Premier League: Ferdinand a big doubt for Reds clash
Rio Ferdinand is a doubt for Manchester United's big Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
The England defender sat out Tuesday's 2-0 win over Bolton, which took United three points clear of Arsenal at the top.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed after the win that Ferdinand may not be fit for the Liverpool game, and he rested Wes Brown in case Ferdinand does not recover from a back injury.
Ferguson brought in Gerard Pique in the centre of defence and he said: "I had to find out about Gerard Pique.
"We've got great confidence in the lad and he's come through very well. That was important."
Ferguson added about th win: "At times, we were a bit relaxed. When we speeded the game up, we played with great precision and penetration in the last third and we could have scored a few goals." |

Sicknote Saha beyond a joke
Manchester United fans have grown more than tired with Louis Saha's constant battle against injury niggles.
The frail Frenchman will no doubt be even more frustrated himself with his failure to remain fit but his record is becoming something of a sick joke.
Against a team beaten by ten men at the weekend and struggling in the bottom three, a start for a home striker at Old Trafford should be manna from Heaven for the man concerned.
As Wayne Rooney restlessly sat kicking his heels on the bench, the stage was set for Saha to produce a performance to convince Sir Alex Ferguson he can play a part in the exciting end to the campaign.
Instead he was mostly a bystander as Cristiano Ronaldo, donning the captain's armband, simply took centre stage with two goals to take his tally to 33 in 37 games this term.
Bolton were beaten with 70 minutes still left to play and a hungry striker would have looked to run riot against Gary Megson's dispirited troops. Yet Saha flitted in and out of the proceedings, showing only glimpses of the ability he undoubtedly possesses.
His most impressive moment, when he superbly muscled his way into possession drew only a whistle for handball by referee Alan Wiley.
As United only attacked sporadically after the break, clearly under instruction not to over-tax themselves before the clash with Liverpool on Sunday, one raid allowed Saha the chance to try his luck from the edge of the box.
The shot was horrible. The Old Trafford hordes groaned. Saha sat subdued, feeling his hamstring.
The Premier League's most injury prone player hobbled around in some distress before being replaced mercifully by the rampaging Rooney, who would have had a late goal but for Nani's utter selfishness after winning the ball inside his own box and tearing forward to join the attack.
At least Saha managed longer than he did on his last Old Trafford showing when he was injured in the warm-up, and not for the first time this season.
It is fair to predict he will not be around in Manchester next year and that Ferguson must be growing as impatient as the crowd with the unreliability of the former Fulham attacker. |

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Pique did well
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted with Gerard Pique's performance in their 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers. |
Pique came in for the injured Rio Ferdinand while Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were all rested.
"It was not a great performance but it was necessary to make those changes as Rio Ferdinand is doubtful for Sunday with a back problem," said Ferguson. "I had to find out about Gerard Pique. We've got great confidence in the lad and he's come through very well. "They are all top players so you have to put your faith and trust in them. "At times we were a bit relaxed in the second half but when we speeded up the game and played with great penetration at times we could have scored a few more goals." |

Fergie lauds Ronaldo qualityWinger sets club benchmark with Bolton brace
Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo after the winger struck both goals in Manchester United's 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.
Ronaldo, who was made captain for the night, surpassed George Best's club record for goals in a season for a winger by taking his tally to 33 for the campaign.
He has 24 in the Premier League and United boss Ferguson praised the Portugal international after the champions moved three points clear at the top of the table.
"I think it's phenomenal," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "It speaks everything for the player.
"I don't think there is a winger in this world that can do that and that's the measure of the quality of the lad and his scoring ability."
Marking card
When asked if Ronaldo is the best on the planet, Ferguson replied: "I think he's making all the headlines for himself with his performances and goals are telling you that.
"I said last year he was the best player in the world, but he didn't win it because Kaka did, quite rightly, when you've won the European Cup because that's the marking card for the great players.
"You hope Ronaldo this year is challenging for that by winning the European Cup for us."
Ferguson made seven changes from the team which started against Derby County at the weekend and he was happy to see his decision pay dividends.
Ticking over
He added: "I thought maybe we relaxed too much. When we played with some speed and real penetration, we were a real threat and could have scored a few goals that way.
"Credit to Bolton. They are fighting for their lives and they showed that. I thought they played some good football at times and probably deserved better than they got.
"The important thing for us was to win the game. We made some changes, we felt it was needed.
"It has worked for us in that respect and I'm very, very pleased with that. Sometimes when you make changes and it doesn't work out, you are quite rightly going to be criticised.
"We have to make changes to keep everyone ticking over and we are pleased with three points. Some of the performances were good and others looked as if they needed a game." |

Cristiano Ronaldo tops George Best's record
Sir Alex Ferguson watched his Manchester United side go three points clear at the top of the table last night but then insisted that Chelsea have the title in their own hands.
Speaking after a routine Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired 2-0 win against Bolton propelled United three points clear of Arsenal - effectively four with goal difference - and five ahead of Chelsea, who drew 4-4 at Tottenham, Ferguson said: "The title race will go to the wire and the race has still too far to go for our lead to be decisive.
"Chelsea hold the key to it because they play both ourselves and Arsenal at home, where they have been very, very strong. But we have a lead and that's important. It is not a significant one but it is a lead, nonetheless. With eight games to go the team who plays with the most consistency now will win it.
"I have always said that the most consistent team will win the title and, if we can keep that consistency, then we have a chance."
With United due to face Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday and Arsenal travelling to Stamford Bridge on the same day, Ferguson is aware that more will be decided at the weekend than was last night.
However, the United manager will have the bonus of a player who last night passed George Best's club record for goals scored in a season by a winger.
Best scored 32 in 1968 while Ronaldo, captaining the club for the first time, hit both United's goals, taking his tally to 33, including 24 in the Premier League.
Ronaldo's second goal, a brilliant, 25-yard free-kick, was another contender for goal of the season.
Ferguson added: "Ronaldo's free-kick was marvellous. He does put in the practice and he has this technique. It's fantastic and speaks volumes about the player. It's amazing that he can do that playing in the position he does."
Bolton manager Gary Megson agreed. "It was genius from probably the best player in the world at the moment," he said.
But Ferguson again expressed concern about his side's wastefulness. "We could have scored a few more goals and in the second half we were a bit charitable. Bolton are fighting for their lives at the foot of the league and they had a real go at us. They played some good football at times and it was a credit to their tenacity. They deserved better than they got." |

Man Utd's Nani: I've copped Ferguson hairdryer
Manchester United wing dazzler Nani insists manager Sir Alex Ferguson hasn't warned him to cut-out the showboating.
Nani courted controversy when he went on a juggling run against Arsenal in United's famous FA Cup victory and told O Jogo: "I do not think that I was showboating, it was something that happened naturally and that people interpreted the wrong way.
"While trying to control the ball, it bounced badly and rose up, and it was the way I found not to lose it. But I did not do it to enjoy myself. Some people of Arsenal were angry about other things and unloaded their fury at this incident. "Indeed, some people of Arsenal said that we tried to humiliate them and show disdain. It's a lie [that Ferguson cautioned him about it]. Nobody called me to talk about it. "Almost all the players have already felt that [the hairdryer]," he did concede. "I have already suffered, I admit it! "You can be sure that the coach will confront the players and shouts at us in the face." |
