SEOUL (Reuters) - Here is the dramatic, confused exchange between a sinking South Korean ferry and maritime traffic control on the southern honeymoon island of Jeju after the vessel started to list at 8.49 a.m. last Wednesday (12.49 a.m. BST).

The Sewol sank on a routine trip from the port of Incheon to Jeju. Of the 476 passengers and crew on board, 339 were children and teachers on a high school outing. Only 174 people have been rescued and the remainder are all presumed to have drowned.

The official confirmed death toll is over 100.

A boy called a fire station by his mobile phone at 8.52 a.m., a fire officer said. The ship sent out a distress call to Jeju at 8.55 a.m. Jeju then notified the nearer control station on the island of Jindo.

The conversation was transcribed from a release by the government.

8.55 a.m. Sewol: "Jeju, do you copy?"

Jeju: "Yes Sewol, this is Jeju."

Sewol: "Contact the coastguard. The ship is in danger. The ship is listing."

8.56 a.m. Jeju: "Where is your ship? We'll contact the coastguard."

Sewol: "The ship is capsizing. We can't move. Come quickly.

We are next to Byeongpung Island."

Jeju: "Roger that."

Jeju to coastguard: "Emergency call made."

8.58 a.m. Jeju: "Sewol, this is Jeju, do you copy? Sewol, this is Jeju."

Sewol: "Jeju, this is the Sewol."

9.00 a.m. Jeju: "Sewol, this is Jeju."

Sewol: "Yes, this is the Sewol."

Jeju: "How is the situation right now?"

Sewol: "The ship is listed to the left. Containers have fallen."

Jeju: "OK. What about the passengers?"

Sewol: "We can't confirm. The ship is listed so we can't move."

Jeju: "OK. Make passengers wear life jackets and get ready in case you need to abandon ship."

Sewol: "It's difficult for the passengers to move now."

Jeju: "OK."

9.05 a.m. Sewol: "Jeju, this is the Sewol. Do you copy?"

Jeju: "Yes, Sewol, this is Jeju."

Sewol: "What's happening with the coastguard?"

Jeju: "We've notified the coastguard. We are on the line with Jindo VTS (vessel traffic services) and Wando (another island) VTS. Stand by."

Takziah..... seram pulak nk naik feri...... aku selalu gi langkawi naik flight, cuti sekolah coming soon anak aku beriya nak gi naik feri.... biasa la, asyik naik flight je teringin jugak dia nk naik feri..... nampaknya aku nk siap sedia bwk life jacket la, hover ke gitu? aku tak pandai berenang tp anak aku pandai tp mampu kena dorang nk selamatkan aku yg terkial2 dlm air nnt? tak mampu aku nak fikirkan

pandai berenang di kolam renang blom tentu mampu berenang di tgh laut yg bergelora kak.

SEOUL/MOKPO (Reuters) - The crew of a South Korean ferry that sank with hundreds of people on board repeatedly asked officers on the bridge whether or not to give the order to abandon ship, but there was no response, a crew member has said.

The Sewol ferry sank last Wednesday on a routine trip south from the port of Incheon to the sub-tropical holiday island of Jeju. The death toll stood at 104 on Tuesday, media reported.

Of the 476 passengers and crew on board, 339 were children and teachers on a high school outing. Only 174 people have been rescued and the remainder are all presumed to have drowned.

The captain of the ship, Lee Joon-seok, 69, and other crew members have been arrested on negligence charges. Lee was also charged with undertaking an "excessive change of course without slowing down".

Several crew members, including the captain, left the ferry as it was sinking before many of the passengers, witnesses have said, after passengers were told to stay in their cabins. President Park Geun-hye said on Monday that instruction was tantamount to an "act of murder".

Public broadcaster KBS, quoting transcripts of the conversation between the crew and sea traffic control, the Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Centre, said the passengers were told repeatedly to stay put.

"Stay where you are. Don't move. If you move, it will be more dangerous," the passengers were told.

For half an hour, the crew on the third deck kept asking the bridge by walkie-talkie whether or not they should make the order to abandon ship, KBS said.

No one answered.

"At the time, we could not confirm what the situation was on the bridge," KBS quoted a crew member as saying.

"We kept trying to find out but ... since there was no instruction coming from the bridge, the crew on the third floor followed the instructions on the manual and kept making 'stay where you are' announcements. At least three times."

Many of the children did not question their elders, as is customary in hierarchical Korean society. They paid for their obedience with their lives.

It was one of the children who first raised the alarm, a fire station officer told Reuters. That call was followed by about 20 others, all from children, and transferred to the coastguard.

Lee was not on the bridge when the ship turned. Navigation was in the hands of a 26-year old third mate who was in charge for the first time on that part of the journey, according to crew members.

Lee, seen on television with his head lowered and covered, told reporters soon after the sinking he feared passengers would be swept away by the ferocious currents if they abandoned ship. He has not explained why he left the vessel.

ioll rasa harus la kapten dan crew dtangkap..takut pulak bunuh diri..nnti hilang pulak kambing hitam..

It is not clear why the ferry sank, but experts have suggested it either hit a rock or turned sharply, unbalancing the vessel as cargo shifted.

Tak mungkin terbalik terus.
Sebab laut x dalam.
Kalau kena iceberg mcm Titanic............laen laaa
Panjang n besaq lubang dia.

Kalau ada cargo.................
Feri bawak keter, loghi/bas n mu2 jer sebagai cargo.
Benda2 nih bley shif kalau kapai sendeng/condong terlalu banyak.
Sebab depa x secured mcm cargo laen.
