Kim Jeong-hwa "Made my decision based on loyalty to Kim Seon-ah"

Kim Jeong-hwa, who was the last to join the cast of MBC "When It's At Night", revealed that she decided to join because of her loyalty to Kim Seon-ah and Director Son Hyeong-seok.

She joined filming late last month. She said, "It was very last-minute, but I took it positively, and looking over the synopsis, I realized the character was fun".

Kim Jeong-hwa has always showed her close relationship with Kim Seon-ah, and she has worked with Director Son on the cable drama "The Devil that Drinks Wine".

Kim Jeong-hwa plays sly Wang Joo-hyeon, who enters the cultural bureau with the thought of finding a potential husband who will succeed as a high government official. She and Kim Seon-ah compete for Lee Dong-geon. Lee Soo-kyeong and Park Ji-yoon were cast in this role but did not go through with it.

Kim Jeong-hwa explained, "Wang Joo-hyeon is an innocent character. She is completely different from me but we have something in common. We say anything without thinking but that becomes the topic of conversation".

She continued, "Kim Jeong-hwa is calm, but Wang Joo-hyeon is careless, Wang Joo-hyeon doesn't have scars, but Kim Jeong-hwa has a deep scar". She revealed the scars she received from debuting at a young age and experiencing the world early.

The drama allows us to rediscover the worth and importance of our culture, and the romantic comedy "When It's At Night" will first air on the 23rd.

Kang Ta and Yang Dong-geun to Star in Military Musical

Former H.O.T. member Kang Ta and rapper/actor Yang Dong-geun will star in a musical celebrating the 60th anniversary of Korean military. The two singers have started their military duty in April and May, respectively.

The 60th anniversary musical is overseen by the Ministry of National Defense and produced by noted musical producers and staff members. The production team selected Kang Ta in a military-wide audition. The Defense Ministry insiders said that over 300 soldiers showed up for the audition and the final 35 were selected for various parts. However, it has not been decided which roles these star wannabes and Kang Ta will play.

On the other hand, Yang was not able to attend the audition because of his training, but he was included in the cast after he informed the producer that he wanted to take part in the musical as well. Yang has not been assigned a role, either. A production team member said the female lead will probably be played by a musical actress or a singer.

The musical is about conflicts and reconciliation between a father, who抯 in the military, and his free-spirited son. Practice will start in July and the performance is scheduled for October.

[Interview] Han Ji-min, who finished filming 'Yi San', "I wouldn't love a real king"

MBC historical drama "Yi San", which has been a top drama for nine months, has two episodes left from its total 77 episodes. Han Ji-min, who played Seong Song-yeon, the woman that the king loved, matured as an actress through this drama.

Song-yeon, who became a royal concubine, left the world on the 2nd by a disease, and made Yi San and all the viewers sad. The viewers' board overflowed with messages like "Please revive Song-yeon" and "If Song-yeon dies, what pleasure is there in watching?" It's because they were empathizing with the character of Song-yeon.

During the press conference, Director Lee Byeong-hoon said that Han Ji-min was "a bright actress with a clean appearance". Her small body frame incites men to protect her, her soft and pretty face, and the tears that flow from her sad eyes are still in viewers' memories. We had a phone interview with Han Ji-min as she was moving to her last filming on the 7th.

- You're filming even though Song-yeon is dead?
- Although she is dead, she comes out for a bit in Jeong-jo's imagination. If it's a scene of a memory, we can use a scene filmed before, but it's a fantastical scene where Jeong-jo meets Song-yeon, so we have to film it again.

- Thoughts on ending the drama
- For any work, there is meaning. When one work is done, I feel like I've climbed a mountain. But "Yi San" was a long drama, so it's on a bigger scale. In other words, it was a large mountain. It was a bigger role than in "Dae Jang Geum" and I was overwhelmed, but I was able to climb over the mountain because there were many seniors helping me. Just looking at the acting of my seniors taught me a lot.

- Was there anything difficult.
- There wasn't anything too difficult in the beginning as an artist. The speech wasn't historical so it was comparatively easy. But after entering the palace, I became a concubine, changed my speech, had a baby who died from a disease, and had my second baby die while pregnant. Acting out the change of mind in a short time was very hard. It wasn't easy to act out the aging process as a woman and the maturing process as a person. At these times, I was able to overcome the hardships with help and advice from Kyeon Miri.

- There was an article that you fainted while filming.
- In the beginning, my body wasn't well. But rather than fainting, I was just unable to film. During the later parts, I had only a few scenes, so I had a lot of time to rest. Now, I'm in great condition. Lee Seo-jin would have had it harder, who had to film on set two days, and film outside two to three days a week.

- How was filming the scenes up to your death?
- It was a little after resting due to the strike of actors' labor union, so my voice was extremely lively. My voice wasn't like a sick person's, so that day, I didn't sleep and stayed up wide awake. So automatically, I had dark circles and my voice was a little closed.

- The romance between Jeong-jo and Song-yeon was another fun part of "Yi San". Tell us your thoughts about romance scenes.
- There are people who ask me if I wasn't disappointed because the romance scenes were cut off in the middle. But looking at the drama as a whole, I think it's proper that a majority of it is about the political reformation against his opponents after he becomes king. At first, it was also awkward to call Yi San 'king'. When Song-yeon was in pitiful situations, it was hard for me too. In that sense, it came naturally. As I thought about how to express the love I've felt since he was a prince, time flew by. The romance between Yi San and Song-yeon was passionate, and it was almost like present-day dramas. To Jeong-jo, who faced the risk of poisoning and conspiracy, Song-yeon was like a place of refuge. Song-yeon's only love was Yi San. As Song-yeon, who knew of Dae-su's feelings, it was very unfortunate.

- The chemistry with senior actors.
- Lee Seo-jin jokes around a lot. But when we start shooting, he shows great levels of concentration. It's a little hateful. But he talks to me a lot about acting and takes care of me. But it is more comfortable to be with Lee Jong-soo than the king. It was comfortable to act with him. I also got a lot of advice from Kyeon Miri during the scene where I had to have the baby.

- If you were to really date a king.
- It's not very realistic. The queen loves her, and she gets pregnant the same time Hwa-bin, another concubine, does. There's nothing like that. In today's world, it's cheating. I was rather jealous. Before my character died, I wanted to go the grave of the real Song-yeon, but it was a private area, so I was able to go after my filming. Her grave was moved. Next to her grave is Hwa-bin's, and it was a strange feeling.

- Do you realize your popularity?
- I want to thank the viewers for the high ratings. I couldn't experience the public's reactions because I was busy filming. At the filming place in Yong-in, some elderly women called me 'Song-yeon'.

- How was it to be in the classical "Yi San" and be the MC for the modern "YunYeGa News"
- It wasn't an obstacle to the drama. Although YunYeGa News is not acting, it was a promise to them so I didn't give it up. Being the MC is very comfortable. I just need to show who I am.

- You seem very calm. Your real personality?
- I'm very optimistic. If I get into a hard situation, I argue that I learned a lot. I also like talking to my fans. There are many guys who ask me why I'm so tough when they meet me in person. I think my fans like the person I am on screen better.

- Resolutions and plans?
- I recognize genuine acting. I am happiest when I get this feeling. Acting that is lacking in genuineness is awkward and unnatural for me. I still lack many things but I will try to show genuine acting.

After this drama, I'm going to rest for a bit. I'm going to go to Australia with my parents to visit my sister. I haven't thought about the genre for my next work yet.

Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter 'Black House'

A meek but kind insurance salesman Jeon Jun-O (Hwang Jeong-Min, "Happiness") is handpicked by a creepy metalworker, Park Choong-Bae (Kang Shin-Il, "Silmido"), for renewal of the policies on the his family. Visiting Park's spectacularly decrepit adobe, Jun-O ends up discovering the body of Park's young son, apparently a suicide.

Meeting Choong-Bae's wife Yi-Hwa (Yu Sun, "The Wig"), a pale beauty who has seemingly exhausted her capacity for grief, Jun-O begins to suspect that the boy's death was in fact a murder, and that she is next in line.

What Jun-O does not understand is that his small act of kindness (and breach of professional ethics) over a phone consultation has already ensnared him in a web of deceit, mutilation and murder, spun by a psychopath who makes Norman Bates in "Psycho" look like SpongeBob SquarePants.

Stage actor with subtle charisma, Jeon Moo-song

His slow walk, humble fashion, gracious face and intellectual speech... His subtle charisma instantly disarms and infatuates people around him. Where does this ability come from? Here's the story of Jeon Moo-song, a veteran actor with a 40 year acting career.

Dream of sailor turns to acting

Jeon was born in Haeju, Hwanghae province in 1941 and was raised in Incheon, Gyeonggi province.
He played baseball in elementary school and the clarinet in a band in high school. But he fell in love with theater after watching Hamlet while in high school. He learned acting from the well known Mr. Yoo Chi-jin and debuted in 1964 in the traditional Korean play 'Chunhyang.' He was in the first graduation class of a drama center academy that was the predecessor of the Seoul Institute of the Arts. Well-known veteran actors such as Shin Gu, Lee Ho-jae and Ban Hyo-jeong were his school colleagues, and he's particularly close with Lee.

His childhood dream was to become a sailor as he spent his early years in the port city of Incheon. He believed as a child the ocean was the most splendid place to be. He wanted to join the Naval Academy but he failed the eyesight test. Fated or not, he instead went into acting. In retrospect, he did often go to the movies during his high school years when he attended the Incheon Electronic Technical High School. He was recognized for his talented acting in numerous plays including 'Death of a Salesman' and 'Waiting for Godot.' He is currently the art director of the Gyeonggi provincial drama company and focused on fostering junior talent.

His family his firm supporters

Jeon went through a great deal of suffering in the early years, which his wife also shared. In financial straits, she sold their piano and other precious wedding gifts to make ends meet. After 20 years of acting, Jeon shot his first film 'Mandara.' Financial difficulties began to ease as he started a career in broadcasting. And in 1981, when he was 40, he received the New Actor and the Best Supporting Actor awards at the Daejong film festival for his performance in Mandara. He soon became popular.

But whenever he made money on TV and in films he always went back to the stage. In 2005, he received the Lee Hae-rang drama award, usually given to producers and not actors. His suffering was only regarding finance. Hunger paled in comparison to the search for his inner heart. Maybe he has found the answer, as he now looks at ease on stage.

What he never let go in his busy acting life was his trust and love for his family. He says his family is his number one sponsor. Typically, stage actors tend to pay less attention to their families because they're extremely busy and use up all energy on stage. But Jeon is different. The actor--from head to toe--completely changes when he comes home. He is kind, responsible and still receives pocket money from his wife. He discusses the smallest problems with her and their children and respects their opinion. His son Jin-woo, a stage director, says he hasn't once been whipped or scolded by father, who respects his opinion at all time. All he said when his son and daughter also hoped to work in theater was, "If you're going to do it, do it well," which was as stern of advice as he ever gave. The tightly-knit family gathers and chitchats before a practice or rehearsal. The daughter takes her father's arm and still likes to play around.

A person before an actor

Jeon still bears in mind the advice his teacher Yoo gave him when he was young. He was told to become the dandelion seed of the drama world, and to above all first become a respectable person. While active on TV and the silver screen, Jeon does at least one or two stage productions every year. He asks himself if he has lived up to Yoo's request. He may find the answer through the staging of the Death of a Salesman prepared by the Gyeonggi provincial drama company. He played Willy Loman in the play for the first time in 1984 when he was in his 40s. He will again play the father character, this time while he is Willy's real age.

Anyone can try their hand at acting but to be remembered as a true actor is a tough call. A few awards can't fully reflect Jeon抯 delicate and sophisticated acting. To experience his stage presence may be the only way to reveal his true talent.

'Sikgaek' sets off on new culinary journey

The comic series was a hit. The movie version topped national charts. Will the "Sikgaek" drama get high viewer ratings?

Set to air this Tuesday night on SBS, this 24-episode drama is based on Hur Young-man's bestselling comic series of the same name. While the film version of the series, titled "Le Grand Chef," topped national charts last year, that doesn't guarantee the upcoming drama a free ride to the top.

With SBS melodramas "All In" (2003) and "Love Story in Harvard" (2004-2005) screenwriter Choi Wan-kyu orchestrating the plot of the TV version, what originally started out as a soulful exploration of the regional flavors of Korean cuisine in Hur Young-man's series may morph into a sappy and highly dramatic romance on the small screen.

Kwon Oh-jung (from left to right), Kim So-yun and Kim Rae-won in "Sikgaek" [SBS]

Judging from the 40-minute preview screening last week, SBS' "Sikgaek" promises to bring classic drama-making elements to audiences nationwide. Rivalry, love triangles and heritage all factor into this miniseries.

Glossy shots of Korean palace food, the rival chefs Seong-chan and Oh Bong-ju-- played by Kim Rae-won and Kwon Oh-jung respectively-- and the beautiful woman whom they long for, played by actress Kim So-yun, hinted at the potential soap opera to come.

But sequences featuring vast persimmon farms, cattle, and a crying child eating stew promised a different story, one that involved the heart of Korean cuisine: the story of the land itself and the people who harvested it.

While the original comic series revolved around a high-stakes competition between two rival chefs, its true focus was on Seong-chan, a top chef turned peddler.

Played by the heartthrob Kim Rae-won in the drama, he abandons the competition in the heat of the game, letting his rival, Bong-ju, beat him. This culinary genius who had come so close to winning throws it all away for life as a produce peddler. Scouring the countryside in search of the roots of Korean cuisine, Seong-chan comes to terms with himself and his talent.

And it was this journey through the heartland of Korea that made Hur Young-man's comic so appealing. One can only hope that the drama will take us on that delicious journey once again -- this time, in real living color.

Based on Kim Rae-won's comments at the press conference last week, it looks like the miniseries plans on focusing on Seong-chan's life as a produce vendor.

"I like driving around in a truck," said Kim, 27, referring to his experiences playing Seong-chan. "I think it is really fun."

Nam Sang-mi, 24, who plays a feisty journalist in the drama, added, "The whole experience, traveling around Korea, feels like a photo album."

Indeed, watching the co-stars Nam and Kim in the preview as they rough it out in the back of his truck, chowing down on ramen, makes the filming experience look like one great cross-country road trip.

But the real journey begins when "Sikgaek" airs on Tuesday night.

A special on the filming of "Sikgaek" airs tonight on SBS at 9:55 p.m. The first two episodes of the miniseries will play back to back tomorrow night at 9:55 p.m.

TVXQ's populatiry soars in Japan

TVXQ during Japan arena tour concert

TVXQ (also known as Tohoshinki in Japan), a five-member Korean boy band, is enjoying great popularity in Japan.

In May, the band completed a two-month arena concert tour across Japan, attracting more than 150,000 people. Tickets sold out almost immediately.

The arena tour is generally held at a concert hall that can accommodate 10,000 people. Given that the size of a concert hall is an important factor for the Japanese to judge a singer抯 star power, the band抯 success means a lot more than itself.

The group抯 16th album titled "Purple Line" ranked first in Japan抯 Oricon Weekly chart in January. Then in April the band also topped the most influential Japanese music chart with their 22nd record "Beautiful You." The Oricon Charts are based solely on the number of albums sold during the week.

It was just three years after the boy band debuted in Japan as singing their Korean hit in front of just 40 people.

Before them, the only non-Japanese musician to reach the top of the weekly chart was BoA. Last year, BoA became the first non-Japanese pop artists to have five albums topping the chart, when her fifth album "Made in Twenty," achieved the honor in April.

Put together by SM Entertainment, the group is composed of five members -- "Micky," "Hero," "Max," "You-Know," and "Xiah" -- specializing in the areas of dance, a cappella, acting and pop with an R&B vibe. Although the band was initially marketed as a cappella group, most of the group抯 music is mainstream K-pop.

Last year, the group became the first Asian band to win the Thailand Music Awards for both Best Music Video ("Rising Sun") and Favorite Asian Artist. They also won the Popular Vote Asia Artist award at the Virgin Hits Awards 2006 in Thailand.

Recent research conducted by Oricon shows that after the release of "Purple Line," the level of familiarity with the group among the Japanese rose up 6.8 percent to 68.8 percent.
