Liverpool's online club shop has sold out of beach balls, and it'sbelieved Manchester United fans could be behind the

spending spree asthey plot to re-enact the farcical scene in Jose Reina's penalty area in Liverpool's loss to Sunderland on Saturday.

Anfieldstewards will be primed to keep the balls at bay during Sunday'scrucial match, where Liverpool will seek to avoid a

fifth straightdefeat at the hands of their rivals.

Within hours of Liverpool losing 1-0 at Sunderland last week courtesy of a goal deflected in via a beach ball thrown on tothe

pitch by a fan, the Liverpool club shop's entire stock of the inflatables had sold out after a rash of internet orders.

Otherthan traders, collectors, and perhaps the odd scout on the look-out fornew striking talent, its presumed United fans

are the most likelybuyers of the balls.

But even if some Liverpool supporters will be suppressing a sly smile at the absurdity of it all, the prospect of a fifthdefeat

in a row and fifth in 10 Premier League games is certainly no laughing matter.

It would mark Liverpool's worst run for more than half a century and leave them 10 points behind United and potentiallynine behind Chelsea, who host Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Mampukah Liverpool terus bertahan.

- REUTERS

Benitez takut hilang jawatan.

"Kami tahu keputusan perlawanan banyak mempengaruhi suasana bola sepak.
- Agensi

United can send Liverpool into crisis at Anfield in Sunday

Andrew Leci

Friday, October 23rd, 2009 06:38:00

THE last time Liverpool lost four games in a row, the year was 1987. Kenny Dalglish was the manager then, and the Anfield club boasted the prolific goal scoring talents of Ian Rush.
May 1986: Kenny Dalglish (left) and Ian Rush of Liverpool pose with the trophy after the FA Cup final against Everton

At the time, there were grumblings on Merseyside, but that’s about all. Fans weren’t calling for the head of the manager, demanding it on a sacrificial silver platter — the ultimate punishment for perceived failure and the ignominy to which supporters of the club had been subjected.
Sure, it was disappointing. Defeat at the hands of perennial underachievers of Tottenham Hotspur, and also in the final of the League Cup against Arsenal, when Rush’s record of never being on the losing side when scoring for Liverpool was finally broken after seven impressive years.
Two more defeats came at the hands of Norwich and Wimbledon. The Liverpool faithful at the time had been brought up on a diet of football played by teams created by Bill Shankly and his successor Bob Paisley.
Four defeats on the bounce was almost unthinkable for the supporters of a club that take their football very seriously indeed. Was Dalglish pilloried in the Press? Was he accused of being tactically inept?
Did the club’s board summon him to a meeting to deliver an ultimatum or, even worse, the universally dreaded and doom-harbinging "vote of confidence"? The answer to all the questions above is almost certainly, "no", although I’m sure passing words were exchanged in Anfield corridors.
The 1986-1987 wasn’t a successful season for the club, who finished second in the league behind city rivals Everton. To make matters worse, the talismanic Rush left for Juventus in the summer. But the rest, as they say, is history. Liverpool went on to win the league title the following season and then again in 1990 — their most recent success.
Now 22 years later Liverpool have again lost four games in a row, and Rafa Benitez couldn’t be under more pressure if he was scuba diving with enriched air nitrox, possibly around the "wreck" that some pundits are referring to as the current state of his managerial career.
How times have changed. While no one would fully exonerate Benitez for his part in Liverpool’s poor form of late, most rational people will aver that it can’t come solely down to the manager. If players don’t perform on the pitch, there is often little that a coach can do, and by their own admission, key personnel have not been cutting the mustard.
There is, of course, a chance for a degree of redemption this weekend as Liverpool host table-topping and pace-setting Manchester United at Anfield. It is arguably the most important game in the club’s season, and also, possibly, in Benitez’ tenure on Merseyside.
The result is not as important as the performance. While Liverpool will not want statisticians scratching their heads to discover when the club last lost five in a row, the major task ahead is one of restoring confidence.
Liverpool "doubled" United last season, winning 2-1 at Anfield and then humiliating the Red Devils at Old Trafford in a 4-1 win that very nearly qualified as a "rout". The latter win was against the odds, nothing if not surprising, and very nearly propelled the Anfield club towards the title.
Clashes between Liverpool and United are always significant and to be savoured. Sunday’s meeting though, has a razor-sharp edge, with a great deal more than a mere three points on the line.
Andrew Leci is an ESPN presenter and host of the weekly preview show, Football Forecast, every Friday at 8.00pm.

Johnson says he’s fit for Liverpool's clash with United
Friday, October 23rd, 2009 07:23:00

Glen Johnson

RIGHTBACK Glen Johnson has declared himself fit for Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday but doubts remain over Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

The England international missed the midweek Champions League 2-1 defeat to Lyon with a groin injury — the same problem that sidelined Torres and that led to Gerrard’s withdrawal in the first half.

However, Johnson has revealed he will be available to tackle the champions and he also expects Torres to line up alongside him for the huge match where Liverpool must win to keep them still very much in the title race.

“The injury is a lot better, I will be all right for Sunday,” said Johnson, who is one of the most consistent Liverpool players thus far this season and useful in both defence and attack.

“We did not test it in training, just soft tissue work and massage, but it seems a lot freer than it did on Tuesday. I think Torres might be alright for Sunday, but I am not too sure about Gerrard.”

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said Gerrard is suffering from the same injury he has had before and Torres will be working hard with the physios.

Benitez finally had something to be pleased about after midfielder Alberto Aquilani made his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt at Tranmere’s Prenton Park when he came on as a 75th minute substitute in the reserves’ 2-0 win over Sunderland on Wednesday.

Italian Aquilani was signed for £20 million in August but has been recovering from a knee operation ever since. He came through the run-out unscathed but is not being considered for a Premier League debut against United.

Kraft still keen on buying Liverpool

October 23, 2009

American businessman Robert Kraft has admitted he is still interested in buying Liverpool. The 68-year-old tried to purchase the Anfield club in 2005 but lost out to fellow Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who have since endured a troubled tenure.

Robert Kraft owns the New England Patriots.

Kraft, who owns the NFL franchise the New England Patriots, tempered any notion he could be tempted into taking the club off their hands, however, admitting he harbours reservations about the lack of a salary cap in the Premier League.
Asked if he was still interested in buying the Reds, Kraft said: "Yeah, in the right situation. I love the game.
"I've said this before - I love competing with fair management - how well I can manage against you. [But] I don't like losing and at some point it's not economic, people just throwing money at it.
"I wanted to do the deal up there but in the end we only go into business ventures where we think we can compete at a high level. Because we like winning, and we like to win consistently."
Kraft has enjoyed success since buying the Patriots in the mid-1990s, following which they have claimed their three Super Bowl successes in 2001, 2003 and 2004.
He is due to arrive in London on Friday night ahead of their match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley this weekend - the third time the NFL has played a regular season game in the United Kingdom.
And Kraft believes the idea of a Premier League's 39th game would be successful in his homeland.
"We draw 50-60,000 people when we have teams playing an exhibition game," he added. "That would be smart. That's the sport of the world. And this is the best media market in the world."

Pennant accuses Rafa of 'restricting' LiverpoolBy Soccernet staff

October 23, 2009

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has blamed Rafael Benitez's restrictive managerial style for hampering the Reds' bid to win the Premier League title.

GettyImages
Pennant: Felt restricted by Benitez

Pennant, who left Anfield to join Real Zaragoza in the summer, believes the Spaniard's cautious tactics have resulted in a number of high-profile signings failing to recreate their best form at Liverpool.
"I don't see how a player can play at an average team and be great and go to Liverpool and be not as great," Pennant told the Guardian. "Liverpool have had some great strikers come and go - Robbie Keane is scoring goals at Tottenham, Peter Crouch is scoring now. It didn't happen at Liverpool: it must be about how the manager relates to players, how the tactics are and how he restricts players. The coach plays a big part when you arrive at a new team. If he restricts you, it's going to make you play differently."
Liverpool have already lost four times in the Premier League this season, are on their worst run of form in 22 years across all competitions and arch-rivals Manchester United visit Anfield on Sunday looking to heap further misery on Benitez. Defeat to the reigning champions would leave Liverpool 10 points behind the Premier League leaders.
And Pennant, who played for Liverpool for three seasons following a £6.7 million move from Birmingham City, believes that it is Benitez's negative tactics that are hindering the club's creativity and ability to consistently challenge for top honours.
"He's a great manager and there are times when he is a genius but sometimes his approach can take the best out of you," said Pennant. "Liverpool are a great side but they need to let loose and express themselves a bit. Look at Barcelona - you don't see them restricted, you see them breaking all sorts of shackles and they win things. Maybe if Liverpool went that way a bit they would be even better."
Liverpool's disappointing defeat to Lyon in the Champions League on Tuesday was followed by a public vote of confidence by the club's US owners but Benitez is enduring his most troublesome spell at Anfield since joining in the summer of 2004.

Gillett publicly backs RafaBy Soccernet staff

October 22, 2009

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett remains fully behind manager Rafael Benitez, claiming the Spaniard is "absolutely as good as there is in the business''.

GettyImages
Under pressure: Rafa Benitez

• "Reds need takeover to compete" • Mascherano calls on improvement
• Benitez remains defiant
• United fans prepare beach assault
The Reds' hopes of advancing from their Champions League group were severely dented by Tuesday's 2-1 home reverse to Lyon - their fourth consecutive defeat - while Benitez's decision to substitute Yossi Benayoun was booed by a segment of the Anfield faithful.
But Gillett insists the former Valencia boss still has his full backing. "We have just entered into a long-term agreement with Rafa,'' he said, recalling the improved deal Benitez signed in March to keep him on Merseyside until 2014.
While public displays of support for managers - the 'dreaded vote of confidence' - can often be a sure sign there is a sacking around the corner, Gillett seemed at pains to align himself wholy with Benitez.
"Our family is extraordinarily pleased with him, we believe he is absolutely as good as there is in the business," he said. "The run of results disappoints everybody. Certainly, it disappoints the fans and it disappoints Rafa. I have seen his television interview and I know he is disappointed. We are all disappointed, but we are in this together.''
