The first day of the main draw of the Yonex Korea Open was filled with surprises, long matches, and controversies. A lot of excitement for the most lucrative tournament in the world which kicked off on Tuesday in Seoul.
What a day! 14 hours of intense matches - most going to three games - some upsets, while other top players were going through quite easily, there were some withdrawals giving the chance to new players to enter the most lucrative of all Super Series, the US$300,000 Yonex Korea Open.
But the real heroes of the day were the umpires and referees, who probably never felt so much pressure for a first round day. While some controversiol calls were made by the local line judges, the umpires had then a tough choice: overrule some of them, then having to deal with the frustration of foreign players and coaches, when they didn抰, and local coaches when they did.
Some matches saw the Referee come on court three times, like the one between Korea抯 Lee Young Dae-Lee Hyo Jung and World Champions Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir. On two occasions, the BWF Certificated Umpire Gilles Cavert overruled a call, and on two occasions, saw Lee Dong Soo, Korea抯 coach, jumped off his seat and kicked the side box where players put their bags in.
A lot of pressure for the French Umpire, whose name was on the list of Umpires called for the Olympic Games released the very same day |
