‘The Equator Man’ Criticized for Disturbing Scenes'
It’s getting the lowest ratings in its time slot, but KBS2’s The Equator Man is still gaining praise from its viewers. But recently, viewers pointed out that it’s gone overboard when it aired underage drinking and sashimi knives as weapons.
In the March 22 broadcast, the second episode, of The Equator Man, Sun Woo’s (Lee Hyun Woo, Uhm Tae Woong) father was killed by Yong Bae (Lee Won Jong).
Although the scenes were a bit gruesome, they were needed in order to show why the lead Sun Woo couldn’t help but walk the way of revenge.
Right after the broadcast, however, viewer forums were swamped with complaints that the underage drinking and sashimi knife scenes were too much.
One of the scenes in question appeared when Sun Woo met with Jang Il (Im Si Wan, Lee Joon Hyuk) to celebrate Jang Il’s acceptance to law school. Jang Il advises Sun Woo to “take the college entrance exam one more time in Seoul,” but Sun Woo drinks alcohol while answering, “I can’t go because of dad.”
The problem was that the characters were set to be below 19 years of age. According to the Teenager Protection Laws, which were revised in 2008, shops are banned from selling alcohol or tobacco to teenagers. The drama is set in the 90s, before the law was put in place, but many still stated that it was an inappropriate scene for the teenage viewers of today.
Many were also disturbed by the sashimi knife scenes. Choi Yoon Suk (Kang Ji Seop (Kang Gi Seabb)), who has a grudge against Jang Il, kidnapped Sun Woo and threatened, “Go see Jang Tegi (Jang Il). This knife isn’t registered, so just get it in deep enough so that he doesn’t die,” after which he threw a sashimi knife to Sun Woo.
Sun Woo then roamed the streets with the sashimi knife in his hand. Although the blade of the knife was wrapped in newspaper, viewers still said that the scene was inappropriate.
The decision to include the scenes was a choice made by the producers for the quality of the drama and for the set up of Sun Woo’s character, but it was fairly inappropriate for a drama airing in a public broadcasting company.
The day’s broadcast of The Equator Man rose 0.4 percent from its first episode to land on 8.1 percent (AGB Nielsen Media Research). Its competitor MBC’s The King 2Hearts recorded 16.5 percent, while SBS’ Rooftop Prince garnered 10.5 percent.

Shaman Witness to Murder in ‘Man from the Equator’
A witness to a murder incident has emerged in the latest KBS2 Wednesday-Thursday drama “Man from the Equator.”
On the March 22 episode, Choi Gwang-chun (Lee Jae-yong), a neighborhood shaman, tells the truth about the murder of Kim Gyeong-pil (Lee Dae-yeon), Seon-woo’s father, under the pretense of an exorcism.
Gwang-chun, drunk, falls asleep at a mountain and, when waking up, happens to see a man coming up with a sack. The man pulls out a body from the sack and hangs it on a tree to make it look like he committed suicide. Gwang-chun watches all this with horror and notices that the body is that of Gyeong-pil.
Gwang-chun suggests to Seon-woo the performing of an exorcism to comfort Gyeong-pil’s soul. He acts as if he was possessed by Gyeong-pil’s spirit during the exorcism and tries to let Seon-woo know how his father died. He says, “I am sorry that I couldn’t keep my promise with you. He killed me,” and faints. Seon-woo is surprised and wonders how Gwang-chun knows about the promise he and his father made.
Meanwhile, Gwang-chun also finds that the man at the mountain was Lee Yong-bae (Lee Won-jong), the father of Gwang-il, Seon-woo’s best friend. This signals turbulence and a twist in the two friends’ lives.
