Chelsea vs Arsenal Player Ratings

Chelsea

Petr Cech - 7

Looked in imperious form. Came forward with confidence to collect the ball from corners and showed good awareness to distribute the ball quickly to catch Arsenal on the counter. Saved a stinging free-kick from Cesc Fabregas to prevent Chelsea from enduring a nervous last few minutes.

John Terry - 7.5

Looked like the recent controversy had barely affected him. Was immense in defence despite picking up a niggle in the second half and set up Chelsea's first goal with a fine header.

Ricardo Carvalho - 7

Partnered well with Terry to cut out any minute holes in defence that Arsenal tend to pick so easily. Arshavin never got past him. Showed surprising pace to tear through a weak opposition defence on a couple of occasions.

Ashley Cole - 7

Ran rampant down the left flank, slithering past Bacary Sagna with consummate ease. Read Lampard's long diagonals superbly, causing all kinds of havoc in the Gunners' defence. Arsenal did not get any joy while attacking down his side either.

Branislav Ivanovic - 4

The poorest of the Blues' backline, Ivanovic struggled to contain Samir Nasri. The Frenchman eluded him with ease and bombed the Chelsea box. The Croat was fortunate that in Arshavin, Arsenal had a "striker" who would struggle to outjump a 5 year old on a good day. Ivanovic did not offer a lot going forward either.

John Mikel Obi - 5

One of the few players on the night who went unnoticed. Was quietly effective and did what was expected on him - i.e. not to let the Gunners control the midfield.

Frank Lampard - 6

Was not at his best in front of the box but executed some brilliant long balls to both Cole and Ivanovic. Was instrumental in the second goal by sliding a neat ball to Drogba who did what he does best.

Michael Ballack - 6.5

Was huge in midfield, lording it over the likes of Alex Song and Abou Diaby, disrupting Arsenal's smooth game frequently.

Florent Malouda - 6.5

Held the ball up well in front and allowed Drogba as well as Anelka to move in behind the defence. Pressed the Gunners well, stealing the ball quite frequently. Started spraying the ball late in the game but by then Chelsea had almost tied the game up.

Didier Drogba - 9.5

Arsenal's destroyer in chief, the fearsome Ivorian continued his incredible scoring streak against the Gunners. Any any given time, it took two defenders to keep the him in check. While the first goal was a simple tap in, Drogba showed pace, skill and power to blast in the second, effectively sealing Arsenal's fate.

Nicolas Anelka - 5.5

Was overshadowed by his striking partner on the day and looked to be a peripheral presence for large parts of the game. Sprang into life with some slick movement in the second half and forced the Gunners into hurried clearances.

Substitutes

Yuri Zhirkov - n.a

Joe Cole - n.a

Salomon Kalou - n.a

Arsenal

Manuel Almunia - 5

Had an average game. Was good with his handling, but his distribution was horrific at times.

William Gallas - 7

Had to put in absolutely everything to prevent Drogba from running riot, and did so. Was one of the few who refused to be cowed down by the striker. Was terrific in the air as well, clearing corners and free-kicks with authority. Did not allow any of the Chelsea forwards to skin him.

Thomas Vermaleen - 3.5

Showed occasional sparks of brilliance but had a largely mediocre outing. Poor communication with Clichy allowed Drogba to cut in and shoot for the second goal. Was caught out by Lampard's aerial balls more than once.

Gael Clichy - 4.5

First the good part. His link up play with Nasri was excellent - and most of the Gunner attacks in the first half came down the flanks down which the two plied their wares. However, his defending was poor once again - first standing off Drogba when the striker was approaching the goal and then allowing the striker to cut in with ease to let loose his goalbound strike. Required the help of his  midfielders to control Drogba through most of the match.

Bacary Sagna - 6

Played a starring role in the Arsenal defence - keeping Anelka in check. Ashley Cole did not allow him the usual freedon down the right - which meant that the Gunners were deprived of an important source of crosses.

Alex Song - 4

Got absolutely run over in midfield by Malouda and Ballack in the first half. Was supposed to mark Drogba but completely lost his man in the lead up to the first goal.

Abou Diaby - 5

The rangy midfielder did not have one of his better days. He usually likes to move through the centre but Chelsea's midfield combined very effectively to crowd him out. Showed the limitations of his game by not being able to find a way around them.

Cesc Fabregas - 7

Was suprisingly poor from corners and free-kicks, bar one from just outside the box. But the Spaniard was in good form in open play, pulling the strings as usual. Was instrumental in the pressure that Arsenal maintained on the Blues throughout the second half and would have reaped better results on another day.

Samir Nasri - 8

Arsenal's best player on the pitch. Harrassed Ivanovic almost to the point of distraction and his one-twos were Fabregas were a joy to behold. Came up short in front of goal though, taking too much time to decide whether to shoot or pass.

Theo Walcott - 6.5

Seemed to be in good form after his recent poor run. Switched flanks intelligently - moving from right to left and trying to open up space for himself.

Andrei Arshavin - 3.5

Continued to prove that Wenger's strategy of playing him down the centre as the lone striker is simply not working. Barely provided any aerial threat and tried to do too much on his own with the ball at his feet. Had only one chance of note in the match which Cech did well to save.

Substitutes

Nicklas Bendtner - 6.5

Did not do a whole lot, but his mere presence allowed Arshavin to drop a little deeper and play in the hole between Chelsea's defence and midfield - a role in which the Russian looked far more comfortable and Gunners more threatening.

Tomas Rosicky - n.a

Did not see much of the ball.

Emmanuel Eboue - 6.5

Encapsulated the Gunners' willingness to fight till the very end. Did what Diaby could not by ripping through Chelsea's centre with a few powerful runs. Was responsible for goal mouth scrambles which might have led to a goal.

Report: Fabregas in Barca deal

Cesc Fabregas has agreed a verbal deal for a summer move to the Nou Camp according to a report in Spanish publication Sport.

The Arsenal captain has been the subject of wild speculation since the beginning of this season, with both players and administrators of the Catalan club expressing their desire to bring the Spaniard back to his boyhood club.

The 22-year-old himself has admitted that he would like to one day return to Barcelona and now it seems like this may happen sooner rather than later.

With the Gunners slipping yet again in their pursuit of silverware, the 2005 FA Cup Trophy and the FA Community Shield are the only prizes Fabregas has won at Arsene Wenger's club.

Barcelona, on the other hand, swept all before them last season, winning six trophies in all. They head the La Liga table again this year.

With the midfielder at the height of his powers, it is understandable that he would want to hitch his wagon to a team whose likelihood of winning trophies is high in the near future.

As of now, Barcelona have neither confirmed nor denied the news in Sport, but it would not be a surprise if it turned out to be true.
