UCHENNA & JOYCE ARE GROUNDED A risky flight with a tight connection sealed the fate of married couple Uchenna & Joyce who landed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia hours after the other Teams checked in after missing their plane in Frankfurt. The only previous winners of the race became the seventh Team eliminated while beauty queens Dustin & Kandice notched up their second win.
A BOLD MOVE
Departing the Pit Stop together in first place at 9:48pm, best friends Oswald & Danny and married couple Uchenna & Joyce opened their clue instructing them to fly over 5,500 miles to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Working separately, the two Teams each discovered a 7:00am flight to Frankfurt that would arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 6:40am the following day. However, the biggest concern was a tight one-hour connection in Frankfurt. The travel agent working with Oswald & Danny instead advised a flight through Paris that would land in Kuala Lumpur at 7:25am. The pair accepted the connection through Paris while Uchenna & Joyce opted for the riskier flight through Frankfurt, saying, "It's a race for a million dollars. If we make it, it'll definitely pay off."
Trying to gain an advantage in finding a better flight, cousins Charla & Mirna went to a hotel to use their internet service. As each cousin took control of the two available computers, dating couple Eric & Danielle arrived at the hotel in hopes of using a computer of their own. When the dating couple asked the cousins if they could use of them, Mirna tersely replied, "No. We just got on." Deciding to return to the airport, the miffed Eric & Danielle poked fun at Charla & Mirna in their taxi thus becoming another Team irritated by the forceful cousins. However, the strategy of commandeering the computers paid off handsomely for Charla & Mirna who booked a flight landing in Kuala Lumpur at 4:45am.
At the airport, Dustin & Kandice and Eric & Danielle booked the same flight as Oswald & Danny connecting through Paris landing at 7:25am in Kuala Lumpur. The two Teams noticed that Uchenna & Joyce decided to risk the tight connection in Frankfurt. Eric commented, "You guys are braver than me. With all the stuff we've been through." A positive Uchenna said, "We're optimistic about it. Things should work out."
STRANDED
The optimism for the married couple quickly turned to fear when their plane landed ten minutes late in Frankfurt. With the gate agent telling Uchenna & Joyce that it was too late to board their connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur, the married couple begged and pleaded to no avail. After asking at other airlines, the earliest they could find a flight out of Frankfurt would be the next day. Very concerned, Joyce said, "Hopefully other people have issues. "
COUSINS IN FRONT
Landing in Kuala Lumpur at 4:45am, cousins Charla & Mirna exited the airport and, with the help of locals on the plane, boarded the correct train and bus to the Batu Caves. Arriving at the steps of the caves, the cousins spotted the cluebox perched high above them requiring a long walk up a very long set of stairs. Reaching the top, the cousins opened their clue instructing them to travel ten miles by taxi to Kampung Baru Mosque and search the nearby streets for their next clue and the first opportunity in the race for a Yield that allows a Team to slow down another Team behind them.
With three Teams behind them en route to the Batu Caves, cousins Charla & Mirna arrived at Kampung Baru Mosque and spotted their clue. Choosing not to Yield anyone, the pair opened the clue to find a Detour having to choose between Artistic Expression and Cookie Confection. In Artistic Expression, Teams needed to travel one third of a mile on foot to Dewan Lama. Once there, they had to use an ancient technique known as batik to exactly duplicate one of three patterns onto and then dye a 45 square-foot piece of cloth. The task required the careful application of an artistic skill, but Teams with an eye for detail could find them selves jumping ahead. In Cookie Confection, Teams made their way on foot half a mile to Chow Kit Bomba and search through 600 boxes of traditional Malaysian special cookies and find the one that had a black licorice center. The task required no skill, but Teams with a sweet tooth and a bit of luck could finish quickly.
IT'S JUST A GAME
As Charla & Mirna began stuffing their faces with cookies, the beauty queens cooked up their strategy of using the Yield. With Oswald & Danny, Eric & Danielle, and Dustin & Kandice all taking separate ways to the Batu Caves, no Team knew where the others were. Passing Oswald & Danny who searched the streets by the mosque and with Uchenna & Joyce nowhere in sight, the beauty queens decided to enact an insurance policy by yielding Eric & Danielle, saying, "This is a game. We could very well be fighting for last now. They're gonna hate us forever." Their prognostication proved correct because, when Eric & Danielle discovered they had been yielded, they had plenty to say about the beauty queens. Eric referred to them as "dirty pirate hookers" while Danielle added, "the blondes are fake and phony."
Realizing the futility of searching through 600 boxes of cookies, Charla & Mirna threw in the towel and headed to Dewan Lama for some Artistic Expression where the beauty queens already had a great start on the pattern making. As Mirna had to pick up the slack for Charla because she couldn't reach high enough on the table to make the pattern, Dustin & Kandice finished painting the beautiful cloth in blazing red to earn their clue. Opening it, the duo learned they had to travel six miles by taxi to the neighborhood of Taman Sri Hartamas and locate a newspaper truck.
THE FRIENDS FIGHT
At Danny's insistence, best friends Oswald & Danny decided to hunt through the many boxes of colorful cookies for the one with licorice. Very quickly, the friends were at odds over the best approach. Danny incorrectly believed that he could only taste one cookie in a box and toss it on the ground since all the cookies in a box would taste like licorice if he found the right one. Oswald tried to explain that only one cookie in all 600 boxes would taste like licorice. The pair left briefly but Danny's complaints that Oswald never listened to his suggestions prompted Oswald to insist they return to eat more cookies.
With time ticking on Eric & Danielle's yield, the best friends continued their search for the licorice cookie in vain with Oswald insisting, "I'm gonna do this for you." Eventually Danny caved though, remarking, "We don't see eye to eye, so let's just go to the other place." The time the best friends wasted allowed Eric & Danielle to finish their Yield and, in what appeared to be a bad idea, head to search through the boxes of cookies.
BEING GREEN
Arriving in Taman Sri Hartamas in first place, Dustin & Kandice found a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, one Team member had to give a nod to Malaysia's eco-friendly practice of recycling. Team members chose a bicycle with a side cart attached and scoured the neighborhood for residents willing to sell them their used newspapers. Once they had collected enough newspapers to make an eight-hands high stack, they would receive their next clue.
Looking very cute in her helmet, Kandice pedaled on her bike through the streets shouting out for old newspapers. After donating a sizable stack, one man told a flattered Kandice she would have no difficulties finding newspapers with the way she looked. Indeed, Kandice had no problems at all as she returned to where Dustin waited with the required eight-hand high stack of papers just as Charla & Mirna showed up. Opening their clue, the beauty queens learned they needed to travel six miles by taxi to the next Pit Stop at Caracosa Seri Negara.
Since the Roadblock involved a bicycle, Mirna had no choice but to do the task. She struggled to move the bike in the direction she wanted and barely began scouring for newspapers as Oswald & Danny and Eric & Danielle, who found the lucky cookie, arrived on the scene.
As the three Teams battled for the neighborhood's old newspapers, Dustin & Kandice stepped onto the mat in first place collecting their second win of the season. For their efforts, they received from Phil a pair of retro scooters.
DOWN TO THE WIRE
After recruiting some locals she dubbed "Team Charla Mirna", Mirna and her pals trudged her bike with the huge, heavy stacks of papers up the hill to where she needed to unload them. Before reading the clue en route to a second place finish, Mirna gave a warning to her new friends. "These are future Charlas and Mirnas of the world, the juniors. Stay out of drugs. Go to school. Be a professional and you're in good shape."
In a tight race between Danielle and Danny, Danny complained to Oswald about the strenuous task, saying, "Hating you." Meanwhile, Danielle turned the corner a little too sharply and damaged her wheel forcing her to walk the bike. Finally procuring enough papers, Danielle pushed her bike with all her strength realizing that she has performed every physically tough Roadblock for her Team noting about Eric, "He's a woman." Her persistence paid off as the couple finished in third. Being forced to spend a large amount of money to get enough newspapers, Danny finally completed the Roadblock allowing he and Oswald to claim fourth. |
