PETR CECH is set for a remarkable return to action tomorrow - just eight days after Chelsea feared the keeper抯 season was over.
Cech needed 50 stitches and reconstructive plastic surgery after his face was sliced in two in an accidental training ground clash with Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim.
Chelsea medics initially feared the worst, likening the horrifying injury to the sort of laceration that would keep a boxer out of the ring for six months.
But as the club considered moulding a special lower face mask to protect the injury, Cech made an amazing training ground return last Thursday.
And Mirror.co.uk can reveal he has been penciled in to replace hamstring victim Carlo Cudicini and start in tomorrow night抯 home game with Wigan.
Manager Avram Grant, in consultation with Cech and the club doctors, will make a final decision after today抯 training session at Cobham.
But unless there is a setback of Cech expresses concern about his readiness to play, he will return to the starting line-up for the first time since an ankle injury on March 5.

aku rs bleh save cech utk everton n fools nex week .. stakat wigan .. bolos 1, kite score 14 gol ,xdehal .. |

CECH IS BACK !!!
Just a week after he suffered a facial injury that required 50stitches, Petr Cech could be in contention to appear against Wigantonight, so says Avram Grant.
Cech, who missed four months of last season with a fractured skull, has not appeared for us since March 1, due to an ankle injury and thenlast week's training ground accident.
Having observed the giant goalkeeper in light training this week, Grant refused to rule Cech out of tonight's game.
'I don't know, I said he is improving, we have tested a mask forhim,' Grant explained. 'We need to go again with him, and in a way heis training. In one training he wore a mask, one he was without. We arechecking all the possibilities with him.
'I cannot tell you now but we need to speak with the medicaldepartment and see how he is feeling, the chances are not so good. Ithink for the moment it is a risk, but I am not a doctor.'
Grant has also conceded that number two goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini islikely to be out for around four weeks, which means Hilario, whoreplaced the Italian against Fenerbah鏴 last week, is in line to playtonight should Cech not make it.
So far this season, Cech has made 32 appearances, compared to Cudicini's 17 (one as sub) and Hilario's six (two sub).

Chelsea are looking to extend our record unbeaten league run at Stamford Bridge to 80 games since our last defeat against Arsenal on February 21st 2004.
If we avoid defeat against Wigan, it will be our 100th consecutive unbeaten domestic match at Stamford Bridge (if penalty shoot-outs are excluded).
We are looking to extend our club unbeaten record at Stamford Bridge in all competitions to 65 games since our last defeat on February 22nd 2006 when Barcelona beat a ten-man Chelsea 2-1 in the Champions League. That has been our only home defeat in the last 123 games since February 2004.
Chelsea are on the longest current unbeaten run in the Premier League of 16 matches since the defeat at the Emirates in December.
It is the fourth occasion Hil醨io has had to come into the side when both Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini have been injured at the same time. Since joining in the summer of 2006 he has played 24 games, kept 11 clean sheets and only been on the losing side once, at Tottenham last season with a 10-man Chelsea following John Terry's red card. He has won 17 and drawn six of the rest. He has a 100 per cent winning record in this season's six appearances.
Wigan's home record has lifted them clear of the bottom three with four wins and a draw in the last five games but away from the JJB they have only won one point from the last possible 15.
Only Derby have scored less than Wigan's 10 away goals (17 games). |
