The news doing the rounds was that Akshay Kumar’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again and Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express would give each other tough competition at the box office this Eid. The films will release on the same day. But Akshay steers clear of any controversy. He says that neither is threatened by the other and that both will get good space and survive together.
“I see it positively. Eid is such a big day that it can accommodate both films. There is nothing to think about,” says Akshay at the trailer launch of Once Upon… at Film City on Wednesday.
The trailer has portions on betting in cricket, which gave lead the media to question if it was connected in any way to the present spot-fixing controversy that has shaken the cricketing circles. “He is just a character in a film. Please don’t connect it to anything else. You should see it as a film, nothing else,” says Akshay.
To ensure that everyone at the launch experienced the backdrop of the film, the makers had the trailer launch on a huge set that comprised a police station, cinema hall and a three-storey residential building amid shops. A restaurant that was also recreated had torn posters of Mother India (1957) and Sunghursh (1968) as upcoming films on the walls.
No talk time
Akshay Kumar will speak about the ill effects of using cell phones for long hours and request audiences at PVR multiplexes to restrict usage. Akshay will don his Once Upon... look in the special clip directed by Milan Luthria. “Shoaib’s message is to remind viewers to abstain from using their mobile phones. The manner of its delivery is suave yet menacing, much like my character in the film,” says Akshay. The clip, which is out today (May 31), will run till the release of the film.

There’s always been that one odd hero from the Tamil or Telugu film industry in Bollywood every now and then, but never have there been so many, until now. This seems to be the year of debuts for Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam male actors in the Hindi film industry. While Malayalam actor Prithviraj, 31, made his Bollywood debut last October in Aiyyaa, alongside Rani Mukerji, it’s only with his recent release, Aurangzeb, that his arrival has been acknowledged.
This month will see Chennai’s heartthrob Rajinikanth’s son-in-law Dhanush, 31, and Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan, 28, strike Bollywood with Raanjhanaa and the remake of the 1973 hit Zanjeer, respectively.
And, by the end of this year, popular Telugu actor Mahesh Babu, 38, will be seen in the yet-to-be-named project by the Go Goa Gone director duo, Krishna DK-Raj Nidimoru.
Ad-man and image consultant Prahlad Kakkar feels that all of these men have a fair possibility to woo Hindi cinema audiences. “Actors from the regional films are no more those paunchy, moustached heroes. These new breed of men are all good-looking, smart, and have everything it takes to cut a niche and survive in Bollywood,” says Kakkar.
He adds, “Mahesh Babu and Ram Charan are both handsome fellows and brilliant actors, so there’s no reason that they won’t be accepted here. Dhanush is a wonderful actor too and he tends to grow on you, so he’ll certainly be popular among the masses.” Agrees industry analyst Atul Mohan, “Nothing creates more impact than a good story and good actors. All these men are top notch actors, and both Raanjhanaa and Deewar have great storylines too, so I’m sure the audience will love them. Prithviraj has done an excellent job in Aurangzeb so he’s here to stay. And for Dhanush of course, his Kolaveri Di fame is an added advantage,” says Mohan.
In the recent past, male actors from Tamil films who have made a mark in Bollywood include R Madhavan (3 Idiots) and Siddharth of the Rang De Basanti fame.
Prithviraj

Ram Charan
Just five films old, Chiranjeevi’s son is every teenager’s heartthrob in Andhra Pradesh. His films, Chirutha and Magadheera, are blockbusters.
Mahesh Babu
Twenty six films old, the Hyderabad-based actor started as a child artist in 1979. He’s currently the highest paid actor of Tollywood.
Dhanush
A National Film Award winning actor, a singer, lyricist and music producer, he won the world over with his chartbuster, Kolaveri Di, last year.
Shah Rukh Khan’s surgery pushes back Happy New Year shoot
Shah Rukh Khan was discharged on Wednesday (May 29) from the hospital after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. Now, it seems that the actor’s operation has apparently delayed the start of his next venture, Happy New Year (HNY). We have learnt that Farah Khan’s next was set to start rolling in June, but now it will hit the floors only in September.
“The plan was to start the HNY shoot with a couple of schedules in Mumbai before flying off to Dubai in September for the
subsequent ones. But since Shah Rukh will take about three months to recover completely, the Mumbai schedules have been
cancelled. He will directly start shooting in Dubai,” says an insider. Interestingly, Salman Khan too kicked off the shoot for his next, Mental, in the desert city.
SRK’s surgery was successful but, apparently, he will have to keep his arm in a sling for at least six weeks. After that, the star will begin the exercises required for his complete recovery. “In total, it will be around three months before he is absolutely fit, since the doctors have also advised him to rest. Until then, no one, including Farah, wants to take any chances with his health. That’s why they have decided to give him ample time to recover completely,” adds the insider.
Despite repeated attempts, Farah and SRK remained unavailable for a comment. Shah Rukh, who is recuperating at home, also has post-production work left for his next Eid release, Chennai Express. “Once Shah Rukh starts work on HNY, you can expect him to continue working at a stretch again. In the meantime, he is making the most of his free time by spending it with his kids, Aryan and Suhana,” says the insider.
