Reds must get back in the ring

Losing two games on the bounce is a rarity at United – a sign of temperament as much as talent in the players at Old Trafford. So there’s really only one plausible response to the frustrating defeat at Stamford Bridge and the hurtful loss at Anfield in the past week: get back on the winning trail.

Unfortunately, United must wait a fortnight to get the title charge up and running again, but an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal this Saturday and next week’s Champions League last 16 second-leg tie with Marseille means it’s straight back in the ring for the Reds.

As one of the most experienced members of the United squad, Rio Ferdinand is well acquainted with the requirements and expectations that follow defeat, and although he is currently in worst position of all - injured and unable therefore to do anything directly about it - his attitude sums up the response that must follow.

“I was really pleased with how we bounced back from the defeat to Wolves and won against Manchester City,” he explains to Inside United magazine. “As soon as we lost, winning the next game became the most important thing in our minds. It didn’t matter who the oppnents were or how we picked up the points – we just knew we had to win. I’ve been at United for nine years and I can’t think of many occasions when we’ve lost two games back to back.

“I hate [losing]. It’s just the way I am. I’m the same when I’m messing about on a computer game: I always want to win and I’ve always been like that. When that feeling leaves me it’ll be time to hang up my boots.”

Winning becomes habitual – it’s a habit United have momentarily surrendered but must quickly discover the knack of again.

Rooney is star man in February

Wayne Rooney is ManUtd.com’s Player of the Month for February. The Reds' no.10 may not have consistently reached 2009/10's heights this term, but last month he conjured some spectacular moments – most notably that overhead kick winner against Manchester City – to swing fans' votes in his favour.

Rooney notched 34.9 per cent of votes in our poll, beating Chris Smalling (24.6 per cent), Nemanja Vidic (22.7), Nani (16.8), and Patrice Evra, who propped up the nominees on one per cent.

The Reds striker faced stiff competition from defensive duo Nemanja Vidic - typically outstanding - and Chris Smalling, who seamlessly stepped into Rio Ferdinand’s boots. But Wayne provided stardust to light up the solid defensive displays.

He kicked off February with a rocket finish in the first minute of the first match, adding a second to ensure a 3-1 win over Aston Villa at OT, then he struck his unforgettable winner against City, acrobatically smashing the ball into the top corner, before adding a fourth February strike in the 4-0 win over Wigan. Continuing that form is vital to United's trophy assault.

How the votes were cast (percentages):

      Wayne Rooney 34.9
Chris Smalling 24.6
Nemanja Vidic 22.7
Nani 16.8
Patrice Evra 1.0

Today at OT: Nani update

Our editorial team provide regular updates from OT. Join in on the Talking Reds thread.

Monday 7 March

18:00 Nani has just posted an update on Twitter about his injury and it sounds positive thankfully. The winger said: "Thank you for your support after my injury. I hope to be back really soon." Let's hope really soon means Saturday! (GT)

16:58 I promised you a feature on the title run-in earlier, didn't I? Well, we're not being lazy, I promise. Steve Bartram is putting the finish touches to our in-depth look at the league landscape. We'll publish that on ManUtd.com on Tuesday morning. Plus, look out for an interview with Dimitar Berbatov on why confidence is so important to strikers, how United can improve away from home and where he keeps all his hat-trick matchballs! (BH)

16:18 Today's 60-second update from MUTV, ably read by Mark Sullivan, is now available to watch by clicking the link on the left. And if you want to hear Paddy Crerand's forthright opinions on what went wrong at Anfield, watch his self-titled show on MUTV today at 6.30pm. (James Tuck)

15:36 Arsenal may have a game in hand over us now, but don’t forget that game is away at White Hart Lane against a Tottenham side who have already beaten the Gunners on their own patch this season. Spurs would love nothing more than a double over their north London rivals, keep themselves in the running for another season in the Champions League and put a dent in Arsenal’s title drive all at the same time. That game isn’t until Wednesday 20 April – let’s hope the Reds can extend our lead yet further in the meantime. (IM)
15:28 Hindsight shows that my bet for United to win 3-2 at Anfield – placed at half-time at odds of 33/1 – was optimistic in the extreme. But hey, we’d already repeated that feat this season against another mid-table (ahem) team from the north-west in Blackpool, so it wasn’t beyond the realms of possibility. This time it just wasn’t to be. And after a pair of damaging defeats in the league, what better than a big cup tie – at home – against one of our oldest rivals to brush away the cobwebs and get us back on track? Saturday can’t come quick enough… and we’ll be watching Arsenal’s trip into the Catalan lion’s den with interest on Tuesday night. (Ian McLeish)

13:30 As Ben said earlier, the office has been rather quiet this morning, but it's important to remember that, for the moment, we are still in control at the top of the table. I thought Kenny Dalglish summed it up pretty well in today's papers actually when he said: "United are still the team to beat." Yes, the last few days have not been good, but we all know things in football can change very quickly and three positive results next week would certainly give everyone a big boost. (Gemma Thompson)

13:25 To get you in the mood for the weekend cup tie against Arsenal, there's a quick recap of Ji-sung Park's winning goal against the Gunners on their last visit to OT in the league in December. Click the link on the left to play the video. How we could have done with Park these last few weeks! (BH)

12:45 The positive thing is that we've got three home games on the trot now: Arsenal in the FA Cup, Marseille in the Champions League and Bolton in the league. Our home form has been excellent this term and we'll need to get ourselves back on track for the run-in. Our recent run of away fixtures - with our form on the road this season and without key defensive figures - was always bound to throw up some challenges. One positive: some of our toughest away fixtures are out of the way now. So, as the football phrase goes, let's kick on... (BH)

12:26 Apologies for the slow start to the live Today at OT blog, but I was in a huff in the corner, bottom lip upturned, arms folded and refusing to do any work. I've heard numerous people say the words "I hate football" in the last 24 hours or so and I guess that just about sums up what's it like after a defeat like Sunday's. In fact, shall we just not talk about it at all? The important thing is responding to a defeat, and Rio Ferdinand says that's something United do well. Also on ManUtd.com today, we're taking a more in-depth look at the title run-in and potential pitfalls for the main contenders and later this afternoon we'll announce the results of our February Player of the Month. So, stay tuned. (Ben Hibbs)

semoga cepat sembuh nani......

07/03/2011 12:00, Report by Mark Froggatt

Chicharito is a steal

Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his delight at how quickly Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has settled in at Old Trafford and described the United striker as incredible value for money following his low-key capture from Chivas.

In light of the January transfer window, in which an estimated £115million exchanged between Premier League clubs, the Reds boss is more than confident he picked out a bargain in Chicharito.

Sir Alex told Inside United: “We have done fantastically well there, no doubt. We’ve stolen him! It was quite a long process involved in bringing him here, and we’d prefer that.”

So far, Chicharito has bagged 14 goals from 31 appearances in all competitions and is rapidly gaining a reputation as something of a goal machine. It makes satisfying dividends for Sir Alex and head scout Jim Lawlor, who did a great deal of homework on the Mexican international before pen was put to paper.

“We analysed him and found out about his background. Once we knew that, Jim Lawlor stayed in Mexico for a month and made sure we got the deal done. We got him across to England and sealed all the contracts. It was a good bit of business."

Sir Alex continued: “It started last December (2009) actually and we didn’t get the deal done until May. But we’d been watching him since November. The reports were getting better and better so Jim spent a month in Mexico watching him in different games. His international record is incredible actually. He’s scoring almost a goal a game. It’s quite amazing.”

Sir Alex was speaking in the March edition of Inside United…

kendial fabio aurelio dikeluarkan.. masuk plak soto.. liverpool ubah formasi .soto main cB.. carra jadi RB..

end of result 3-1. a brilliant performance by liverpool.. poor form by man u ( as pundit says)
