The Classy of Jalan U-Thant -

The classy Jalan U-Thant plays host to various foreign embassies

Down Memory Lane: Jalan U-Thant, KL

The man behind the road: U-Thant
worked in various departments of the
Burmese government before taking on
the post of secretarygeneral of the UN

The quaint road that is home to various foreign embassies is aptly named after the man who had spent years in international relations as the secretary-general of the United Nations.

Just a stone throw away from Jalan Ampang, Jalan U-Thant plays host to buildings like the Iranian embassy, the Iraqi embassy as well as various luxury residential properties.

U Thant was born in Pantanaw, Burma on January 22 1909 and was educated at the National High School in Pantanaw. He went on to pursue his tertiary qualifications in University College, Rangoon.

He then ventured into educational, research and information work and started off as a senior master of his alma mater, and in 1931, he took on the post of headmaster after securing first place in the Anglo-Vernacular Secondary Teachers Examination.

He was also a member of the Burma抯 Textbook Committee and of the Council of National Education before the Second World War broke out. He also assumed the position of executive committee member of the Heads of Schools Association and was a freelance journalist.

Quaint and quiet: Jalan U-Thant is like a hideaway from the city抯
hustle and bustle.

In 1942, U-Thant served as the secretary of Burma抯 Education Reorganization Committee for several months before returning to his post as headmaster of the National High School for another four years. In 1947, he was appointed press director of the Burmese government and a year later, he became the director of broadcasting. He then took on the post of secretary at the Ministry of Information and in 1953, he was made the secretary at the Prime Minister抯 Office and two years later, he was assigned additional duties as executive secretary to Burma抯 Economic and Social Board.

His experience in various fields of civil service made him the perfect candidate as the permanent representative of Burma to the United Nations, which he took on with the rank of ambassador from 1957 to 1961. It was during this time when he was appointed as acting secretary-general of the United Nations.

Elite: Luxury residential properties are some of the buildings
that dot Jalan U-Thant.

He played important roles of heading Burmese delegations of the UN general assembly sessions and in 1959, he was one of the vice-presidents of the assembly抯 fourteenth session. In 1961, U-Thant was also the chairman of the UN Congo Conciliation Commission and chairman of the committee on UN Capital Development Fund. He also played the role of advisor to the prime ministers of Burma on several occasions.

Upon the recommendation of the Security Council, he was unanimously appointed Secretary General by the general assembly on Nov 30 1962 for a term of office ending Nov 3 1966. He was reappointed on Dec 2 1966 for another term ending Dec 31 1971.

U-Thant retired at the end of his second term and he died on 25 November 1974 after a long illness. He was 65 years old.

PASAR SENI (CENTRAL MARKET)

kita selalu dengar tentang pasar seni or
ringkasnya orang KL kata CM -
kalau nak jumpa kawan  - rendezvous yang mudah : CM

now let's see what is it actually --

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pasar Seni simpan sejarah ibu kota

Tempat Famous - Jalan Masjid India -

lets share some few stuff re:  JMI  ni --

Century-old area famed for its wares

MASJID INDIA, a thriving, bustling area known as Kuala Lumpur's Little India, is almost synonymous with textiles, jewellery and food outlet.

It is regarded by some as a shopping heaven and, according to the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KLSICCI), is home to one of the highest valued properties in Kuala Lumpur.

Over the years, many businesses have become hallmarks of the area, choosing to stay because of the location and the crowds that throng there every day.

Cosy: The interior of the Federal Bakery gives visitors a nostalgic feel.

This year, Federal Bakery celebrates its 101st year in business and it was one of the first bakeries to be set up in the area and still stands tall.

Mohammed Ibrahim, 65, has been with the bakery since 1954, when he started as a baker.

I am a cashier now but back then I was baking cakes. People come here because of the taste.

揥e get a mix of people but most are regular customers. 揑t is an honour to still be in the Masjid India area.

Mall with all the right attributes

Stories by BAVANI M.
Photos by SAMUEL ONG

THIS year, Kuala Lumpur抯 most enduring shopping complex turns 30. Since it opened its doors in 1977, Sungei Wang Plaza has become the centre for urban culture, catering to the needs of the young, the young at heart and the traveller. The mall has become a landmark of sorts and attracts over two million visitors each month. StarMetro speaks to its loyal tenants, staff members and shoppers to find out what makes the complex so popular.

WHAT makes one of the city抯 most enduring malls so popular? Some say it抯 the location? Some believe its good feng shui is the reason while others are lured by the variety of goods that can be found under its roof.

Whatever the reasons, Sungei Wang Plaza has managed to survive two recessions, floods and even several gang wars. It has come out unscathed and even won the prestigious FIABCI Prix d Excellence 1996 international award under the Retail Properties category
