Sukhoi, MIG-29N Combination Can Boost Air Defence Power, Says RMAF
PASIR PUTEH, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- Combination of the Sukhoi F/A 18D and MIG-29N Hawk jet fighters will significantly boost the Royal Malaysian Air Forces' defence capabilities and protect the country's air space.
The jet fighters aided by the new, modern and sophisticated radar system would be an added boost to the air defence power, the RMAF said.
It said procurement of the state-of-the-art air weaponry systems capable of launching air and ground attacks right on target was also an added advantage.
With the acquisition of the jet fighters and weaponry systems, the air forces' air defence capabilities to carry out "Day and Night Offensive Counter Air and Defensive Counter Air Operation" had been enhanced, it said.
The RMAF is expected to take delivery of the Russian-made Sukhoi jet fighters in stages from January next year.
The jets would be based at the RMAF base in Gong Kedak, Kelantan, it said in a statement issued in conjunction with the visit by the Sultan of Kelantan Tuanku Ismail Petra Ibni Almarhum Sultan Yahya Petra and members of the Kelantan royalty to the Gong Kedak air base.
It said the air forces' development and excellence were not focused merely on procurement of modern jet fighters and weaponry systems but also upgrading infrastructure and manpower resources -- catalyst to the existing assets' capabilities.
To produce skilled, competent and knowledgeable airmen, the RMAF had implemented the K-Force programme in collaboration with local universities, it said.
The programme gives an opportunity to air force personnel to take various courses at diploma and degree levels.
Meanwhile, the Tengku Temenggung was taken on a 20-minute aerial view on board a F/A 18D jet fighter while the Sultan of Kelantan and other members of the royal family attended a briefing on the Gong Kedak base's development in Bukit Putri, Besut,
The Raja Perempuan Kelantan Tengku Anis Tengku Abdul Hamid, Tengku Mahkota Kelantan, Tengku Temenggung and Tengku Amalin Aishah Putri were in the royal delegation.
Also in the delegation were Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and RMAF chief Jen Tan Sri Nik Ismail Nik Mohamed.

Malaysia's Unmanned Surveillance Aircraft To Roll Out Next Year
By Salmy Hashim
WASHINGTON, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's first unmanned surveillance aircraft is expected to roll out next year to protect the country's waters and airspace from any threats, chief of Defence Forces Admiral Tan Sri Mohamad Anwar Mohamad Nor said here Thursday.
He said several of these aircraft, which could perform 24-hour surveillance, were being manufactured by a consortium of three local companies, Composite Technology Resource Malaysia (CTRM).
"CTRM is now performing trials on this UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle). We plan to buy a few of these vehicles to protect the country from pirates and other non-traditional threats and as part and parcel of our national defence system," he told Bernama in an interview.
Anwar is in the United States for a one-week visit at the invitation of his American counterpart, US Joint Chief of Staff General Peter Pace. He is accompanied by his wife, Puan Sri Siti Hapsah Omar.
He began his tour with a visit to the Nellis air force base in Nevada on Monday where he observed the American UAV, the Predator, in flight and a demonstration of fighter jets. There are at least 10 American UAVs being utilised in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Anwar laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery just outside Washington Thursday morning, attended by Gen Pace, followed by discussions with Pace and Under-Secretary of Defence for Policies, ambassador Eric Edelman.
He said the discussions centred on military-to-military cooperation and collaboration in bilateral exercises, including the future of Special Forces exercises; joint efforts in the war on terror, particularly sharing of information on militant groups and terrorist groups in the region; and how the US could contribute to capacity building and interdiction.
Anwar was invited to address the Class of 2007 on "Advancing Maritime Cooperation: The Malaysian Perspective" at his alma mater, the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. The admiral studied strategy, policy and operation at that college 25 years ago.
The Malaysian entourage was then flown to Fort Benning, Georgia, home of the infantry training centre, to take a closer look at the US approach in training the 21st century soldier -- multi-skilled, highly competent, and ready to be deployed for war.
"We can learn some of these best practices, in particular the transformation process into the 21st century military. Of course, all those best practices will be studied before we adopt them in the Malaysian military," he said.

Pesawat UAV Malaysia Dikeluarkan Tahun Depan, Kata Anwar
Anwar kemudian menyempurnakan istiadat meletak kalungan bunga di Tanah Perkuburan Negara Arlington (Tomb of the Unknown), dekat sini pada pagi Khamis.

Malaysia May Buy Brahmos Missile From India
October 05, 2006 16:22 PM
NEW DELHI, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia may buy the Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from India.
India's Defence Secretary, Shekhar Dutt, who visited Malaysia last month, pushed ahead discussions that could make the country the first foreign buyer of the missile, the English daily, the Indian Express, reported.
The visit, says the report, was the "first concerted push to develop the region as a market for New Delhi's new missile export policy".

Malaysia may be first BrahMos buyer
ShivarrorPosted online: Sunday, October 08, 2006 at 0000 hrs
New Delhi, October 7:In the first phase of the UPA government's newly-liberalised policy on missile export to ?riendly countries? in the region, Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt made a quiet visit to Kuala Lumpur late last month for talks that could shortly make Malaysia the first foreign buyer of the Indo-Russian PJ-10 BrahMos cruise missile.
After PM Manmohan Singh? affirmation in May on the ?onsiderable export potential? of the BrahMos, South Block? near-term game plan on missile diplomacy is to pitch the 290-km range BrahMos to Malaysia and other countries that flank the strategically crucial Strait of Malacca ? Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia ? as a counter to Beijing? inspired push of its Ying-Ji family of anti-ship missiles. New Delhi's sales pitch: the BrahMos is cheaper, up to three times faster and, more privately, comes from a country with a spotless non-proliferation record.
The Royal Malaysian Navy, which has traditionally deployed European anti-ship missiles like the Exocet MM40, first expressed its keenness on the BrahMos when Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash visited Kuala Lumpur in June 2005. Three months ago, deputy PM Mohammed Najib Tun Haj Abdul Razak reaffirmed the country? interest.

Pegawai Pemerintah Batalion 11, Regimen Askar Melayu Diraja (RAMD) Kem Semenggoh Kuching, Left Abdullah Mustafa, berkata operasi pada Ramadan berjalan seperti biasa tanpa sebarang masalah.
Turut hadir, Komandan Batalion Yonif 621, Manuntung, Kalimantan Selatan, Left-Kol Wim Mulyadi Purba.
