Shares on Malaysian stock market halted from trade after KLCI plunged 10% to 1166.32 with 879.6 million shares changing hands, triggering circuit breaker.
Shares will resume trade after one hour at 0800 GMT; dealers expect further sharp declines across the board. "Calling a market floor at this stage would be futile. This relentless selldown is unlikely to taper off any time soon," says dealer. Expects benchmark to fall further, possibly test next circuit breaker at 1101.89, or 15% fall from Friday's close at 1296.33.
Leading declines are government-linked construction and infrastructure related stocks; KPS (5843.KU) down 50.9% at MYR1.68, MRCB (1651.KU) down 37.3% at MYR1.21, Puncak Niaga (6807.KU) down 30.1% at MYR3.16, UEM World (1775.KU) down 25% at MYR2.58. Heavyweights Sime Darby (4197.KU) down 17.3% at MYR9.10, Tenaga (5347.KU) down 14.5% at MYR7.40 and Maybank (1155.KU) down 6.7% at MYR8.35. |
