa on Monday night attracted 6.3 million viewers ? 1.6 million more than the number of viewers who had tuned in for the "Mawi... Ina" special on RTM1 and Astro Ria.
The continuing saga of the now-soured relationship of Akademi Fantasia 3 champ Asmawi Ani (Mawi) and ex-fiancee Noordiana Md Naim failed to beat the allure of the pop princess and her prince charming as the programme was only watched by a total of 4.7 million viewers.
The "Mawi... Ina" special from the Putrajaya Holdings auditorium was aired "live" by both RTM1 and Astro Ria as well as Astro? @15, channel.
The figures were based on the overnight ratings released by AGB Nielsen Media Research Malaysia ? an independent body which provides television audience measurement service.
AGB Nielsen managing director Danyal Abdul Malik said the figures represented viewers who watched the shows for at least 15 minutes.
TV3 also did itself proud when the "live" telecast of the wedding reception from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) was watched by 4.3 million viewers at its peak.
Media Prima Berhad? corporate communications television networks general manager Eliza Mohamed said the station had worked hard over the last three weeks to provide fans with the latest news on Siti? wedding.
"We?e always been particular about the quality of our content. We made sure everything was well-planned so we could fulfil our viewers? expectations."
Meanwhile, Astro? senior director (television) Zainir Aminullah said: "After ?awi ... Ina?, our chat channel, @15, witnessed a surge in the speed and volume of interactive messages."
In addition, said Zainir, a number of people had called ERA, Astro? flagship Malay radio station, to express their views about the show.
The battle of the TV stations began when RTM and Astro decided to team up and air the "Mawi... Ina" special in the same time slot as Siti and Khalid? wedding reception.
Mawi and Noordiana were expected to draw the viewership as they were meeting for the first time after their break-up.
TV3 had obtained the rights to air Siti? wedding ceremonies ? the akad nikah on Aug 21, Monday night? glitzy reception as well as the Sept 3 reception in Siti? hometown of Kuala Lipis ? for a purported sum of RM1 million.
