CL Comment: The Luzhniki Pitch - Will It Give CSKA Moscow The Edge Over Inter?    Theartificial pitch at the Luzhniki Stadium is getting plenty of attentionahead of CSKA's clash with Inter - Goal.com takes a look at what impactit's likely to have...
Every time, without fail, that aninternational or major European club match is played at the LuzhnikiStadium in Moscow, questions relating to its artificial pitch are highon the agenda. The surface - a sixth generation synthetic turf - isunusual in top level football, and while its immaculate visage may givethe impression of a perfect grass pitch, players will insist that itdoesn’t play like one.

The two principal differences that tendto be highlighted between natural and artificial pitches are the bounceof the ball and the more onerous forces that the field transfers into aplayer’s legs. Players who are not used to the less forgiving surfaceoften complain of aching joints and muscles after games. "Whatever thequality of an artificial pitch," commented Alexander Yardoshvili, physio of Lokomotiv Moscow, "the pressure on the ligament structure isalways going to be greater than on grass. I can understand why some whohave had surgery on their knees are reluctant to play there."

MatthewFrost, the groundsman responsible for the installation of the naturalfield used for the 2008 Champions League final at the Luzhniki between Manchester United and Chelsea,is another critic: "Plastic pitches are unnatural and the gameshouldn't really be played on them," he claimed. "On natural turf, forexample, Russia against England would have been a different game. Lookwho scored for Russia: Roman Pavlyuchenko - Guus Hiddink's secretweapon.”

The game Frost was referring to was Russia’s 2-1 European Championship qualifying win in 2007. On reflection, it’s probably fair to say that he is suffering from a bout of sour grapes. On that occasion, the Russia squad contained only two players, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Dmitri Torbinsky, who played regularly on the artificial pitch for their club side Spartak Moscow. The rest of the Russian side played their football elsewhere, and would only have had, at best, intermittent exposure to the synthetic grass.

Last October, during qualification for the 2010 World Cup, Germany were due to travel to Moscow to face Russia in a crucial qualifier in their quest to secure their place in South Africa. Jogi Loew, the German coach, prepared his side for the game by taking them to Mainz to spend the build-up training on an artificial surface - even going so far as matching the watering patterns of the Luzhniki pitch. The Germans won the game 1-0, but whether Loew’s planning was the reason for the victory or not is uncertain. Such a luxury is not available to Inter coach Jose Mourinho, whose side’s Serie A commitments mean that their only pre-match experience of the pitch will be their training session at the Luzhniki last night.

So, realistically speaking, what would be the alternative to the Luzhniki's synthetic grass? The Russian winter is long and cold, and many of the pitches are still in a fragile condition when the domestic season kicks off in mid-March. Even a casual inspection of the surfaces in the Russian Premier League - besides maybe those in the southern republics - will give you an impression of the problems that persist until the summer sun starts to appear. The poor quality of the natural field produced by Frost and his colleagues for the 2008 Champions League final is symptomatic of the difficulties experienced in a climate which is hardly optimised for the cultivation of natural grass.

CSKA no longer play their home league matches at the Luzhniki – other than for big derby games – with coach Leonid Slutsky last season deciding that they would benefit more from playing on natural turf. He may be regretting that decision, however, as his side’s first two games at the Khimki Arena – situated in the suburbs of Moscow – yielded just a single goal. “A heavy field means heavy football,” remarked CSKA midfielder Evgeny Aldonin after a sterile goalless draw with city rivals Dinamo on the stadium’s flimsy pitch. “We will have to wait until the sun warms up and the grass turns green.” Champions Rubin are also experiencing problems - currently looking to temporarily relocate while their battered pitch recovers. “In theory, all could be corrected by May,” remarked their groundsman. Sovetski-Sport weren’t quite so tolerant, describing the field as “assassinated”.

Overall, it is likely that CSKA hold a small advantage over their Italian visitors when it comes to the game. Some like to hypothesise that the pitch is beneficial to more technical teams; others, such as Inter’s chief executive Ernesto Paolillo, prefer to argue the complete opposite. More often that not, the opinion voiced is often based on the result of a match - be it positive or negative.

In reality though, CSKA’s familiarity is likely to be the most fundamental factor, with their players having spent the whole of last season playing on it. For all the arguments that may still persist about the pitch’s suitability, a glance at the destroyed turf at the Khimki Arena or Rubin’s Central Stadium should be enough to silence the cynics – until the next big game, anyway.

Inter Will Win The Champions League Soon - Jose Mourinho
Mourinho is confident he can deliver the Champions League title...

Inter coach Jose Mourinho believes the long-awaited Champions League trophy will arrive soon.

The Nerazzurri are through to the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in seven years and Mourinho feels his side can go on to win it.

"We have reached the semi-finals in a deserved and comforting way," he told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

"This team has faith and a capacity that can help them win. We are playing in the Champions League with great faith, and if we don't win it now then we will within a couple of years because we are on the right track."

Wesley Sneijder grabbed the only goal of the game at the Luzhniki Stadium to send the Beneamata through as 2-0 aggregate winners.
