Top doubles pair separated for Kedah Open
KUALA LUMPUR: Absence, they say, makes the heart grow fonder.
And world number one pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are about to experience it first hand when their partnership is broken up for the Kedah Open, which will be held in Alor Setar from July 21-24.
But Malaysian badminton fans need not worry. This is just a temporary arrangement to prepare them to get it right at the World Championships, which will be held in Paris from Aug 23-29.
At the Kedah Open, Kien Keat will team up with Ong Soon Hock while Boon Heong will be reunited with his former world junior champion partner Hoon Thien How.
And, based on the draw for the opening leg of National Circuit yesterday, these scratch pairs may face each other as early as in the second round.
The decision to break them up will certainly add a tinge of excitement to the local circuit and help pull in the crowd for the early rounds.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary Ng Chin Chai said yesterday that the Kien Keat-Boon Heong partnership would not be split up permanently.
Just last week, the duo fell to a shock defeat to back-up pair Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong in the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold in Johor Baru.
Chin Chai, who is also the coaching and training committee chairman, then explained the coaches’ decision to form scratch pairs at the Kedah Open.
“Kien Keat and Boon Heong have played together for so long. This decision is taken to break the monotony,” he said.
“It will also lessen the pressure on them – after having had to live up to high expectations all the time.
“This brief time being away from each other may just be the right tonic to make them come back together even stronger.
“Sometimes, we tend to appreciate our partner better when we are not together all the time.”
Kien Keat-Soon Hock and Boon Heong-Thien How are in the same half with top seeds Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif.
In the bottom half are second seeds Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen, Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng and two top back-up pairs – Hee Chun-Wee Kiong and Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon.
It was also confirmed that world number one Lee Chong Wei will skip the opening leg of the national premier circuit.
In his absence, Mohd Hafiz Hashim is the top seed, thus, giving all the aspiring back-up shuttlers their best shot at winning their first local Open title.

Former Thomas Cupper Teik Hock passes away
GEORGE TOWN: Malaysian badminton has lost another of its illustrious shuttlers with the passing away of former Thomas Cupper Law Teik Hock.
Teik Hock, who played a sterling role in helping Malaya become the inaugural champions of the prestigious Thomas Cup in 1949, died of old age on Tuesday. He was 89.
He left behind his wife Khoo Cheng Poh and a son, Beng Yeow.
Beng Yeow said the cortege will leave their residence at No. 38, Kim Bian Aik Road in Penang at 2pm today for the Batu Gantong crematorium.
Teik Hock played alongside other Malayan badminton greats like Wong Peng Soon, Ong Poh Lim, Chan Kon Leong, Yeoh Teik Chye, Teoh Seng Khoon and his namesake in Ooi Teik Hock back in the 40s and 50s. He is best remembered as the player who inspired Malaya to Thomas Cup victory 61 years ago.
His stunning 15-5, 15-0 win over Jorn Skaarup at first singles sparked his team-mates into overdrive as they overran Denmark 8-1 to lift the coveted Cup.

BAM believe ‘isolation preparation’ can reap success in world meet
KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will be sending a 30-member team to Bath University in England from Aug 10-Aug 20 as part of their early preparation for the World Championships, which will be held in Paris from Aug 23-29.
But whether it will be a waste of taxpayers’ money – amounting to thousands of ringgit – or not remains to be seen.
The team include the eight World Championships qualifiers – Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying.
They will be accompanied by seven sparring players (three singles and four doubles), six coaches (Rexy Mainaky, Rashid Sidek, Misbun Sidek, Pang Cheh Chang, Hendrawan and Teh Seu Bock) and team officials as well as a support team from the National Sports Institute (NSI), which hopefully will not be bigger that the badminton squad.
Top Hopes: Malaysia will be banking on world No 1 pair Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong to deliver at the world meet.
BAM believe that their new approach would do a world of good for the World Championships-bound players as training at the Bath University will minimise distractions.
BAM’s target is to have a finalist each in the men’s singles and men’s doubles events although their big dream is to see a Malaysian emerge as world champion for the first time.
Hopes are high on the world number ones – Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong – to live up to their top rankings in the singles and doubles events.
BAM secretary Ng Chin Chai yesterday defended their move to send the team to Bath.
“Our post-mortem report (after the Thomas Cup Finals) concluded that training in isolation would be good for the players. There will be less distraction and they can focus more on training. They will be able to get sufficient rest too,” said Chin Chai.
“Besides, the climate and time difference in Paris is similar to that in England. In fact, it is cheaper for us to stay at the Bath University because of the MoU (Memorandum of Undestanding) signed between the university and the Malaysian government.
“Malaysia have never won the world title and we want to stay focused on achieving success there although it will cost us a little more.
“If we fail at the world meet, it will show that we have failed in our processes. But we think, this approach is worth trying.”
BAM general manager Kenny Goh said the team would only be charged £1,300 (RM6,330) for the use of the state-of-art sports facilities at the university.
There will be additional costs for accommodation (ranging from £18-£45 per night), food (£20 per person) and flight.
“The players will be able to use the badminton courts for six hours per day. The use of the swimming pools and gymnasium are for unlimited hours. We believe that this arrangement will be an advantage for our team,” said Kenny.
In 2006, Malaysia spent about RM400,000 to train one week earlier in Madrid for the World Championships in Spain. And the outcome – none got past the semi-finals.

BAM rombak tugas Rexy

Coach wants to see determination from Fairuzizuan and Zakry in Kedah
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: It does not matter if the national men’s pair of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif lose at the Kedah Open, which begins on Wednesday in Alor Setar.
All coach Rosman Razak wants is to see from the duo is their determination to bounce back and be among the top pairs in the country again.
The duo are making a return to competition following Fairuzizuan serving out a one-month ban from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for losing his cool against an unruly fan during the Thomas Cup Finals in Bukit Jalil in May.
Besides the opening leg of the national circuit in Kedah, Fairuzizuan-Zakry will also get to play in the Macau Open scheduled for July 27-Aug 1.
Rosman said that the toughest part for a player was to make a comeback after experiencing a bitter episode – such as the fine imposed by the BAM and the lack of results in international tournaments this year.
But he hoped that they would forget the past and move on.
“It is much tougher on them, especially when the Kedah Open will be their first tournament after the ban. They know that all eyes will be on them and that may created pressure,” said Rosman.
“I have told them to look forward to the future. It will be interesting to see how they carry themselves.”
Rosman said that the door had not been closed on the duo in getting into the team for the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.
“We’ll see how they fare in the Kedah Open and Macau Open.
“I hope to see a determination to lift their game. Currently, some of the back-up pairs are doing better than them. Winning will be a bonus,” he said.
Fairuzizuan-Zakry are the top seeds in the Kedah Open but they have tricky matches in the top half of the draw, which has the scratch pairs of Koo Kien Keat-Ong Soon Hock and Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How.
The coaches decided to split the partnerships of world No. 1 Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Soon Hock-Thien How for the Kedah Open.
They hope that the temporary split will help, especially Kien Keat and Boon Heong, play better as a pair at the world championships, which will be held in Paris from Aug 23-29.
In the bottom half are second seeds Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen and two aspiring back-up pairs Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah.

Koo and Tan go Batu Caves way for speed and power
KUALA LUMPUR: Top men’s doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are doing the unusual as part of their preparation for the world championships.
And coach Pang Cheh Chang believes that this will do the trick for the duo to mount strong challenges in the tournament in Paris scheduled for Aug 23-29.
Twice last week, Kien Keat-Boon Heong together with another pair, Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock, had to go up and down the 272 steps at Batu Caves.
Boon Heong will be playing in the mixed doubles for the first time when he gets into action with Chin Eei Hui at the Kedah Open, which begins tomorrow in Alor Setar.
But he will not be partnering Kien Keat for the men’s doubles. He renews his world junior championship winning partnership with Thien How while Kien Keat pair up with Soon Hock.
Cheh Chang, who has been in charge of the doubles shuttlers for a month now, said that he was thinking outside the box to get Kien Keat-Boon Heong to perform consistently well on the world stage.
“Kien Keat-Boon Heong have not dropped in standard since their breakthrough in 2006. But some of the other top pairs have done better than them by improving on their speed and power,” he said.
“Our pair have to work on these areas too in order to keep up with the others, especially those from China and South Korea.
“I have given deep thoughts on how to make them play faster on court. And to make it interesting, I am trying to bring in new ways of doing things. I am happy that they have been cooperative.
“We went to the Batu Caves twice last week. On each day, they climbed up and down the steps seven times. We are also giving a lot of emphasis on warming-up sessions prior to on-court training.
“Activities are geared towards improving their speed and power. They have great experience and skills but it has to be complemented with this. They have been playing as a pair for four years and we are trying to get them excited about the game all over again.”
Besides the Kedah Open, Kien Keat-Boon Heong will also be competing in the Taiwan Open from Aug 3-8. These will be the only two tournaments for Kien Keat-Boon Heong before they play in the world championships as the top seeds and much is expected of them.

Homing in on local title
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying have big hopes in their debut at the world badminton championships, which will be held in Paris from Aug 23-29.
But first, the world No. 13 have a score to settle in the Kedah Open, which begins tomorrow in Alor Setar.
The duo, who are the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to win an international Open title – in Thailand this year – are bent on ending an elusive chase for a domestic title.
“We have qualified for the world championships but ironically, Liu Ying and I have not won a local tournament. Hopefully, we will make it happen in the Kedah Open,” said Peng Soon.
“If not for Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty, there were new winners in the mixed doubles but we were not one of them.”
The closest Peng Soon-Liu Ying came to winning a local title was at the National Grand Prix Finals this year but they were beaten by Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Pei Tty in the final.
For the tournament in Alor Setar, Peng Soon-Liu Ying are the top seeds and they are in the same half of the draw with Kien Keat-Florah Ng and Mohd Razif Latif-Vivian Hoo.
The other half has second seeds Ong Jian Guo-Sabrina Chong, Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei and Tan Boon Heong-Chin Eei Hui.
Peng Soon will also be able to give more concentration in the mixed doubles because his regular men’s doubles partner Lim Khim Wah has withdrawn because of a knee injury and he will pair up with Jian Guo.
“Liu Ying and I want to change the trend in the mixed doubles. A first title on the local circuit will certainly put us in a good stead going into our first world championships,” said Peng Soon.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying will also be taking part in the Taiwan Open prior to the world championships.
On his hope in the world championships, Peng Soon said: “It will be a wonderful experience for us. Our aim to make sure that we take down at least one big name in the game.
“Liu Ying and I are getting better and we have moved up in the world rankings. But injuries are our fears. Liu Ying is taking great care not to suffer a recurrence of a knee injury (picked up in the Asian Championships in India in April).
“I also felt some strain on my knee last week and had to go through light training for two days. We have to look into this.”
Besides Peng Soon-Liu Ying, Malaysia will also be represented in the world championships by Kien Keat-Pei Tty. But their participation will depend on Pei Tty’s knee condition. |
