Champions League round-up
GROUP A
Ronaldinho netted on a comfortable night for Barcelona
Barcelona fired a five-goal warning to their Group A rivals as they cruised to an emphatic 5-0 win over Levski Sofia.
Andreas Iniesta opened the scoring in the seventh minute, then Ludovic Giuly doubled the lead before half-time.
Carles Puyol slammed in the third shortly after the break, Samuel Eto'o shot home a fourth, then Ronaldinho curled home the fifth in injury time.
The result makes them the early leaders of Group A, ahead of Chelsea, who saw off Werder Bremen 2-0.
GROUP B
Sporting Lisbon sprang the surprise of the night, as Marco Caneira scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Italian giants Inter Milan.
Caneira's beautiful strike flew past keeper Francesco Toldo, while Patrick Vieira was sent off in the second half on his Champions League debut for Inter.
Bayern Munich found it easier against Spartak Moscow, scoring four second half goals to win 4-0.
The German side toiled in the first half, but Claudio Pizarro's individual effort shortly after the break settled their nerves. Roque Santa Cruz, Bastian Schweinsteiger with a beauty and Hasan Salihamidzic netted further goals to seal a comfortable win.
GROUP C
None of the four teams in Group C were able to find a goal.
Galatasaray and Bordeaux played out an uninspiring goalless draw in Turkey.
Galatasaray had the better of an uneventful match, but could not find a way through a stubborn French defence.
Bordeaux's best chance came when midfielder Johan Micoud sent a shot just wide of Farid Mondragon's goal.
Liverpool hit the woodwork twice late on against PSV Eindhoven, but the Dutch side had chances too in another goalless draw.
GROUP D
Former Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes scored a hat-trick for Valencia as the Spanish side won 4-2 away at Olympiacos.
Michalis Konstantinou put Olympiacos ahead in the 28th minute, but Morientes scored in the 34th and 39th minute to put the Spanish side ahead.
Olympiacos levelled on 65 minutes through Nery Castillo, but Raul Albiol's 85th-minute drive restored Valencia's lead before Morientes' last-minute header sealed the win.
But Roma are top of the group after a 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk which was not quite as straightforward as the scoreline suggests.
The teams were locked together at 0-0 until Rodrigo Taddei opened the scoring on 66 minutes, then Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and David Pizarro weighed in to complete a comfortable-looking win. |
