Special henna for Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding

Jaipur, April 7 (IANS) Those of us who don't know where Sojat is, it's time to refresh their general knowledge. This is the place in Rajasthan from where Aishwarya Rai will get henna for her mehndi (henna) ceremony when she weds Abhishek Bachchan.

Over 15 kg of local henna will travel to wherever (the trader refuses to disclose where) the ceremony takes place. The henna packets would be sent five days prior to the wedding day.

'The Bachchan family contacted a mehndi agent in Mumbai who in turn has placed orders with two of the leading henna traders of Sojat,' sources told IANS here Friday.

These traders had prepared a special type of mehndi for model and actress Liz Hurley's wedding to NRI businessman Arun Nayar recently.

'We have received orders from an agent in Mumbai for the Bachchan wedding and we are preparing special packets for them. We will send these packets to wherever they decide to get married,' said Nitesh Agarwal, a Sojat-based mehndi trader.

Sojat and its surrounding areas in the Pali district of the state boast of the most intensive henna cultivation in India. Up to 90 percent of Rajasthan's commercial henna production is in this area.

Over 100 henna processing units are in operation in Sojat.

Bollywood's hottest couple are getting married on April 20. According to reports, the ceremony would be a low key affair and held in Mumbai with only the closest family and friends in attendance.

Ash-Abhi wedding: The festivities start

The first day of the elaborate three-day wedding saw a lot of excitement at the Bachchan homes, Prateeksha and Jalsa, even as the Rai residence was relatively quiet.

Fans thronged the gates, hoping for a glimpse of their favourite stars, while the security worked twice as hard keeping people at bay.

After a whole day of waiting, we were treated to a Mercedes, which drove up to Jalsa at about 5pm. Aishwarya Rai was rumoured to be in it.

The car stayed behind the gates of Jalsa for a few minutes, and then proceeded towards Prateeksha.

Ash-Abhi wedding: The festivities start

Outside Prateeksha, Aishwarya's long-time secretary Hari Singh was spotted carrying a file under his arm and instructing people.

Singh has been working closely with Ash for years now, and was, in fact, the person who confirmed to rediff.com about Ash's engagement in January.

So will Ash arrive for her wedding in a doli (palanquin)?

Eyebrows were raised, as a silver doli was spotted at the Bachchan residence.

An elaborate chandelier made it way through the gates of Prateeksha.

As a worker commented, 'the wedding decor is grander than the Taj Mahal.'

Ash-Abhi wedding: The festivities start

As fans waited for a glimpse, or even news of the wedding, they were treated to some mouth-watering sweets from Kanpur.

Apparently, a shop in Kanpur called Thagu ke laddoo had been instructed to bring 51 kilos of laddoos on April 25. Since they arrived a couple of days earlier, they were told to distribute the sweets among the media and fans collected outside.

Interestingly, some parts of Abhishek's film Bunty Aur Babli were shot in Thagu ke laddoo in Kanpur.

First Look: Ash practices dance steps

April 18, 2007 18:33 IST

Now, that's how you shake the kajra.

While all is secrecy inside the heavily guarded -- and incredibly media-seiged -- homes of Aishwarya Rai and father-in-law to be Amitabh Bachchan, here's a rare sneak peek.

This photograph shows that the rumours are true, and Aishwarya will indeed be performing -- most likely at the sangeet, a musical event to be held at one of the Big B's Juhu homes, Prateeksha, on Wednesday, April 18.

Taken from afar, here we see Aishwarya at a neighbour's house, practicing dance steps for the big show.

It's going to be some spectacular night, that's for sure.

First Look: Preparations on at Bachchan residence

April 17, 2007 11:08 IST

Behind all the security, scrutiny and spotlight, stars are pretty much like us.

A walk outside Amitabh Bachchan's famed Jalsa Bungalow in Mumbai's Juhu suburb confirms this, the massively guarded home swamped by all sorts of preparations for son Abhishek's nuptials with Aishwarya Rai this Friday.

Going clockwise from top left, we see a Taj Catering van in one frame; the guards -- shot from a distance in order to avoid ruffling megastar feathers -- outside the main gate in another; and truckloads of scaffolding arriving, presumably to shield the tall, flower-lined walls towering over the house.

Bachchan's other Juhu residence, Pratiksha, was also seen buzzing with activity on Tuesday morning. Curious onlookers were found craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the activities inside the then-ajar door of the bungalow.

But alas, all one could see were some workers unloading a matador full of wooden planks, scaffolding and fibre glass. A half-finished toron (decorative gate) stood tall, as if pre-announcing the mega event.

A wedding in a massive Indian family: is there ever a more legitimate time for household chaos?

Police to bill Bachchans for security

April 18, 2007 14:16 IST
Last Updated: April 18, 2007 16:48 IST

The Mumbai police have informed the Bachchans that all security arrangements required for the Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding will come at a cost, for which they would bill the family.

The three-day function, which will see a host of celebrites attending, has already brought suburban Juhu's traffic to a halt and the police is on constant patrol to prevent any untoward incident.

"We met Mr Amitabh Bachchan and told him that he will have to pay for the extra police deployed during the wedding," Senior Inspector Pradeep Shinde of the Juhu police station told rediff.com.

The police is keeping a 24-hour vigil around Bachchan's two Juhu bungalows -- Jalsa and Prateeksha -- where the event will take place. The two houses fall under the jurisdiction of the Juhu police station.

"Many important personalities are coming to the wedding, but still this is a private function and therefore we told Mr Bachchan he would be charged for the event," added Shinde.

The politicians, who are expected to attend, include Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. The guest list also includes a host of businessmen like Anil Ambani and innumberable film stars.

Bachchan has verbally committed to pay the bill after the wedding.

Onlookers and fans of Ash-Abhishek are already doing the rounds to try and get a glimpse of the actors.

Shinde did not reveal how many policemen would be posted at the venue, but said that policemen from all over Mumbai have been deployed to provide security. The police have also kept fire extingushers at bay as a safety precaution to prevent any uncalled disaster.

Caterers and workers at the venue have been issued special passes to enter the Bachchan homes.

The Bachchans have also hired private security guards who are posted at the gates. They have been instructed by the Bachchans that they should not be rude to the media, whatever the case may be.

A television reporter, in her enthusiasm, jumped the barricade and tried to speak one of the workers at Prateeksha. But the guard intervened politely.

The traffic police are also getting ready for the traffic scene over the next two days. The traffic has been moving slow since morning, as fans have already gathered at the venue.

"Our department is coordinating with the traffic police. We are confident that this event will pass off peacefully," added Shinde.

The buzz outside Ash's house

Preparations at Ash''s home

Last Updated: April 18, 2007 18:04 IST

No media is allowed beyond the gates of Bandra's posh Lamar Apartments, where Aishwarya Rai resides. Here's what's likely to happen if you try your luck there.

Anyone trying to get close to the main gate are warned by the mediapeople themselves that the little bit that they can get to cover would also be deprived from them. So its also bad for the journalists toiling since morning.

We had to wait hours to get a glimpse of what was going inside the building -- the only time we got a chance to look inside, we saw a pandal has been erected inside the apartment premises, with a green cloth roof and blue flooring, with blue lanterns.

2 policemen stand guard at the gate 24/7, and security firm Monitron has also been deployed to cover the building. At Amitabh Bachchan's homes Jalsa and Prateeksha, crowds of eager fans are standing outside the building, but at Lamar all you can see are a few mediapeople.

Two children were the only enthusiasts who came to check if any stars were coming to meet Ash. Apparently, these kids were told that Abhishek had visited her at around 6:30 pm on Tuesday evening, and they came to see if they could get to see some superstars.

Neeta Lulla, longtime dress designer for Aishwarya, is planning Aishwarya's trousseau and had come to visit her with the costumes Aishwarya will be wearing today and tomorrow.

oday, the sangeet will be at Prateeksha at around 7:30 pm, and there are rumors that the mehndi will be at Aishwarya's residence tomorrow. So therefore the pandals have been erected with 260 chairs and a good amount of tables inside the Lamar building. Huge mattresses were also taken in and out of the building.

The assembled media speculate that today's Prateeksha sangeet will include Hrithik Roshan dancing to a song from Dhoom 2 and Ash-Abhi dangin to Kajra Re. There may also be some bhangra at the sangeet as a few people dressed in typical Punjabi costumes were seen entering Prateeksha.

Bollywood hopefuls throng outside Ash's home

Munshi Khan Pathan

April 20, 2007 14:53 IST
Last Updated: April 20, 2007 15:24 IST

Two Khans are all set to gatecrash the Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding today. And no, we're not talking about Shah Rukh and Salman.

Munshi Khan Pathan and brother-in-law Amin Khan had tried to bless the bride on Thursday night but were stopped by the security personnel. But the duo are undeterred.

"I am all set to barge in and bless her. They didn't let me inside tonight. But they can't stop me at the wedding," says Munshi who hails from Gomatipur, Ahmedabad.

Munshi is not a stranger to movies. He owns a Gujarati film production company called Munshi Film Enterprise, based at Gomtipur. Amin Khan is his business partner based in Rajasthan.

Munshi also carries with him a business card, a photograph and two posters of his film Matabhare, which he claims was the biggest hit his company has produced.

"It is the Gujarati remake of Sunny Deol's Ghayal," he claims.

He says Aishwarya is not a stranger to him, as they had worked together in her Hindi film debut Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya.

"I was part of the crowd in the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hain in the movie," he says proudly.

Munshi's tryst with filmdom started with the movie Naukar Biwi Ka (1983) after which he has been a regular in crowd sequences in close to 100 movies.

"If you look carefully, you can spot me in some sequences in Guru too," he winks.

It was his obsession with movies that made him start Munshi Film Enterprise. "Matabhare was a medium budget movie where I starred as a cop," says this 45-year old who is yet to tie the knot himself.

"If I meet my dream woman, I will marry her then and there itself. I guess I still have time!" he exclaims.

Though Munshi did not get to meet Ash, he managed to grab the attention of some Bollywood strugglers, who had gathered outside Ash's residence hoping to gain entry into showbiz through some producer or star who 'might' bump into them at the wedding.

Well, they got one and very soon, Munshi was inundated with mobile numbers.

"I can write beautiful songs. I hope Munshiji gives me a break," says a hopeful from Jharkhand.
