actually, the original maria clara is one of the main characters from the novel "noli me tangere ( touch me not)" by jose rizal, the national hero of the philippines way back in 1880's. it was a novel exposing the injustices of the spanish to the filipino people.
that's is how deep the maria clara name is to filipinos. it became the name to the national costume of women. its also a title of a drama now. hehe
