MH370 Loss An 'Accident' - All On Board 'Dead'

No trace of the aircraft has been found despite extensive searches
Malaysia has officially declared the loss of flight MH370 was an accident and all on board are dead.
"It is with the heaviest heart and deepest sorrow that we officially declare Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 an accident," said Malaysia's Department of Civil Aviation director-general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman in a pre-recorded broadcast on Malaysian television,
"We officially declare Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 an accident and that all 239 of the passengers and crew onboard are presumed to have lost their lives," he added.
The announcement was in accordance with international civil aviation rules said Mr Azharuddin, adding the declaration officially ends the search for the missing aircraft and would assist the families of those on board to apply for compensation.
Flight MH370 vanished on Saturday March 8 2014 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in China.
The aircraft is thought to have come down somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean though no trace of the plane, passengers or crew has been found despite extensive searches.

MH370: Malaysia officially declares disappearance of plane an accident

Malaysia has called off the search for survivors of missing flight MH370 and declared the disappearance of the plane in March 2014 an accident.
A statement by authorities in Kuala Lumpur said the underwater search for the wreckage of the plane would continue.
The declaration by Malaysia’s government clears the way for families to seek compensation payments and for Malaysia Airlines to make insurance claims, but is a heavy blow to relatives who have lived in torment for 10 months without knowing the fate of their loved ones.
The plane, with 239 passengers and crew on board, was en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur when it went missing. There has since been no trace of the plane, despite a vast search operation.
Authorities had originally planned to make the announcement in a hastily scheduled afternoon news conference, but abruptly cancelled the briefing after distraught next-of-kin rushed to the venue. Instead, the televised announcement was made by the transport ministry at 6pm local time.
The Malaysian government’s handling of the crisis has been severely criticised by relatives of the missing passengers and crew.
Several next-of-kin, some holding placards calling for the return of their family members, arrived at the briefing location in the headquarters of the Department of Civil Aviation, furious about not being briefed before the news conference.
“The most frustrating thing is that they [were planning] an announcement to the world first, then only to the next of kin,” said Wesley Walter, whose brother-in-law was on the flight.
“Why are the next of kin being treated this way?”

PETALING JAYA: China's foreign ministry has remarked on Malaysia's statement declaring the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 an accident.
Here is the statement in full:
Remarks by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Malaysia's statement declaring MH370 an accident
Since the incident of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 took place, the families of those on board, including 154 Chinese nationals, have been gripped by enormous anxiety and grief. Today, based on available satellite data of the aircraft and results of the search operation to date and in compliance with the provisions of the relevant international convention, Malaysia has declared MH370 an accident. At this moment of sadness, the Chinese government expresses its deep sorrow for the misery of those on board, and offers its profound sympathies and sincere condolences to their families.
In the wake of the incident, Malaysia has made important efforts in searching for the aircraft, conducting investigations and offering consolation to the families of the passengers. Australia and many other countries and international organisations have provided significant support and assistance to the search of the aircraft and other operations. China hereby expresses its deep appreciation and gratitude for all these efforts.
Since March 8, 2014, the entire Chinese nation has been deeply concerned about the fate of their fellow countrymen aboard MH370.
General Secretary Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and other Party and state leaders have given important instructions on numerous occasions to make sure that every possible effort is made to locate the aircraft. The Chinese government mobilised massive resources in this unprecedented search operation, including 21 satellites, 19 vessels,
13 aircraft and over 2,500 personnel and Chinese experts were dispatched to get deeply involved in the investigation. Consoling the families of MH370 passengers is another priority for the Chinese government. Officials at various levels have paid visits to the relatives of Chinese passengers. A reception office to help the families and local working groups has been set up under the inter-agency working platform. Thousands of government personnel and volunteers worked day and night to provide legal advice, medical aid, psychological counselling and other services to the families.
We know it must be extremely hard for the families to come to terms with the MH370 accident. We wish to assure the families of all the Chinese passengers that they are always on the mind of the Party and the government, who will be with them through these trying times. We hope the families will stay strong at this difficult moment and try to resume their normal life at an early date.
We call on the Malaysian side to act on the commitments made in the statement, fulfil its obligation of compensation, protect the lawful rights and interests of the families and provide them with support and assistance. We also call on the Malaysian side to remain fully committed to the search and investigation efforts and keep the families updated on the latest progress. The Chinese government will work closely with the governments of Malaysia and Australia, actively participate in the search and investigation efforts, provide the families with all necessary services and uphold their lawful rights and interests. |
