Fergie backs Edwin to stay No1
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Edwin van der Sar to retain his place next season, despite the obvious claims of England hopeful Ben Foster.
The Dutch veteran, 37, kept another clean sheet at Wigan Athletic on Sunday to help United retain the Premier League title.
As part of The Red Devils' rock-solid defence, the former Fulham shot-stopper will be hoping to fend off the challenge of Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak once the 2008/2009 campaign comes around.
Although Ferguson voiced some concern at his keeper's kicking at the rain-soaked JJB Stadium, he underlined his faith in van der Sar afterwards.
"His experience is so important to us," Ferguson told Voetbalzone.
"You can see that he's played more than 120 international matches for the Dutch national team.
"Edwin radiates calm and is confident of his own abilities. And that spreads to our defence.
"If he continues to perform as he does, he can play for another year or two as his age doesn't bother me."

Man United's Ferguson chosen English soccer's top manager by colleagues
:pompom:
NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) -Alex Ferguson was selected as England's manager of the year on Monday night by his coaching colleagues - 24 hours after claiming his 10th Premier League title with Manchester United.
The 66-year-old Ferguson, who has managed United for the past 22 seasons, last received the honor by the League Managers' Association in 1999 when he guided the Reds to the treble of the Premier League, European Champions League and English FA Cup.
The managers of the 92 clubs in English soccer's four professional leagues form the LMA's membership.
"It is a tremendous honor that my fellow managers and LMA members should deem me worthy of this award,'' said Ferguson, who received the award from England manager and LMA president Fabio Capello. "I am very proud to receive it.''
Ferguson can claim a second European Champions League triumph when the Red Devils face Chelsea on May 21 in Moscow.:pompom: |
