ahh
everything happen for a reason kata mat saleh
ye la tobacco company bayar tax, tinggi pulak tu
dgn terpaksa compete dgn rokok seludup lagi
dan sekarang ni vape pulak masuk kacau daun menyesakkan lagi dada tobacco company yg sudah semakin semput
dah la korang tak bayar cukai senang2 nak rampas market share kitaorang
menarik jugak tengok industri tobacco vs industri vape ni
dan bagaimana pula jika kerajaan memang berhasrat to ban vape completely regardless kesanggupan pengusaha2 vape utk membayar cukai ?
PETALING JAYA: A cloud of water vapour has descended upon the tobacco industry. High taxes, illicit trade, and now the growth in the use of electronic ciga-rettes – or vaping – has squeezed Malaysian tobacco companies into a tight corner. The companies are losing their grip on the smoking pop-ulation, and retail investors are pulling out of tobacco-related stocks.
Although e-cigarettes have been available in the country since 2009, vaping has seen a surge in popularity in the past year. Initially, it caught on as a means to quit cigarette smoking but more recently, it has become a recreational pursuit. “Vaping could possibly change how the tobacco indus-try works and it cannot overlook it. Judging by the efforts taken by some parties to dispel vaping as something negative, it really is a threat. However, the tobacco companies might not be ready to say anything about it yet until regulations are in place,” says an industry source.
“The tobacco players might also compare vaping to the shisha trend that was quite prevalent a few years ago but did not make a dent in sales. But they forget one thing – unlike shisha, vaping is meant to make you quit smoking,” he adds. British American Tobacco Malaysia Bhd’s (BAT Malaysia) shares have dropped 14% over the last year, corresponding with the vaping boom. While BAT Malaysia’s quar-terly financial report makes no mention of vaping, Philip Morris, which is not listed in Malaysia, has acknowledged its impact on the industry, which is already struggling with illicit trade and high taxes.
In fact, BAT Malaysia’s parent company, British American Tobacco (BAT) is said to be considering entering the vape market as part of its harm-re-duction initiative. It makes more sense to follow customers’ changing taste than to try and woo new smokers, says the source.“This is a potential money maker for tobacco companies, and at the same time it helps with their public image. Unlike illicit cigarettes, this can be turned into a positive for the industry,” he says. The problem is how does one enter a market that is not yet regulated? “For these companies to come to a decision [to enter the vape market], they need to quantify the competition, but they cannot do it as there are no official figures out there,” says TA Securities analyst Ahmad Faris.
Philip Morris Malaysian and Singapore managing director Goh Shea Lih acknowledges vaping as a safer alternative, but says it is too soon to decide on a business strategy. “We will need to study the regulations introduced by the government before we evaluate our business options. However, we commend the gov-ernment for taking the initiative to examine e-cigarettes.
“These products are used by a large number of consumers around the world and are con-sidered by many health experts as potentially a less harmful alternative to cigarettes. There-fore, we believe they should be appropriately regulated and restricted to use by adult smokers,” she says. This is an excerpt of an article first published in the Aug 29-Sept 4, 2015 issue of Focus Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20, 2015:
Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim (BN-Kuala Selangor) has suggested for the government to temporarily halt the importing of e-cigarettes, or vape, into the country. Irmohizam said more research was needed especially on the contents that was easily available.
Although the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that electronic cigarettes were not as dangerous as traditional cigarettes, the contents of nicotine in vape could not be questioned.
“Poison is poison and if vape is becoming a trend, it is feared that the public image of youth could be damaged because of vaping.
“Imagine if schoolchildren also start to vape and pretend to ‘smoke’.
“I am sure that we don’t want to see school students displaying acts like gangsters, when in fact electronic cigarettes are meant to help those who want to quit the smoking habit. “I urge that the government re-analyse all electronic cigarette devices and stop the import of vape to Malaysia,” he said when debating the Allied Health Professional’s Bill 2015 in Parliament today
