Man charged with killing daughter sent for mental observation

KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed man, who was charged for the murder of his three-year-old daughter, has been ordered to be sent to the Bukit Padang Hospital for mental observation.

Magistrate Dayangku Marianah Mahmuddin made the order on Thursday for Freddy Marginim, 27, following an application by prosecuting officer Chief Insp Tan Hiap Wah under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Marginim was charged on Sept 1 before Magistrate Hurman Hussain while he was still warded at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here, where he was undergoing treatment for injuries to his neck.

However, no plea was taken from the Marginim who was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code that carries the death sentence on conviction.

Marginim is alleged to have murdered his daughter Diana Freddy at an unnumbered house in Kampung Pogunon in Penampang at about 11pm on August 17.

Dayangku Mariana set Oct 4 for mention of the case.

why use bomoh

DAILY EXPRESS NEWS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bomoh's help sought to locate crocodile
Kuching: Kampung Bako villagers have sought the help of a bomoh (medicine man) to locate a crocodile and the boy it is believed to have attacked at the mouth of the Sarawak River last Sunday.

Bomoh Cheek Inu of Gedong Wednesday set seven traps with monkeys and chicken as bait on the upper reaches of the river and visited the site of the attack.

"God willing, we'll get the crocodile in two days' time," he told reporters at the Kampung Bako jetty after setting the traps at 2pm.

Mohd Azuan Hatta, 12, was looking for crabs close to the river bank with his friend, Sulaiman Matsakini, 15, at 3.30pm when the crocodile lunged at him.

The search resumed Wednesday at 5.30am for Mohd Azuan, a Standard Six pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bako.

About 150 people, comprising villagers, Rela members, police, and Fire and Rescue Department, Sarawak Marine Department and Sarawak Forestry personnel, scoured the lower reaches of the river.

Head of Gita Police Station Sub-Inspector Samsudin Hassan said Kampung Bako Penghulu Suhaili Othman had advised the search team to steer clear of the upper reaches of the river where the traps had been set.

He said the search would be confined to the lower reaches of the river to prevent the sound of boat engines from driving the reptile away from the traps.

The people could wait at the jetty and would be summoned when their help was needed, he said. - Bernama

Ghostly reflections
Sim Kwang Yang
Sep 9, 06 12:42pm

As I said, this is the Month of the Hungry Ghost still. By a quirk of astronomical adjustment, we have two such months this year. The ghosts are still wandering around, before their return to Hell in about two weeks' time.

I remember the advice given to me many years ago by a wise Iban old man who knows a thing or two about the supernatural. Ghosts will not harm human beings, he says, especially in the name of race and religion. Only human beings can do great harm to their fellow human beings.

Ghost exhibition draws crowds and criticism

M. Jegathesan | Sep 15, 06 4:33pm

A rare exhibition of genies, ghosts and coffins is drawing huge crowds of Malaysians keen to catch a glimpse of the supernatural world, despite criticism that the spectacle is "un-Islamic".

Heart pounding and sweat beading on his forehead, businessman Ahmad Abdullah walked away from one spooky exhibit visibly shaken after being convinced he saw a spirit hovering above a once-used coffin and tombstone.

"This is my third visit," said Ahmad, who came to the Sultan Alam Shah museum to see mythical creatures including a "mermaid" supposedly captured in neighbouring Indonesia. "And I saw a white spirit in the dark enclosure."

The 30-year-old said the spirit, or "pochong" in the Malay language, appeared as a flimsy, white form in a glass room fitted with a coffin and a replica of a corpse that curators had created to lure the spirit to this world.

"We have to believe in the other world. Muslims believe in the existence of genies. They appears to us in human form," he told AFP.

Amzah said that in the past, the imp-like, malevolent creatures were used to steal money and other valuable items and also to cause deadly harm.

"The ghosts are now locked away and will not be able to harm anybody," he said, adding that when they were brought in, some of the mythical creatures exhibited gave off the smell of rotting flesh.

A major attraction at the exhibition is a metre-long (three-feet) mummified mermaid with dark hair, jutting teeth, scales on its brown body and the tail of a fish.

Another unnerving item on display is a "langsuir", Malaysia's version of a vampire, with a shock of coarse hair and a mouthful of jutting teeth. It is said here that a woman who dies in childbirth will turn into such a creature.
Black magic common

And a creepy half-woman, half-snake spirit known as a "nyai blorong" looks ready to leap from its shelf, creeping along on clawed bird-like hands, with a bony face and a lipless line of razor-sharp teeth.

Black magic used to be common in rural Malaysia, bred on myths and superstitions. It was used to gain power and wealth, and to harm enemies.

The practice reached its height during the sultanate days of the 16th century, but faded away as the influence of Islam grew in this multicultural nation.

But the lingering fascination with the supernatural has helped draw huge crowds to the exhibition which closes later this month. Authorities say some 300,000 people have visited since it opened in July.

Islamic scholar Safuan Abu Bakar, who owns many of the exhibits, insisted that they are real and just "another creation of god".

"It is not aimed at changing the values of the people. It is just about sharing and seeking knowledge. You need to have a strong will. There is no need to be afraid that anyone will lose their faith in god," he said.

"I am a religious teacher. It is my hobby to collect these paranormal items. It will help to instill strong spiritual feelings."

Critics however say the exhibition should never have been held as it goes against the tenets of Islam.

Nasarudin Mat Isa, deputy president of Malaysia's fundamentalist opposition Islamic Party, said the exhibition was "a waste of time".

"It does not add to knowledge. It is against Islam," he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Malaysia's culture, arts and heritage minister Rais Yatim said the government does not encourage exhibitions related to ghosts and spirits because there is no proof of their existence.

Hunt for 3 Indons believed to have murdered another Indon

MIRI: Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Nicholas Sebastian said police were hunting for three Indonesians believed to have murdered another Indonesian and injured his employer near Tanjong Kunjit in the lower Rejang River area.

Another Indonesian escaped the attack on Friday night by jumping into the river.

He then lodged a police report.

Police found the dead man, identified only as Kusno, who had his hands tied, inside an abandoned boat near a sawmill.

The 47-year-old employer sustained head injuries and a fractured arm.

His companion, 37, also suffered a fractured arm.

ACP Sebastian said the employer knew the three Indonesians whom he had picked up in the boat earlier.

?uring the journey, the three Indonesians turned aggressive and attacked the others with bottles.?

Police believe the motive of the crime was robbery.

Cops abuzz over MMS of naked police couple

ALOR STAR: A five-minute footage of two stark naked police couple is spreading like wildfire via the mobile telephone.

The footage showing a policeman and a policewoman fondling each other is believed to be taken about a week ago in a hotel room in Tandop, near here.

It is learnt that the policeman in his early 20s accidentally sent the clippings to a technician.

The technician, a policeman? son, allegedly forwarded the clipping to others in the police fraternity in Kedah.

Unable to stand the embarrassment, the 20-year-old policewoman, who joined the force about two months ago, took an overdose of painkillers and was admitted to the Alor Star Hospital on Thursday.

Kedah police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zuber Mohd Shariff said the matter was brought to his attention because the policewoman had apparently attempted suicide.

He said that he thought she took the painkillers because she was heartbroken over a failed love affair.

? was not told about any pornographic footage that is being spread through the MMS,? he said, adding that he would investigate the matter.

He said the policewoman, who is a general duty staff, had been discharged from the hospital and that she was now back in the police barracks.

ghosts captured on camcoder

It is quite hard to believe that ghosts of Sabah deemed to be those of the Greg Storm could be captured on video in Keningau.  If you want to believe that that is possible as it was run in TV3, then there is obvious a message in reality for that.  (DE 25 Sep 06)
